Chapter 67 Break up

Chapter 67 Break up
CHAPTER 68

NANCY’S POV

In actuality, I wasn’t blind to it. I just chose to ignore

“You won’t believe this!” Diana exclaimed.

I glanced over my shoulder, looking over the sofa where I was sprawled, to the kitchen where she stood with her eyes glued to her phone.

My gaze shifted slowly to Chloe, who sat to my left, looking equally confused.

She had followed us home after school today and had been kind enough to have her driver, Jules, bring us back.

Jules was a really nice guy, tall and buff with really deep dimples. He reminded me of a teddy bear I used to own.

Not like it was right to compare people to inanimate objects, but I just couldn’t really fathom how someone who looked like that could be a bodyguard to the daughter of a wealthy man, but as I later heard from Chloe, he was really capable and wasn’t to be trifled with.

Diana had seconded that, and I no longer dared to underestimate the man with the cuddly teddy-bear charm.

“What are you gasping over?” Chloe asked, bringing my attention back to the fact that Diana had indeed just broken the silence by exclaiming.

“This is huge news!” She lifted her head with eyes shining with both disbelief and amusement.

She looked like she was excited over something that I suspected she shouldn’t even be that happy about in the first place.

I was right, and I figured that out when she walked hurriedly over to us, thrusting her phone in my face so I could look at it.

“What’s this?” I squinted my eyes, not understanding.

It looked like some sort of school forum or a group chat, but I couldn’t make out what they were discussing.

“Oh, right, you don’t know how this works,” Diana nodded, pulling her phone back.

From the corner of my eye, I could already make out Chloe pulling hers out as well, probably to check out what Diana was talking about.

Suddenly, she exclaimed as well, and Diana straightened, smirking with a knowing look.

Now, I was the only one left in the dark, confused as to what was going on.

Chloe didn't leave me hanging for too long before she revealed it to me.

“Mason and Vanessa broke up.”

“They did?” I was so surprised that my eyes bulged.

This morning, wasn't she just telling me to stay away from him…?

“Yes, they did.” Diana nodded, then added after a brief pause, “Mason just confirmed it.”

“He did? Where?” Chloe craned her neck forward.

Diana turned her phone so she could take a look. “I asked him if it was true, and he just sent me a text in return, confirming it.”

“He said he broke things off.”

“Did he tell you why?” I asked, curious.

My mind was already going round in circles, trying to think of a reason why he would do that.

I certainly hoped it wasn’t because of me.

Who knew what Vanessa would do if that was the case? I hadn’t even interfered in their relationship, and she was already antagonizing me.

Who was to say she wouldn’t do worse if my conjecture turned out to be true?

“No, it doesn’t make sense.”

I didn’t realise I said that out loud until Diana turned to me, "What doesn’t make sense?”

“Oh…” I trailed off, wondering if she wouldn’t perceive me as thinking too highly of myself if I revealed my thoughts to her.

A second later, I concluded that Diana wouldn’t judge me in that manner, so I told her, not just that I suspected that I could be the reason they broke up, but also about what happened on the rooftop when Mason had tried to kiss me.

After I finished, Chloe held her chin, looking like she was deliberating what I just said, while Diana shrugged, “I didn’t expect Mason to be so proactive, but I’m not mad at it. He’s never been one to keep his feelings secret after all, and I’ve always suspected he liked you like that."

I guess I was the one who was blind to it then.

it whilst hoping it wasn’t true, because acknowledging it meant I would have to deal with it, and right now, I wasn’t sure I wanted to think of someone else's feelings for me.

I had far bigger things weighing on my mind; my own thoughts were already enough to consume me.

Chloe took one look at my face, and her eyes softened, “Seems like you knew as well.”

“Yeah,” I admitted with a sigh. “I just thought they would disappear if I pretended to know nothing.”

“Well, now you can’t ignore it anymore,” She responded.

I sighed softly again, then ran a palm over my face. “I don’t even know what I’m supposed to do.”

Diana answered for me, quickly too, “Nothing.”

I glanced at her, and she rephrased her words, “You will do nothing. You didn't ask him to like you, and you certainly didn’t ask them to break up. That’s Mason and Vanessa’s problem to handle.”

“Doesn’t mean I won’t end up getting…”

“You won’t,” She cut in with a firm tone, as though she already had everything planned out.

I glanced at her and chose not to say anything. It would only end up in a play of words that I wasn’t interested in engaging in right now.

Diana wouldn’t really understand; she wasn't the one stuck…

I let that thought go as quickly as it surfaced, then schooled my expression.

This wasn’t the right time to be thinking about that.

A notification pinged again from Diana’s phone, and she glanced down. Her brows raised a second later, “That was fast.”

My heart beat once, and my voice became tinged with suspicion, “What is?”

“Mason. He’s asking if you’re home.”

My chest tightened slightly, and I shared a glance with Chloe as though she could save me. In return, she gave me an encouraging look, then glanced at Diana, “Already?”

“Mm-hmm,” Diana hummed, typing quickly. “I told him yes.”

“Diana…” I started, but she cut me off, lifting her head with a completely unbothered look. “It’s not like I told him to show up…”

I frowned at her, unamused, then sat up straighter, “What if he does show up.”

Diana gave me a look, then answered pointedly, “Then you’ll talk to him. Like a normal human being.”

I opened my mouth to argue, then paused because, realistically, it wasn’t like I could do something else.

I couldn’t avoid him forever; I had learnt that the hard way with Mr Landon.

Another ping reverberated in the room, and Diana’s lips curved slightly. “Well…too late.”

My stomach dropped. “What do you mean, too late?”

“He’s already outside.”
