Chapter 214: Heavy Footsteps
Jack hated Aimée, but he had to show the Rolland family some respect.
He hurried to the children’s room and whispered, “Alison, I’m out to deal with something. You sleep first.”
“Go ahead. I’m also going out. No need to rush back,” Alison said.
Jack nodded. “Okay, keep your phone on. If I don’t call back, I’ll call you.”
He drove to the hospital, deciding to settle things once and for all.
After getting to the hospital, he hurried toward the emergency room.
As he turned a corner, his mother and Aimée’s mother’s voices echoed.
He stopped in his tracks, eavesdropping at the corner.
“Sylvia, stop crying. Aimée will be fine.”
“Isabella, can’t Aimée and Jack be together anymore?”
“Sorry, Sylvia. My son is too stubborn. I even cut myself for Aimée’s sake, but it didn’t work.”
“I’m so sorry for asking you to do that.”
“It’s okay, we are all for Aimée and her kid. But now, she…”
Jack’s face flushed with anger as he heard the truth. He lunged forward and grabbed his mother’s hand. “Mom, let’s go home.”
Sylvia froze, then looked at him guiltily. “Jack, you’re here.”
“Yes,” he replied. Then he turned to Isabella. “Mom, let’s leave here.”
Isabella shook off his hand. “No, Jack, come to visit Aimée first.”
“No.”
Aimée’s mother turned ashen. “Jack, you bastard. Aimée loved you so much, but now you don’t even visit her!”
“Sylvia, thank you for saving my mother back then. But if you dare to ask my mother to suffer, I will kill you,” Jack said coldly.
“Stop, Jack. Back then, if it weren’t for Sylvia, you might have died in the womb.”
“So what? I know we owe the Rollands a great deal, but what about my lifelong happiness? Do you want to kill it?”
His words hit Isabella. She lost in thought. Happiness?
Seeing her resolve waver, Jack added, “If I marry Aimée, we both will suffer.”
“Jack, but the child…” his mother said worriedly.
“Mom, having the child or not is up to her. But a single-parent child won’t be happy.” Jack blurted out.
At that moment, Sylvia let out a cry, her body swaying before collapsing to the floor.
Isabella quickly grabbed her. “Sylvia, hold on!”
Jack called a nurse and had Aimée’s mother brought into the ward, where Isabella could care for her.
Meanwhile, he went outside the emergency room to wait for Aimée.
“Family member?” someone asked.
“Yes,” Jack answered.
“Then prepare to receive the bed.”
“How is she?” Jack asked.
“Rest assured. She’s out of danger. The fetus is also stable. Don’t upset her to cut herself again.”
Jack nodded. “Understood.”
Soon, Aimée was out. Perhaps due to the anesthesia and sedatives, she slept peacefully with an IV tube.
He sighed inwardly. Why always cling to me?
By the time Aimée was wheeled into the ward, Sylvia was crying out to see her.
Jack frowned, saying, “Mom, I’ll hire a caregiver for you. Please stay and look after them.”
“What about you? Jack,” Isabella asked.
