Jess’s POV
When the pie arrived, he moved his chair around so that we were sat next to each other and we both dug in. As soon as we had finished the waiter took away the plate and brought the cheque for Kieran. When the meal was paid for, we walked back to parking lot. The limo was gone, and Kieran’s car was in its place.
“Where did the limo go?”
“I arranged for them to go and get my car while we were eating that way I could just take you straight home. That’s ok, isn’t it?”
“Yes of course it is” I shook my head as I climbed into the car. “So, you said you had something to tell me after the meal, and I can see that it has been eating you up the whole night so spill”
“Ok” he started the car and drove in silence. I was about to tell him to just bloody tell me when he started to speak. “Grahams asked to see me when I got to work, and I have some bad news to tell you”
I felt tears come to my eyes
“He is not mad that we are going out, is he?”
Kieran laughed then “No he actually said that he thought that we made a cute couple”
“Then what is it?”
“I am being sent on an assignment and I am not sure how long it will take”
“What kind of assignment?”
“There has been some strange activity up north. I have been asked to go and investigate”
“When do you leave?”
“That’s the not so good part. I am leaving tonight”
I could no longer keep the tears under control one escaped and that was it I broke down “And you have no idea when you will be back?”
“No, it could be a couple of months, or it could be a couple of years”
“Can someone else not go? Like Yates?”
“No Jess I am the best person for this job. If this had happened in a couple of months then they would have sent you with me, but they need you here to train you”
“Who is going to be my mentor?”
“You’re lucky in that part Grahams has told me that he is going to take you under his wing. You should feel very honoured he is not the kind of man to take someone under his wing, but he likes you and wants to help you become what you’re capable of”
He pulled up outside my house and Hayley was sat on my front step waiting for me.
“I called her while you were getting your dress fitted. She is going to stay the night with you”
“But she is meant to be leaving tonight”
“I know she is going to meet her family tomorrow. She wants to stay and help you tonight”
Kieran got out of the car and opened the door for me.
“I know that I cannot ask you to wait for me as I have no idea how long I will be, but I will keep in contact with you I promise you that. I love you Jess”
“I love you too and I will wait for you. There is no one else in the world that I want to be with but you”
Kieran pulled me into his arms and held me. We were both crying. He held me that way until his phone rang. He pulled away and looked at the screen. He flipped it open listened and then hung up.
“You have to go now”
“Yeah, I do. I will ring you as soon as I arrive and get settled” He gave me a final kiss and climbed into his car and drove off. I watched him until he turned off my street. Then I collapsed in tears on my front lawn. Hayley walked silently over to me and picked me up and carried me inside. I started to laugh.
“Ok please tell me that you are not going crazy on me now?”
“No am sorry it just that must have looked so funny if anyone saw”
“What?”
“You, picking me up like I weighed nothing”
“No one saw I made sure of that before I picked you up”
“Hey, how did you get into my house?”
“You left your window open, so I climbed in and opened the door from the inside. I did not think that you would mind”
“He’s gone”
“Yeah, but he will come back when he is finished”
“Yeah, whenever that will be”
“Look on the bright side now you have time to study and learn from Grahams”
“Yeah, you’re right if I put all of my energy in to that the time might fly-by”
“Also, it’s almost the end of school. Exams start in a month, so you have to study for them and then go and work full time”
“Yeah, maybe he did choose a good time to go. I do need to study, and he is going to stay in contact so I can still talk to him”
“Exactly”
I was glad that Kieran called Hayley. I loved my other friends, but Hayley had a way of putting things that made you see sense, and I loved her for that.
“Talking about keeping in contact. I hope that you will too”
“Yes, I will. I am going to come and visit all the time too. I will probably visit you more than the others though”
“Why? I was the one who ditched you not long ago. I thought I would be the one that you visited the least”
“Jess, you freaked out. If I was human, I think that I would have done the exact same thing”
“Ok I guess but that does not explain why you will see me more than the others”
“I know but I cannot tell you, but I can tell you that you will find out tomorrow”
“Fine. Thank you as well for making me see that Kieran going away for a bit is not such a bad thing. I mean it’s not like we broke up we are just going to have a long-distance relationship for a bit”
