Chapter 41

I woke up to the sound of beeping laying in something soft. My eyes opened and I instantly started panicking. The monitors were going crazy at this moment and a herd of people came rushing in.

“Hey it’s okay, you’re okay!” One of the nurses spoke up.

“Where am I?” I asked.

“You’re in Sauder Pack in the hospital.”

“What’s your name?” she asked me.

“R—” I started to speak but I couldn’t give them my real name.

“Kyla, my name is Kyla.” She smiled at me, and it was such a comforting look. The atmosphere was full of positive energy, and it made me feel comfortable.

“Our Beta will be coming to visit you later to speak with you about what happened, Kyla. I will have someone bring you some food but not so much since you are malnourished.”

She squeezed my hand and proceeded to leave. I took in my surroundings and thought back to everything that happened. Through my months of captivity and how I got here. Jax was on my mind hoping that he was happy, and he moved on. I’m sure he did because he basically told me he didn’t want to be with me, and I don’t hate him for it. How could I? I did it to myself. Maybe making this area my new pack was the best thing. The wolf told me they killed the humans but who’s to say there aren’t others that will be after me. I didn’t touch much of my food even though I was starving. Sleep took over and I woke up to find a man looking at me. He had a warm smile as well. There was a lady next to him who had her hand on his shoulder, indicating she was his mate.

“Hi Kyla, I hope we didn’t startle you. My wife turns into a mom sometimes.” I looked down to see a knitted blanket draped over me.

“These hospitals could be so bland, so I hope you don’t mind that I brought you something from home. I am Lisa and this is my mate, Daniel.”

I smiled at her and nodded because I was too weak to really talk without losing my breath.

“I know that this is a lot to take in, and if you want, we can give you some space.”

But after being so isolated, the last thing I wanted was space. I grabbed both their hands so they wouldn’t go.

I couldn’t have anyone else leave me.

“I don’t want you to leave. Please don’t leave me.” I was begging for human interaction, and I didn’t notice I was crying. They looked at each other, worried, and just stayed.

“Kyla, we had a half breed living there named Danny.” My eyes shot up knowing exactly who my savior was.

“He told us you were there, and our Alpha had us come get you. He told us that you were someone important and it was urgent we got you out. Can you tell us why he said that?” Daniel asked me.

I let out a sigh putting on my fake thinking face. I shook my head.

“They drugged me with vervain every day, three times a day. My memory is really foggy, but the name Danny is familiar.”

I was happy that he hadn’t told them who I was. Just a poor half-breed who couldn’t be a shifter. They asked me a few more questions and listening to them was something I enjoyed. The loneliness put me in such a depressive state that I couldn’t recognize who I was anymore.

“We have to get back to feed our kids but thank you for speaking with us. I will be back to move you to better arrangements so we could put you in the packhouse.”

He reached his arm out to place it on my shoulder, but my instincts caused me to flinch. Which only made him pity me more.

“I’m sorry for that. I am not here to hurt you okay.” He exited the room and Lisa stayed for a second.

“We are good people, babe; we will help you, no worries.” She smiled again and then she was gone. I was longing for her to come back just to know she was there. I cried myself to a deep sleep with nightmares of everything they did to me. He broke me down into a million pieces and now was left with an empty shell of nothing.

I slept most of the days and only was awake to see doctors and nurses checking in on me and telling me about my progress but it’s like my mind shut it all out. It didn’t want to hear it.

“Kyla, hey. I have come back so we can get you out of this dreadful hospital.” Lisa had a backpack which made it clear it was for me.

“They’re clearing you to get out so get changed and I will be out in the hall waiting for you.” Forcing myself out of the bed I looked in the bag to find some leggings and a plain V-neck and some sandals. Clothes were something I missed especially with being naked too. I needed to stick to my persona for now. They all need to forget about it and hope that they think I am dead. When I changed, I walked out to see Lisa waiting out talking to the nurses. She sensed me and turned around.

“Wow, you are a lot taller than I imagined,'' she joked.” I hovered about 5 inches over her.

“Come on let’s get you all settled.”

I followed her out to the outside world and the lights instantly hurt my eyes. She sensed how uneasy I was and looped her arms around me. It felt so nice to believe I could actually have a friend.
