Chapter 157 Mafia Monster

Chapter 157 Mafia Monster
Violet,

" How dare you touch her! I will break your hand!" Knox's outburst was too terrifying to stand still. His voice cracked through the air, raw and feral. He threw some random punches until he barely managed to take a breath, his chest heaving, knuckles trembling with barely contained rage.

I threw my arms around his waist, my fingers digging into his coat, pulling him away from Xavier with all the strength I had. My pulse hammered violently against my ribs. Xavier looked too shocked to make a sound, eyes wide, lips parted, frozen where he stood.

" Enough! Knox! What the hell are you doing?" I snapped, my voice sharp and shaking as I pushed him away from us. My palms burned from the contact. " Have you lost your mind?"

My body was shaking at this point. My knees felt weak as I rushed to Xavier, who barely breathed enough to stand up, his posture unsteady. " Are you okay? Take a breath!" I held his arm instinctively, my hands cold.

He was shaking, fingers curling into his jacket. " Man! What was that?" he whispered, voice hoarse, eyes darting back toward Knox.

" I am sorry. I don't know what's gotten into him." I swallowed hard, guilt tightening my chest. " Get in the car. I will buy some first aid -!"

" Don't touch him." Knox snarled, his voice low and dangerous. He tried to grab my hand, his grip rough, and that was when my hand flew right onto his face with a sharp crack.

" Shut the fuck up, Knox. Come to your senses. This is not some fucking game!" My hand trembled after the impact, fingers stinging.

He froze, staring at me in disbelief, jaw slack, breath caught mid-air. " Why are you with him? What's the relationship between you two?" His eyes searched my face desperately.

" What did you just say?" I asked, my brows narrowing as my stomach dropped. " Don't tell me you were just trying to kill a man just because of jealousy?"

He paused, completely still, eyes flickering as if something inside him fractured.

" What the hell? Knox! Did you really do that?" My voice cracked despite my effort to stay composed.

" What's going on between you two?" he repeated, his voice quieter but more desperate.

I couldn't believe that he asked that question again. " What's with you? Does it have anything to do with you? Remember? We are nothing. What's my relationship with whoever has nothing to do with you!" My hands curled into fists at my sides.

" What?" His eyes widened, shock washing over his face. " I think we are married!"

" So? You can do whatever you want, but I have to act like a good wife?" My voice trembled with anger and exhaustion.

" N-No. That's not what I meant. I -!" His shoulders sagged slightly.

" Stop this. Your therapist said you are just lost. So try to work with the tasks she gave you. And... don't dare to act like a freaking mafia monster in front of me. It disgusts me!" The words slipped out before I could stop them.

" Mafia monster?" He repeated, blinking slowly.

The color drained from my face as the realization hit. I had crossed the line. But just what I saw in his face... it was pure rage, raw and ancient, the kind that could kill a person without a second hesitation. My throat tightened.

I hurriedly got into the car and drove to the hospital nearby, my hands shaking on the steering wheel.

" Are you sure leaving him there alone is the right choice?" Xavier asked while trying to press the napkin against the wound, his voice strained.

" I am sorry, Xavier. But I think he is just lost." I swallowed hard, eyes glued to the road. " It's hard for him to adjust to a life that is practically not his and -!"

" Chill, dude!" He chuckled weakly. " Ouch. It hurts!"

" Sorry!" I gripped the steering wheel tightly enough to whiten my knuckles.

" Nah... don't say anything. Actually, it's my fault!" He winced slightly.

" What do you mean?" I asked, my voice calm but alert.

" I knew that he was standing there, with Sarah Smith across the road!"

I froze, almost hitting the brake. " What did you just say?" My heart thudded violently.

" I saw him standing there with Sarah Smith. I thought maybe if I could make him jealous, he would come here as soon as he saw me flirting with you!"

" You did it knowing that he would go violent?" My fingers tightened around the wheel.

" Knox hates my guts even when he doesn't know me. Lmfao! I missed him and his pretty angry monkey face." He shrugged, wincing again.

" You could have done something else. Why did you do that?" I exhaled sharply.

" Well, isn't separating Knox away from Sarah our first priority? Now our people can find her immediately!"

His words stunned me. He had gone through all of that just to make sure Knox didn't get hurt by that woman.

" Thank you!" I smiled softly. " You have been such a good friend!"

" Yesss!! Finally. The greatest businesswoman finally acknowledged me as her friend!"

" Shut up. You are still bleeding, man!" I threw him a tissue while dialing Mirah's number.

" What are you doing?" he asked.

" I need to tell her to search her location!"

" Don't bother... Sarah Smith will be in your hand within an hour or two. The game is ending soon, Violet! It's just that you should concentrate on your family from now on!"

" I am with my family." I chuckled softly, though my chest felt heavy.

" No. I mean Knox. That poor guy is just confused. Love can't be hidden under confusion, you know. Did you see his eyes? He was a broken piece."

" It's fine. He needs time and -!" I whispered.

" No... he just needs assurance." He leaned into the seat, staring outside. " You know what Knox is like. Whenever he got something in his mind, he would get to the bottom of it. Right now, what he needs is to understand that we aren't faking anything!"

" You seem to know Knox more." I glanced at him briefly.

" Well, I have been working on his case for years, Violet. Right now, Knox isn't facing doubts about the love he has for you. He is having the fear of losing himself." His voice softened. " He has been a mafia leader who lived with blood, crimes, and other unspeakable things. Right now, he is approaching another reality where he may face someone very different from his current comfortable self. It's terrifying to think. You will lose yourself to someone very different from your current self. It's unthinkable!"

" That's true!" I whispered, my throat tight. " Do you think it was a bad idea that we told him he hated this profession?" I asked, guilt creeping in. My jaw tightened until it hurt.

" No. It'll make him slowly accept what's coming next," he said quietly. " What did his therapist say?" he asked.

" Same thing. He is unable to trust anyone around us since he doesn't know the truth."

" He knows the truth, but he doesn't want to believe it!" Xavier corrected,

" Possible!" I took a sharp breath.

" You know what you should do, Violet. You are the most intelligent woman I have ever met. And it'll be over. Soon!"

I nodded quietly. I had to apologize for everything I just said and had done.
