Chapter 56 Revenge, Ambush!
Danger! Revenge! Ambush!
These words sent Rachel's heart racing, her pupils widening in alarm.
She furrowed her brows, took a deep breath to steady herself, and glanced at the clock. It was 7:36 PM, giving her only 33 minutes until 8:09.
The drive to Azure Sky Law Firm usually took about twenty minutes.
But there was a major road notorious for rush hour traffic in between.
Getting stuck there for an hour wouldn't be surprising.
A detour would also add at least thirty minutes to the trip, assuming no traffic.
After a moment of thought, she dialed Benjamin's number without hesitation. The phone rang, but no one picked up.
She tried calling him on WhatsApp, but again, no response.
Rachel's frown deepened, her heartbeat quickening.
She couldn't reach Benjamin.
And there wasn't enough time to get there. She bit her lip, quickly searched online for Azure Sky Law Firm's contact number, and dialed.
After a few rings, a clear voice answered, "Hello, Azure Sky Law Firm. How can I help you?"
"Hey, is Benjamin there?" Rachel asked urgently.
The receptionist hesitated, suspecting she might be fishing for Benjamin's contact information, a common occurrence.
"Do you have a case you need assistance with?" she asked politely.
Rachel was direct. "Just tell me if he's there. If he is, make sure he doesn't go to the parking lot!"
The receptionist was taken aback, not understanding. "Mr. Wright is out on a field assignment today. He's not at the office right now. Is there a problem with the parking lot?"
"Will he be back at the office tonight?" Rachel pressed.
"I'm not sure. Mr. Wright often works late."
If Benjamin drove back to the office, he would definitely go to that parking lot.
Rachel thanked her and hung up. It was now 7:41 PM.
Her heart raced as she tried to stay calm and think clearly. Panicking would only make things worse.
She clenched her fists and lost in thought.
Calling the police wouldn't help since she didn't know the exact location of the danger in the parking lot or when the person would appear.
Plus, it would raise questions about how she knew someone was lying in wait at the parking lot from so far away.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through her mind. She grabbed her phone and dialed another number. "Billy, I need you to get someone and head to Wheelside Haven Parking near Azure Sky Law Firm immediately."
Billy Richardson on the other end of the line was momentarily stunned but didn't question her. "Got it, I'm on my way."
After hanging up, he quickly gathered someone and headed to Wheelside Haven Parking.
Rachel exhaled slightly in relief.
Iron Guard Security was a bodyguard company near Azure Sky Law Firm, and it was a lot closer than Stargaze Gallery.
Besides, bodyguards were much more reliable than she was.
In Dawnlight City, wealthy families often had at least two bodyguards with them at all times, especially businesspeople.
Steven always had bodyguards with him, and their villa was guarded daily.
Rachel didn't like having people around her all the time, so she rarely even had a driver.
Billy and three other bodyguards were contracted under her command, available for her to dispatch as needed.
Wasting no time, she grabbed her coat and bag and hurried out of her office. She couldn't take the main road, fearing the traffic jam.
She had to take the detour.
As she reached the office area, she saw Nancy, looking frail and weak, stepping out of the elevator with a file in her hands.
Her face was pale, eyes watery, looking pitiful.
Nancy had been unwell all day, clearly suffering from a cold.
Despite several colleagues advising her to take a sick day and get medical care, she had only smiled weakly.
Seeing Rachel ready to leave, Nancy's eyes brightened slightly.
She planned to pretend to faint after Rachel left, hoping the hospital would call Steven. He wouldn't ignore her then.
"Rachel, are you leaving?" Nancy asked softly, covering her mouth.
"Yeah," Rachel replied indifferently, eyeing her warily. "You should go home if you're sick. With so many people at Stargaze Gallery, you could easily spread it around."
Nancy's face turned slightly embarrassed, adopting an innocent look. "I thought Stargaze Gallery needed all the help it could get right now. I took a day off yesterday, so I didn't want to skip today."
"Go home early," Rachel said, not wanting to hear more about Nancy's self-sacrifice, and stepped into the elevator.
Benjamin had left to discuss a case earlier in the morning, around ten.
The parking lot was dimly lit as he prepared to park his car. A loud thud sounded, and the right tire suddenly deflated.
Benjamin pulled his car over to check the tire and spotted a giant thumbtack lodged in it.
Frowning, he sensed an unusual breeze.
Years in the legal profession had earned him many enemies and plenty of retribution. His sense of danger was finely tuned.
As the dim streetlight cast a shadow, Benjamin's face darkened. His eyes narrowed, and as a baseball bat swung down, he deftly dodged, grabbing his attacker's collar and kneeing him in the stomach.
The attacker grunted in pain, struggling to fight back, swinging the bat at Benjamin's head again.
Benjamin caught his wrist, twisting it sharply. A scream pierced the air.
