Chapter 178: Is She Lying Again?
The children were Alison’s bottom line.
As for Aidan, she truly didn’t want to keep hiding things from him. He had always been sincere with her, yet her heart had no room for him. When the time was right, she would tell Aidan the truth – she had loved Jack for four years.
…
Aimée and Jack’s wedding was just two days away.
Alison received the bridesmaid dress Aimée had sent over.
“Mummy, this dress is so pretty! You’ll look amazing in it,” said Sophia excitedly, picturing Alison wearing it.
“Yes, I’ll wear it in two days.”
“Will you wear it for Daddy to see?” Sophia asked, her eyes sparkling.
The words struck Alison like a bolt. “Yes.”
“Daddy will love it. Mummy, when I grow up, I want to wear pretty dresses like that too.”
Alison stroked her head. “Yes, when you grow up, Mummy will buy you the most beautiful clothes.”
She would give her children everything she had, but the love of a father remained out of reach.
She saw no future with Jack. Isabella was like a wall between them.
Time passed quickly, and the wedding of Aimée and Jack was approaching.
Alison picked up her phone and called Aidan.
A pang of unease washed over her. Though reluctant, she had no choice but to persuade Aidan to attend the wedding.
“Alison? Is that you?” Aidan’s delighted voice came through the line.
“Yes, it’s me,” she replied, her heart heavy with regret.
“Alison, I want to see you.”
“Well, I actually have something to discuss with you, too.”
“Great! Now! I can’t wait to see you.”
She smiled. “Aidan, you pick the time and place.”
“Will you really come and see me?” His voice brimmed with surprise.
“Of course.”
“You…” Aidan almost blurted out Jack’s name, but stopped himself. It was better to play dumb. After all, Jack was about to marry Aimée.
“Aidan, what’s wrong?” His pause made Alison’s heart skip a beat.
Did he already know something?
“Oh, nothing much. I just really want to see you. Where are you staying now? I’ll come and pick you up.”
“No need. It’s pretty out of the way here and hard to find.”
“Then you can come over. By the way, how are the kids doing?”
“They’re doing great.”
“Bring them over! I’d love to meet them. They’re so adorable.” Aidan already knew they were Jack’s children.
He wondered when he might have children of his own.
His thoughts drifted to the baby growing inside Aimée. He wanted to share this secret, but he didn’t dare.
“All right, see you in half an hour.”
“Alright.” Aidan hung up and prepared himself.
“Sophia, Ethan, hurry up and get dressed. Mummy’s taking you out to play.”
“Where are we going?” the children asked.
“To meet your godfather.”
“Winston?” Ethan pouted, thinking to himself— Why can’t it be Daddy?
“Yes, Godfather misses you.” Alison thought it would be better to bring the children along to meet Aidan.
“Doesn’t Daddy miss us?” Ethan was reluctant, hoping to see his father.
“He does. He’ll have time in a few days. Mummy will make sure he spends every day with you then.” She was convinced it would happen – she wouldn’t let Aimée win.
Ethan pouted, “Mummy, if you find Daddy, tell him I never want to see him.”
“Ethan, what’s wrong? Are you angry with Daddy?”
“No.” Ethan turned his head away.
“Mummy told you that Daddy is busy. You need to understand. When you see him again, he’ll make it up to you.”
“Mummy, are you lying?”
Alison had said this countless times before, yet more than half a month had passed, and the kids still didn’t see Jack.
