Chapter 163: Closer to Him
Alison said, “Jack, I don’t need anything from you. Just spend time with me occasionally. Aimée is carrying your baby; you need to take good care of her.”
Deep down, she didn’t truly hate anyone. She was simply soft-hearted, always wishing the people around her could be happy.
“Honey, you are so kind. I really hope you could be more selfish,” he said, shaking his head helplessly.
“Jack, have you found anything about that year?” She desperately wanted to know the truth.
He sighed and shook his head. “I searched for a long time but found nothing. There might be some big shot inside YD helping that villain. Otherwise Emily could never have stolen the will and recorded that audio. Huh, Alison, just because you spent three months with me, and we had that brief connection, everyone thought I was the one who ordered you to do it.”
She had pieced it all together only later.
Summoning her courage, she said, “Jack, it might have been… your family.” Her heart pounded after speaking, afraid he’d be angry. She knew how much he valued family ties.
He shook his head firmly. “Not Aidan. He hasn’t been to S City in ages. And he’s never been interested in YD.”
Just then, his phone rang.
“Jack, answer it. You can’t keep ignoring your mom’s calls.”
He casually answered the call, only to find it was Aidan.
“Jack, did you drink too much? Should I come pick you up?” Jack joked.
“Jack, Isabella’s in the hospital,” Aidan said urgently.
Nearby, Alison heard everything. Uncertain if Isabella’s hospitalization had anything to do with her, her mind fell into turmoil.
Suddenly, she desperately wanted to tell him about the photos. Though it was difficult for her to bring up, perhaps revealing it could help them uncover the mastermind.
Alison spoke up before Jack rushed off, “Jack, I have…”
“Alison, there’s no time. We’ll talk when I get back. My mother’s been hospitalized. I have to go now.” Jack hurried and headed for the door.
She had to swallow back the words.
Barefoot, she chased to his door. “Jack, take good care of your mother. Don’t worry me.”
Jack smiled. “Alison, it’s okay. It’s just an old ailment. She’ll be fine in a few days.”
Knowing he was trying to reassure her, she nodded gently. “Jack, remember to pick up some fruit before you head to the hospital.”
“Yeah, I will.”
He left in a flurry.
She closed the door and immediately ran to the window, watching him exit the building, start his car, and gradually fade from view.
The unease crept back.
God bless, let everything be okay, she prayed in her heart.
Otherwise, she truly didn’t know what she would do.
She sat down on the bed and suddenly felt something hard beneath her — it was a key. She gave a wry smile. He had left the key after all, but she had no idea which door it opened, nor did she intend to move into his house.
Alison’s life gradually returned to normal.
She continued going to Rebel as usual, and her interactions with Liam grew more frequent.
However, Colton had never reappeared.
She had to figure it out slowly. Otherwise, it might backfire, driving Liam and the manager into a corner.
Back home, she cooked dinner for the kids.
“Mommy, your cooking is so delicious!” Sophia exclaimed.
“Enjoy more if you like it,” she smiled, ruffling Sophia’s hair.
“Mommy, why hasn’t Daddy come these days?” Sophia missed him.
“Daddy had urgent matters to attend to, so he couldn’t come these past few days.” She reassured the kids, though she herself felt abandoned — Jack hadn’t even called her once.
She knew Isabella disliked her. Sometimes she even imagined Isabella might find her, like in the movies or books — inviting her to a café, handing her a check, and asking her to leave Jack. But Isabella never came.
