Maya's Infiltration

Maya's Infiltration
Maya's POV

The mind control machine was buzzing right next to my ear, and I had to pretend it was working on me.
"Stay calm, Maya," I told myself. "Just act like a robot."
Two seconds ago, I had been Maya Chen, Sarah's best friend and a skilled bodyguard. Now I had to pretend to be Maya the controlled puppet, or these security guards would learn I was still free and probably kill me.
The hardest part was keeping my eyes from showing fear. All the other controlled people had that blank, empty stare. Like someone had erased their identities and left only shells behind.
"Subject acquired," one of the guards said into his radio. "Taking her to the main facility."
I let them grab my arms and walk me forward like I couldn't think for myself. Inside, I was screaming. Just ten minutes ago, I had watched my best friend Sarah learn the horrible truth about her family. Then the ghost had used some kind of device to separate us, and I ended up running through the bush being chased by controlled soldiers.
When they trapped me, I had to make a split-second decision: fight and probably die, or pretend to be controlled and maybe find a way to help Sarah from the inside.
So I faked being caught by their mind control ray.
Now I was walking like a zombie between two armed guards, trying not to throw up from fear.
"Keep your face blank," I told myself. "Don't blink too much. Walk like you're sleepwalking."
The guards led me toward a huge building that looked like a cross between a hospital and a jail. There were no windows, just smooth white walls and doors that needed special cards to open.
"Another one for programming," the first guard said as we walked through the door.
Programming? That sounded horrible.
Inside, I saw something that made my fake-blank face almost crack. There were dozens of people sitting in chairs with weird caps on their heads. The hats had wires and flashing lights. But these weren't just regular people.
I recognized at least six world leaders from different countries. The President of Germany was in one chair. The Prime Minister of Japan was in another. They were all just sitting there while robots did something to their brains.
"Oh my God," I thought. "How long has this been going on?"
A woman in a white coat walked over to us. Her eyes had that same sparkle as all the controlled people.
"New subject?" she asked.
"Yes, Doctor. Found her hiding in the jungle. The device worked perfectly."
The doctor looked at me closely. I tried to keep my face as empty as possible.
"Good body tone. Military training, possibly. She'll be useful for security detail once we finish her training." The doctor wrote something on a clipboard. "Take her to Room 7. We'll start the full process in twenty minutes."
My heart was beating so fast I was sure they could hear it. But I just nodded slightly like the other controlled people did.
The guards walked me down a long hallway. I counted the doors as we passed: Room 1, Room 2, Room 3. Each room had a small window, and inside I could see more people in computer chairs.
When we reached Room 7, one of the guards opened the door.
"Sit," he ordered.
I sat in the computer chair and let them put the helmet on my head. The helmet was heavy and had dozens of wires connected to it. I could feel small electric shocks, but I forced myself not to respond.
"Begin phase one programming," the doctor said over an intercom.
The machine started humming louder. I felt something trying to push into my thoughts, like someone trying to force their way into my mind. But I fought back quietly, building mental walls like my martial arts teacher had taught me for meditation.
"Hmm," the doctor's voice said. "She's showing some resistance. Increase power to level 3."
The pushing feeling got stronger. I gritted my teeth and tried to look like I was falling asleep. Meanwhile, I was studying everything around me. The room had computer panels, keyboards, and what looked like a communication system in the corner.
"Better," the doctor said. "Leave her for thirty minutes. The programming needs time to take hold."
The guards left, closing the door behind them.
As soon as I was alone, I carefully pulled the helmet off my head. The machine was still running, so anyone watching would think it was still trying to control me.
I rushed to the communication system and turned it on. My hands were shaking as I tried to figure out how to use it. There were buttons and switches everywhere.
Finally, I found what looked like a radio station. I grabbed the microphone and whispered into it.
"This is Agent Maya Chen calling any FBI units. Emergency code Red-Seven. We have multiple stolen world leaders on an unknown island. Repeat, this is not a drill. Sarah Kane and Elena Cross are in immediate danger."
I gave our last known locations and described the mind control operation as quickly as I could.
"The ghost is real," I whispered into the microphone. "It's some kind of artificial intelligence that controls people through technology. It has been swapping world leaders with controlled doubles. Send military backup immediately."
Just as I finished the message, I heard footsteps in the hallway.
I quickly put the helmet back on my head and sat perfectly still, trying to look unconscious.
The door opened.
"How is she progressing?" It was the doctor's voice.
"Wait," said another voice. "Look at the information system. Someone's been using it."
My blood turned to ice.
"Check the transmission logs," the doctor ordered.
I heard typing on a keyboard.
"There was an outbound message sent two minutes ago. Emergency alarm call to the FBI mainland."
"That's impossible. She's been under training the whole time."
"Unless..." The second voice got scary and quiet. "Unless she's immune like the other one."
I felt the helmet being ripped off my head. When I opened my eyes, three controlled guards were pointing guns at me, and the doctor was looking at me with those glowing eyes.
"Hello, Maya," the doctor said in the ghost's voice. "Thank you for the message. Now I know exactly what the FBI is planning."
"What do you mean?" I asked, trying to sound confused.
The doctor smiled a cold, controlled smile. "You see, Maya, I didn't just let you send that message by accident. I wanted you to contact the mainland."
My stomach dropped. "Why?"
"Because now I know your FBI friends will come to help you. And when they do, my controlled agents in the FBI will be ready for them."
I discovered the horrible truth. "You have people inside the FBI."
"I have people everywhere, Maya. Your message just told me exactly when and where to set my trap." The doctor's eyes glowed brighter. "The FBI relief team will arrive tomorrow morning. They think they're coming to save you."
"But they're not," I whispered.
"No, Maya. They're coming to join my army. Every single FBI agent who answers to your call will be captured and controlled. Thanks to you, I'll soon have the most powerful law enforcement body in America working for me."
The guards grabbed my arms, but I wasn't thinking about flight anymore. I was thinking about all the good FBI agents who would try to help us.
All the people who would become puppets because of the word I sent.
"Take her to the special holding cell," the doctor ordered. "And Maya? Don't worry about your friends Sarah and Elena. You'll see them again very soon."
"What do you mean?"
The doctor's smile got even more scary. "I'm bringing all three of you together for the final trial. You see, I've found something fascinating about Sarah's immunity. It only works when she's trying to protect people she loves."
My heart stopped.
"So tomorrow, when the FBI comes, I'm going to make Sarah watch while I control you and Elena. And when her immunity fails because she can't bear to see you hurt..." The doctor laughed. "Sarah Kane will finally become mine."
As they dragged me away, I realized I hadn't just failed to help Sarah.
I had doomed us all.
