Chapter 35 Chapter 35
Kieran’s POV
The rest of the meal was amazing, and I hated that it had to come to an end. I paid the bill, and we left the restaurant, and my car was waiting of us. I opened the door for Jess before climbing behind the wheel. The night was now over, and I needed to take Jess home, then I would not see her again for ten years. Jess knew something was wrong and pushed me to tell her. She wanted to know when I would be back, and I could not bear to tell her that I would not see her till we were fighting the war together. I knew I should break up with her, but I couldn’t do it. I loved her too much and I didn’t want to think about her being with someone else. I didn’t care if that made me selfish. We pulled up outside her house, and she noticed Hayley sat outside. I had called her and explained everything while Jess was getting her dress fitted. Out of all her friends she was the one who I trusted to make sure that Jess was ok. I was pissed off that her family were also making her leave, it would leave Jess with only two friends, and I wanted her surrounded by people she loved to make the pain less. I opened the door for Jess and helped her out.
“I know that I cannot ask you to wait for me as I have no idea how long I will be, but I will keep in contact with you I promise you that. I love you Jess” Would she do it? Would she wait for ten years for me?
“I love you too and I will wait for you. There is no one else in the world that I want to be with but you”
That’s all I needed to hear, I pulled her into my arms and let the tears flow. I held her until my phone rang and I slowly pulled away looking at Grahams name flashing on my screen. I did not say anything I just answered and held the phone to my ear.
“Its time for you to return to the warehouse” he told me then hung up.
““You have to go now” Jess asked
“Yeah, I do. I will ring you as soon as I arrive and get settled” I told her knowing I would most likely not be allowed. I gave her one final kiss before climbing back in the car and driving off. I forced myself not to look back, as I knew if I did, I would turn around and refuse to leave her. I arrived at the warehouse and Grahams was waiting for me.
“I hate doing this to you both” He sighed “But we can not have Jess distracted. We have all seen the way you look at each other, and we know you are in love”
“How do you know that sending me away won’t be a distraction?” I growled
“If its too hard and affects her training, then I will bring you back” He sighed “But we need to prepare for war. I am going to be sending you to monitor the satellites and track the movement of the spaceships”
“I thought I was going to be training people?”
“You where, but with your skills in tracking I thought you would be better suited tracking the movements of the Aliens and making sure the equipment is maintained”
“Will I be allowed to contact her?”
“No” he sighed “I will let her know how you are doing, and I will let you know how she is doing, but I think its best that you have no contact with each other”
“I fucking hate this” I growled.
“I know you do, but you are a good agent, and I know you will follow your superiors’ orders”
“Trust me I am thinking about not following orders” I sighed.
“Its only ten years, you are both young” He sighed as he handed me a tablet “I will send your jobs to the tablet” He then handed me a black card “Use this card to buy anything you need and for accommodation when required. You can use your car until you need to upgrade and then just send me an invoice for a new one”
I turned on the tablet and put the location of my first job into my phone. I did not even bother saying bye, I just climbed back into my car and drove off towards my first job. It was a four-hour drive so it would give me plenty of time to clear my mind. It looked like Grahams had already arranged for accommodation for me as a message came up on my phone just after I set off.
The next ten years all blended into each other, All I did was work, I did not interact with hardly anyone. A couple of men were at each site monitoring the satellite feeds, but I was not their long enough to make friends. I was on my way back to the head office to Grahams when the aliens attacked. I had no idea how they managed to get past our satellites, but they did and as I tried to track our agents, I discovered that most if not all of them had been taken. All I could think about was Jess as I went straight to Grahams and found him at the warehouse on his own.
“Where are the others?” I asked as I looked around.
“Bridget and Justin left, they fell in love or some shit” he grumbled “It’s the weekend so Jess was meeting her family. I need to call her”
“Don’t” I yelled as I started to type on my tablet “They can track movement though the cell towers, that’s how the attacks worked so well. They targeted the areas with the most population based on cell coverage”
Grahams quickly turned his phone off and left it on a table “We need to get to Jess, I think we should head to her house first”
I nodded even though I had a feeling Jess would not be happy to see me after all this time.
