The Island's Truth

The Island's Truth
Sarah's POV
The gun of Agent Rodriguez was aimed right at my chest, and her eyes had that awful sparkle I'd seen before. The same sparkle Vincent had when the ghost was in charge of him.
"Run!" I screamed at Maya and Elena, but people in charge were coming at us from all sides. Their actions were too smooth and in sync with each other. Like robots that act like people.
Agent Rodriguez spoke as the ghost and said, "There's nowhere to run, Sarah." "Thank you for coming to my island. You are right where you should be.
I thought my heart would burst because it was beating so fast. We were surrounded by hundreds of controlled people, including what looked like the President of France and the Prime Minister of Canada. How was this possible?
"Sarah, what do we do?" Maya whispered. Her face was pale with fear.
Before I could answer, the controlled people all stopped walking at exactly the same time. They stood there staring at us without moving. It was the creepiest thing I'd ever seen.
"You can't control me," I said to Agent Rodriguez, trying to sound stronger than I felt. "I broke free before, and I'll do it again."
Agent Rodriguez laughed, but it wasn't her laugh. It was cold and automatic. "Oh, Sarah. You have no idea what you really are, do you?"
"What do you mean?"
"Your immunity isn't an accident. It's in your blood. Your family has been part of this story much longer than you know."
I felt sick. "You're lying."
"Am I? Tell me, Sarah, what happened to your grandmother during the war?"
My stomach dropped. How could this thing know about Grandma Rose? She died when I was ten, but she used to tell me strange stories about studies and tests. I always thought they were just dreams from the war.
"She was in a camp," I said slowly. "She survived, but she never talked about what happened there."
"She didn't just live, Sarah. She was picked. Special. Just like you."
Agent Rodriguez gestured with her gun, and all the controlled people started moving toward us again. "There's an old bunker on this island. Your grandmother's records are still there. Would you like to see the truth about your family?"
"Don't listen to her," Elena whispered. "It's a trap."
But I had to know. My whole life, I'd felt different. Like I could sense things other people couldn't. Like I was always one step ahead of the crooks I chased. What if there was a reason?
"Fine," I said. "Show me."
Agent Rodriguez smiled that terrible controlled smile. "Follow the road behind those trees. The bunker is underground. But Sarah... your friends stay here with me."
"No way," Maya said. "We stick together."
"Then you all stay here and become my puppets," Agent Rodriguez said. The controlled people moved closer, reaching out with their hands like zombies.
I had to make a choice fast. Trust this thing and maybe learn the truth about my family, or watch Maya and Elena get controlled right in front of me.
"I'll go," I said. "But if you hurt them, I'll find a way to kill you." "Hurry back, Sarah. My patience has limits."
I ran toward the trees, my heart racing. The road was overgrown and hard to see, but I found it. It led to a metal door built into the side of a hill. The door was old and rusty, but it opened when I pulled the handle.
Inside was a long tunnel with lights that flickered on automatically. My footsteps rang as I walked deeper underground. The walls were covered with old papers and pictures.
Then I saw her.
Grandma Rose was in one of the photos, but she looked young. Maybe twenty years old. She was standing with a group of other young women in front of some kind of machine. The text said "Test Group 7 - Resistance Subjects - 1943."
My hands were shaking as I read the files. The trials weren't just about hurting people. They were trying to make humans who couldn't be controlled. Humans who were immune to mind trickery.
"Oh my God," I whispered. "Grandma, what did they do to you?"
I kept reading. The tests worked on some people. Their children and grandkids would carry the immunity in their genes. Only one in a million people had this safety.
That's why I could resist the ghost. That's why I could break free when others couldn't.
But then I found something that made my blood turn cold.
There was another file. A newer one. My name was written at the top in red ink: "Sarah Kane - Third Generation Immune - Priority Target."
The ghost had been watching me my entire life.
I heard footsteps in the hallway behind me. Someone was coming. I grabbed the files and ran deeper into the cave, looking for another way out.
The footsteps got faster. Whoever was chasing me was running now.
I found a back escape and burst outside into the jungle. Maya and Elena were nowhere to be seen, but I could hear Agent Rodriguez's words echoing across the island through loudspeakers.
"Sarah, I know what you found. Your immunity makes you very valuable to me. But it also makes you very dangerous."
I started running through the trees, clutching the files. Now I knew the truth about my family, but I still didn't know how to use my protection to save my friends.
That's when I heard Maya scream.
It was coming from the other side of the island. They weren't just holding Maya and Elena hostage. Something terrible was happening to them.
I ran faster than I'd ever run in my life, twigs scratching my face and arms. But as I got closer to Maya's voice, I realized something that made my heart stop.
Maya wasn't screaming in fear.
She was screaming in pain.
And mixed in with her yells, I could hear Elena crying, "Sarah, it's too late! The ghost is inside our heads! It's changing us!"
When I finally reached the clearing where I'd left them, what I saw made me fall to my knees in fear.
Maya and Elena were standing perfectly still with their backs to me. Their heads were tilted at the same odd angle as all the other controlled people.
But when they slowly turned around to face me, their eyes weren't just sparkling.
They were shining like fire.
"Hello, Sarah," Maya said in the ghost's voice. "Thank you for coming back. Now we can begin the real experiment."
"What real experiment?" I whispered.
Elena stepped forward, her burning eyes looking right through me. "We're going to find out what happens when an immune person watches her best friends die."
