Chapter 57
Recently, things between Susan and John should be quite interesting.
In my past life, Susan and John got together by stepping over my dead body. In this life, I wouldn't give them any chance. Let's see if they could maintain their already crumbling relationship on their own!
"Nancy, I've been waiting outside for you. Do you know how much I miss you?" John was as fake as always. The phony emotion in his eyes made me sick.
Too bad he didn't see it that way.
"Nancy." Seeing me get straight into the car, he tried to block it.
I smiled at him. "John, if you keep standing there, I'll just run you over. Killing you would be perfect revenge."
My foot moved, the car engine roared, and John stared at me with a terrible expression.
Finally, seeming to realize I would actually hit him with the car, he moved aside!
After getting home, Michael called to ask if I got back safely. Of course, I said yes.
Michael sighed and said, "I wanted to come home to be with you, but I really can't get away. Nancy, I really miss you."
After hanging up, I planned to read a bit. Then Michael sent me several videos on WhatsApp. When I opened them, I couldn't help laughing.
He actually sent me videos from his private room, with everyone enthusiastically greeting me through the camera.
I quickly messaged back: [What are you doing! This is so embarrassing!]
Michael immediately replied: [Checking in with my fiancée, not embarrassing!]
I clicked my tongue. John never did this before. Michael really was the perfect fiancé.
Lying in bed, my mind wandered until I fell asleep. Michael came back and slept in the next room.
The next morning, when I woke up, Michael was already having breakfast downstairs.
I rubbed my eyes and walked over, sitting next to him. "Why didn't you wake me? It's so late."
Michael's parents and we didn't wake up at the same time, so we didn't usually run into each other.
Michael put breakfast in front of me before continuing, "You were sleeping so soundly, I didn't want to disturb you."
Just waking up, I didn't have much appetite. I ate a little and went to work with Michael.
Probably because I didn't eat well in the morning, I got hungry before noon.
Michael: [Come to my office, I have food.]
Michael's message came just as I grabbed a document to deliver to him. Walking into the office, I saw that Michael's attention was on an assistant reporting about a partnership project.
I stood obediently to the side, holding the document, looking at my toes, feeling my stomach growling.
I was really hungry!
My brain was forced to absorb what Michael and the assistant were saying about the partnership project.
This project sounded familiar, like I'd heard about it somewhere before.
My head tilted slightly. As the assistant left, I suddenly remembered. No wonder it sounded familiar - this project failed spectacularly in my past life. The Johnson Group had launched this project back then, too.
Since I didn't get along with the Johnson Group, I was actually happy about it for a while.
Michael waved at me. I walked over and sat on his lap.
Michael gently pinched my nose.
I made a little sound and picked up the partnership proposal on the desk. "What project is this? Are you planning to do it?"
Michael seemed to have nothing to hide from me and nodded directly. "Yes, the company spent a lot of effort investigating this. It should bring good returns."
I frowned. Though I didn't say anything, I was already thinking about how to properly bring this up so Michael would give it up.
I thought of many things, but the Johnson Group wasn't my family's company - they had their own system for selecting projects. If I brought it up directly, nobody would believe me. They might even think I was causing trouble.
For a moment, I felt lost.
Michael seemed to be watching me the whole time. He immediately noticed something was wrong, pulled me into his arms, kissed my forehead, then asked directly, "Nancy, what's wrong?"
I pouted. "It's just that project you and your assistant were talking about. Something feels off to me. I've always had strong instincts since I was little. Maybe you should investigate it more? Otherwise, I won't be able to sleep tonight."
I looked all worried, making Michael laugh heartily. "Got it, you're worried about me. But this project has already been investigated. You should trust the Johnson Group's professional ability."
I sighed.
Seeing I couldn't let it go, Michael finally said, "I'll have my assistant investigate again!"
"Okay." I hugged Michael's neck and gave him a big kiss.
"I knew you loved me most!"
As soon as I said this, Michael was clearly energized. Feeling the movement beneath me, I jumped off Michael's lap.
"I'm leaving!" I said, grabbing the snacks on Michael's desk and running off.
Behind me was Michael's helpless voice.
A few days later, John had no chance to find me again. Or rather, with everything between him and Susan now, he probably had his hands full.
Instead, Susan called me again, saying she wanted to see me.
Even through the phone, I could clearly sense her urgency.
I agreed to meet Susan after work.
When we met, although I knew Susan's life hadn't been easy lately, I was still shocked when I saw her.
John's face had scratch marks, and Susan's face had a big handprint, clearly from a heavy slap.
Susan felt embarrassed under my gaze and lowered her head. "Nancy, I accidentally fell."
I almost laughed. Who accidentally fell and got a handprint? This was ridiculous.
"It's okay, I understand!" I said, pretending to be calm.
Susan drank several sips of coffee without saying anything. Seeing her like this, I took the initiative. "Susan, did you need something from me?"
This opened Susan up. "It's like this - remember that project? The one where I missed the funding application, so the money hasn't come through yet? But this time they gave an even better proposal. I want to invest a bit more, but I really don't have money. Nancy, do you have any? Lend me some, and I'll pay you back as soon as the money comes through."
I sighed deeply. "Susan, if I had money, I'd definitely lend it to you. But Michael doesn't give me much money either. I only have my monthly salary, which isn't much."
I hesitated, and as Susan frowned, I quickly added, "But I have another way to help you!"
