Chapter 29 Final step

Erica~

I sat alone in the garden, my heart heavy with longing for Loki. Every part of me yearned for his presence, his touch, his love. But as I sat there, lost in my thoughts, Ronald appeared before me, a smile playing on his lips.

"Erica," he said, his voice filled with false sweetness. "May I join you?"

I forced a smile, my heart sinking at the sight of him. Ronald had always been kind to me, but my heart belonged to Loki. I couldn't bear the thought of being with anyone else, especially not Ronald.

"Of course," I replied, my voice lacking the enthusiasm I usually had when Loki was around. I tried my best to hide my disappointment, to pretend that everything was fine.

Ronald took a seat next to me, his hand reaching out to touch mine. I flinched at his touch, a wave of disgust washing over me. How had I ever loved him so effortlessly in my previous life? It felt like a distant memory now.

"Is something bothering you, Erica?" Ronald asked, his voice filled with concern. He could sense my hesitation, my reluctance to be close to him.

I let out a strange, forced laugh, trying to brush off his question. "Oh, it's nothing. Just a bad mood, I suppose."

Ronald raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced by my response. "Are you sure? You seem... distant."

I looked away, unable to meet his gaze. How could I explain to him that my heart belonged to another, that every moment spent with him felt like a betrayal? I couldn't bear to hurt him, but I also couldn't deny my own feelings.

"It's just been a long day," I finally replied, my voice filled with a hint of sadness. "I'm just tired, that's all."

Ronald nodded, his expression filled with understanding. But I could see the disappointment in his eyes, the longing for a connection that I couldn't give him. It broke my heart to see him like this, but I couldn't pretend to feel something I didn't.

As we sat there in silence, a mix of guilt and sadness washed over me. I longed for Loki's presence, his understanding, his love. But he was nowhere to be found, and I had to make do with the company of someone who couldn't truly fill the void in my heart.

I watched as Ronald tried to make small talk, to create a sense of intimacy between us. But every word he spoke felt hollow, as if it were a mere echo of what I truly desired. I couldn't help but feel trapped in this charade, pretending to be happy when all I wanted was to be with Loki.

As the minutes ticked by, I found myself growing more restless. I wanted to escape, to be alone with my thoughts, to search for Loki and confront him about his actions. But I knew that I had to stay, to maintain the facade of happiness for the sake of those around me.

Eventually, Ronald noticed my unease and sighed, his shoulders slumping. "Erica, I can tell that something is wrong. If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here for you."

I nodded, grateful for his offer of support. But deep down, I knew that Ronald could never truly understand the depth of my pain, the longing I felt for Loki. He was just a bystander in this complicated love story, unaware of the true extent of my heartache.

"Thank you, Ronald," I said softly, my voice filled with a mix of gratitude and sadness. "I appreciate your kindness."

We sat there in silence for a while longer, the weight of unspoken words hanging in the air.

I couldn't bear to spend another moment in Ronald's presence. Every second felt like a betrayal to my heart, a pretense of happiness that I couldn't maintain. I needed to escape, to find Loki and confront him about his actions.

"I'm sorry, Ronald," I said, my voice trembling with a mix of anxiety and urgency. "I just remembered an important task I need to attend to. I must go."

Before Ronald could respond, I stood up abruptly, pulling my hand away from his grasp. The disappointment in his eyes was evident, but I couldn't let that deter me. I needed to find Loki and find out the truth.

But as I made my way towards Loki's chambers, my heart pounding in my chest, I hesitated. What if I was overreacting? What if there was a reasonable explanation for his behavior? Doubt crept into my mind, clouding my judgment.

As I pondered my next move, I noticed a flicker of movement in the corner of my eye. I turned my head and saw Loki in the kitchen, engaged in a discussion with Frances. My heart skipped a beat, and I couldn't tear my eyes away.

Hidden from their view, I watched as Loki listened intently to Frances's words, a smile playing on his lips. He seemed genuinely happy, completely engrossed in their conversation. And then, with a casual gesture, he adjusted her hair, a gesture that I knew all too well.

A surge of jealousy washed over me, mingled with a deep sense of betrayal. How could he be so happy in someone else's presence? Did he not understand how much I longed for him, how much I needed him?

In that moment, all rational thought disappeared. I couldn't stand there and watch him with someone else, pretending that everything was alright. I needed to confront him, to demand answers.

But before I could gather my thoughts and make a move, Frances excused herself from the conversation and left the kitchen. Loki glanced around, his gaze searching for something or someone. It was then that I realized I needed to hide, to observe him without being seen.

I quickly ducked behind a nearby counter, my heart pounding in my chest. I watched as Loki's eyes scanned the room, searching for any sign of me. My breath caught in my throat as our eyes finally met, and I saw a flicker of surprise in his expression. But he quickly recovered, his face returning to its usual composed state.

I watched as he made his way towards the exit, his footsteps echoing in the silence of the kitchen. The sight of him walking away, seemingly unaffected by my presence, fueled my anger and jealousy even more. How could he be so oblivious to my pain?

As soon as he was out of sight, I emerged from my hiding place, determined to confront him. My heart raced with a mix of anticipation and fear as I followed his path, hoping to find him and demand the truth.

But as I reached his chambers, I hesitated once again. What if I couldn't handle the truth? What if confronting him only led to more heartache? Doubts and insecurities filled my mind, making it difficult to take that final step.
