Chapter 711: Chance Encounter in a Restaurant

Chapter 711: Chance Encounter in a Restaurant

After Leah posted on her feed, she looked at herself in the mirror again. Even foundation couldn't hide her dark circles.

"Do you still remember?" she murmured to her reflection.

Back at the movie theater, she had just sat down when Brian slowly leaned over and said in a low voice, "If you don't like it, we can leave."

Leah whispered back, "No, it's fine. Let's just watch."

Brian straightened up and didn't talk to her anymore. Leah didn't want to think about Kevin anymore. She watched the movie, trying her best to get into it.

After the hour-and-a-half movie ended, the harsh lights came on in the theater.

Leah followed Brian out.

"Mr. Scott, what do you usually like to eat?" Leah wanted to treat him to dinner and asked about his preferences.

"I'm allergic to seafood, but anything else is fine," Brian said.

Leah thought for a moment and said, "There's a restaurant downstairs that's pretty good. Want to go there?"

"Sure, let's go."

The two took the elevator down to the sixth floor. This restaurant was quite famous and had plenty of diners, with several people waiting for tables.

Leah had the gold card Alexander gave her, which meant she didn't have to wait at any restaurant in the mall. When the manager saw the gold card, he warmly led them to a good spot.

A waiter brought over the menu. Leah took it and asked, "Since you're not picky, what do you like to eat?"

"Sweet and sour chicken, I guess. I like that," Brian said directly without being polite.

"Anything else?" she asked.

"No, you order what you like."

After ordering, they chatted on and off.

At noon today, Lillian had gone to have lunch with Alexander, but caught him right in the middle of a video conference. It dragged on for so long that by the time it ended, lunch break was already over.

To make it up to her, Alexander brought her to this restaurant too.

As soon as Lillian entered the restaurant, somehow her eyes were sharp enough to spot Leah and Brian right away. She paused, turned back to tug at Alexander, and gave him a look in that direction.

Alexander looked over and said, "Let's sit over there."

"Aren't we going to say hi?" Lillian asked.

"Let's see first," Alexander said, heading toward a window seat.

Alexander ordered a few dishes, then got busy again, taking two or three phone calls in a row. Bored, Lillian looked over toward Leah.

Her seat had a great view with an open sightline. She could see both Leah and Brian clearly, every expression and smile.

She saw the waiter bring them their food. Brian was very gentlemanly, using the serving utensils to put food on Leah's plate first, then pouring her juice.

Brian took a bite of chicken and praised it with delight, "This is really good, very authentic!"

Leah said, "They have real chefs here, their skills are something else. I especially love their lasagna."

Brian asked, "Ms. Sinclair, do you like to travel?"

"You might not believe this, but I don't really like going out."

"In that case, we're pretty similar," Brian said with some surprise. "I only travel when I'm on business trips. I also like staying home normally."

Leah ate her food with a faint smile on her lips.

"What are you looking at?" Alexander asked after hanging up the phone.

Lillian looked away and said, "Just watching Leah."

Alexander's gaze also went over there. "They seem to be chatting pretty well."

"Really?" Lillian pursed her lips. "I don't see it."

Alexander asked, "Then what do you see?"

"It looks boring," Lillian said sympathetically. "He's not someone she likes, but she has to find things to talk about."

Alexander listened, looked over there again, and said nothing.

The food came quickly. The waiter quietly said "Enjoy your meal" and left.

Alexander habitually served Leah food first, then ate himself.

Lillian ate the food in her bowl and asked curiously, "Honey, I've never asked you this - why don't you want Leah and Kevin to be together? Just because Kevin is your assistant? Because their status doesn't match?"

Alexander said, "That's one reason. Also, Kevin has been with me for so many years, we have many enemies. I don't want Leah to suffer because of him."

"What about me then? I think Kevin and I are on the same level, he might even be higher than me. Why can I marry you? Aren't Kevin's enemies your enemies too?" Lillian asked indignantly.

Alexander looked up at her excited face and chuckled. "How is that the same? You're a woman, he's a man! Besides, if we run into danger, Kevin has to protect us. That's his job."

Lillian understood what Alexander meant. He didn't agree because he didn't want Leah to suddenly become a widow someday.

"I get it - men and women are different in a lot of ways. Flip it around: if Kevin were the one who had to move in with the woman's family and live on her terms, I doubt he'd be okay with it," Lillian said. "But I just feel sorry for them. Actually, you could have Kevin switch careers, give him a position in the company."

Alexander said, "Honey, you're being too naive. Do you know how many years it took me to train Kevin? They're loyal to me and do some underworld work for me. People like that thrown into the workplace can't even use a printer properly. How would that work?"

Lillian pressed her lips together. "So you can bear to see Leah suffer?"

After saying this, she looked over at Leah again. Seeing them both eating silently, she said quietly, "Look at Leah, eating without tasting anything. She's not happy at all."

"Not being happy is only temporary," Alexander said. "She's not a child anymore. She knows what she's doing."

Lillian turned her gaze to Brian. "He looks decent enough, just don't know what his character is like."

"Leah's not stupid. If he's not good, she won't settle," Alexander said, seeing his wife looking so worried. "If you're really concerned about her, talk to her after we eat. Get to know more."

"Honey, can't you agree about Kevin? Things might not turn out the way you think. You're so capable, enemies wouldn't dare come after you!"

Alexander sighed. "Honey, have you forgotten about the island? How badly Evelyn got caught up in it."

Mentioning Evelyn, Lillian's face filled with sadness again. She hadn't gone to Caspian's wedding either. After the doctor Alexander contacted examined Evelyn, the results weren't very promising. To get out of the wheelchair would take a miracle.

After being crushed again, Evelyn's last bit of hope was completely gone, and life had no meaning anymore.

Alexander saw her fall silent and knew she had shifted her thoughts to Evelyn.

"Honey, Leah's leaving," Alexander's words brought Lillian back from her sadness. She looked over there.

She got up and walked over. "Leah."

"Lillian?" Leah was surprised. "What a coincidence!"

"I came with your brother," Lillian said, glancing at Brian. "Are you going anywhere else? I want to buy gifts for Henry and William. Come with me."
