Chapter 52 What Is Your Relationship
Chapter 52 What Is Your Relationship
Calanthe's face turned a sickly shade. She shot Lila a venomous glare before dragging Emily away from the crowd.
The socialites didn't know Lila and didn't want to force a connection.
Seeing there was no drama to watch, they dispersed quickly.
Lila felt much better; finally quiet.
She had no desire to make small talk. She returned to her corner, pulled out her phone, and discreetly accessed the dark web's internal database.
She typed in names, looking at detailed profiles and histories of notable figures.
The elite had comprehensive information stored there.
When she entered Calanthe's name, a line of data popped up: adopted daughter of the Kynance family.
Lila was somewhat shocked.
This self-proclaimed socialite and internet celebrity, who often flaunted her wealth and background online, turned out to be living a fantasy.
She was merely an adopted daughter of a wealthy family, no different from being adopted from an orphanage.
Her luck was slightly better; she wasn't sold off repeatedly.
Lila, on the other hand, was less fortunate, abandoned and left to fend for herself, eventually becoming a top-tier assassin.
Putting down her phone, Lila scanned the room but didn't see Killian.
Feeling a bit tired, she decided to head to the restroom.
"Excuse me, coming through."
At the restroom door, she ran into Calanthe again.
Calanthe blocked her path, looking arrogant and annoying.
Lila's lips curled into a contemptuous smile.
Calanthe thought she could block her way?
Lila could handle it effortlessly with just a snap. Lila didn't talk to her anymore..
She stepped forward, intending to push past Calanthe.
Calanthe didn't budge; instead, she took two steps forward.
"I'm not moving. Do you dare to lay a hand on me?"
It was the first time Lila had been provoked by a woman. She found it quite amusing.
Calanthe should be an actress; her performance was Oscar-worthy.
The gentle and sweet demeanor from earlier was long gone.
If she had been a damsel in distress before, now Calanthe was a wolf showing her true colors.
"You know Phelan, don't you? What's your relationship with him? Why does he always protect you?"
Lila exhaled deeply.
Finally, they were getting to the point.
It seemed Calanthe was relentless because of Phelan.
Lila had nothing to say.
She and Phelan had trained together for five years, knew each other inside out, and had survived countless hellish situations.
They were comrades and rivals.
How could she harbor any illusions about Phelan?
"My relationship with him is none of your business. Did Phelan send you to find me?"
As soon as she said this, Calanthe was even more convinced that Phelan had been captured by Lila.
Lila hadn't wanted to cause trouble, but thinking about the unborn child in her belly, she felt she couldn't let any woman have a chance.
She was pregnant but hadn't dared to tell anyone.
Wearing this outfit in public was already a struggle. Her ten-centimeter heels pinched her ankles painfully, and her tight dress squeezed her belly, forcing her to constantly hold her breath.
Lila wanted to leave, and no one could stop her.
Her hands accidentally touched Calanthe's abdomen, and in that moment, Lila seemed to discover a shocking secret.
She felt a gentle movement beneath her palm, a telltale sign that sent a wave of realization through her. It seemed Calanthe had a hidden agenda. Originally, she wanted to make Calanthe fall flat on her face, but after discovering this secret, she could only pull Calanthe aside, ensuring she landed safely before quickly leaving.
Back at the party, Lila still didn't see Phelan, which she found odd.
But the surrounding chatter inconveniently reached her ears.
A group of gossiping women was discussing, and although Lila usually had no interest in such things, hearing Ava and Killian's names made her perk up.
Apparently, Ava was Killian's first love, rumored to have saved his life when they were kids.
As for Emily, she was just a brainless fangirl.
Emily was notoriously spoiled and capricious in their circle, always bossing people around using the Cavendish and Hart family connections.
Her reputation was terrible.
The only ones willing to hang out with her were those from less privileged backgrounds or her sycophants, including Calanthe.
Since Killian had fired her, the Cavendish family had pleaded with Kai several times, hoping to marry Emily into the Hart family quickly to avoid any complications.
Lila smirked at the gossip.
She hadn't expected the Cavendish, Kynance, and Voss families to all treat Killian like a prized catch.
She lost interest in the rest of the conversation.
Whoever married Killian didn't matter to her because he was destined to be a dead man.
Outside the venue, there was a large terrace.
Feeling bored, Lila walked over.
The cool breeze, the night as calm as water, and the colorful neon lights made the terrace as bright as day.
Phelan had just gotten rid of some clingy women and walked onto the terrace, cigarette in hand, spotting the graceful figure by the railing.
Lila was dressed low-key today, in a green cocktail dress that accentuated her powerful, long legs.
"Didn't expect you to be in such a good mood."
Lila didn't need to turn around to recognize the voice.
"Just tell me what you need. When can I finish this damn mission?"
Phelan laughed, his smile captivating.
Lila looked at his fox-like eyes, feeling annoyed.
"Why the rush? This is just the beginning. Since you missed last time, you should be prepared for a long game."
Thinking about the secret she had just discovered and seeing Phelan's obliviousness, Lila felt sorry for the unborn child.
Not being wanted in this world was the saddest fate.
Lila knew that with Phelan's personality, he wouldn't keep the child if he found out.
So, Lila decided to help that pitiful yet hateful Calanthe.
Make Phelan an unwitting father.
She could already imagine Phelan's reaction, and it was truly satisfying.
Lila felt a dark pleasure; this game was getting interesting.
Phelan, unaware of Lila's thoughts, looked at her with displeasure.
He had protected her for so long; why should Killian get ahead?
As Phelan stepped closer, Lila had to keep retreating.
"Are you looking for death? You know my skills. If you're tired of living, I'd be happy to send you off."
Hearing Lila's words, Phelan didn't doubt her capability one bit.
