Chapter 145 The attack IV
Chapter 145 The attack IV
NANCY’S POV
I didn’t think I could get over my excitement.
At that moment, I didn’t think anything could top the emotions that coursed through me when I realised Mr Landon was here. I couldn’t even stop the race of my heart that had begun to beat uncontrollably the moment I heard Hudson verify that he had indeed come for me.
For days, I’d held onto a glimmer of hope that he would, but that hope had fizzled out as the days passed and doubt had begun to creep in.
So many times, I wondered if that would even happen, or if the hope I was holding onto was false. I mean, I’d broken things off with him in a manner that even I deemed cruel, and he hadn’t stopped me, either, or come looking for me to reverse my decision.
I realised the bitter truth that he didn’t care for me as much as I wished and hoped he did,
So when my mind began to hold onto the thought that he would come looking for me, I told myself I was crazy to think so, but still, that thought persevered.
Something made me hold on even though I had no clue what I was holding on for when I didn’t even know if Mr Landon would really come for me. I wasn’t even sure that Nathan would, since I was very aware of the fact that he didn’t have what it would take to go against Mr Landon.
A part of me even hoped he wouldn’t, unless he was backed by Mr Landon, whom I was also scared for.
Now, hearing that I wasn’t wrong made my heart swell with emotions. For a split second, everything else faded-the suffocating walls, Hudson’s presence, the fear that had been clinging to me like a second skin.
He came, and that was all that mattered.
For a long minute, I reveled in the feeling of having my doubts eliminated, but just as quickly as my hope grew, it was tempered by reality.
My eyes alternated back to Hudson quickly, and I realised that he was watching me, and had most probably seen the gleam in my eyes.
However, contrary to the anger or surprise I thought I would see in him, I found that his gaze held a look of anticipation.
That single look jogged my memory, and everything he had told me days ago returned to me.
To him, Mr Landon’s appearance wasn’t unexpected; it was something he’d planned for and hoped would happen. In a split second, I realised that in this room, someone else was happier about Mr Landon’s arrival than I was, and it was him.
My body shook hard, and my hands blindly felt the table, grasping onto the fork I’d let go of earlier. It felt as though I was sinking, and the fork was a lot of wood that could save me from drowning.
If I hadn’t already realized it, it was glaring now that this was a trap that had been modeled for Mr Landon; I was just the bait used to catch him.
My hands tightened harder, and the cold steel of the fork handle dug into my palm.
I was disconcerted for a long while, but as soon as Hudson turned slightly to say something to his man, I realised what I had to do.
It was a moment I had been seeking for days, an opportune window I couldn’t let go of without doing something.
Maybe the reason I even garnered the courage to act was because, Mr Landon was here, but I knew I couldn’t afford to just wait without doing anything.
So, without thinking about the consequences of my action, and focused only on what my hesitation could mean for Mr Landon, I lunged forward with a sudden burst of adrenaline.
It was an unexpected move, and the chair behind me toppled over, screeching loudly as it dragged against the floor, but I barely heard it.
My heart was beating even louder, and all of my focus was on one thing.
Mr Hudson, or more specifically, his throat.
I aimed for the exact spot between his neck and his shoulder, just like I imagined, but at the last moment, I realised that imagination and reality were two very different things because the instant I closed in on him, the man next to him reacted.
His reaction was faster than I expected, and before I could make that stab, his hand shot out, catching my wrist mid-air.
Even faster, I was shoved backwards, and my back hit the table, knocking the air out of my lungs. The impact made the fork slip tightly in my grip, but I didn’t let go.
I clenched my teeth hard and tried again, switching the fork to my other hand.
This time, I hit something, but it wasn’t where I was aiming, although I’d stabbed exactly who I wanted to.
Instead, my fork was lodged deep in Mr Hudson’s shoulder. His reaction time was a little too late, because my fork had sunk into his shoulder for about a minute before he howled.
“Fucking bitch!”
His uninjured arm swung at my face, cracking against my cheek. My teeth hit the inside of my mouth, tearing it open, and the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.
“Stupid whore!” He cursed, grabbing onto his arm, while the other man restrained me and knocked the knife out of my arm.
I moved quickly too, grabbing a jug from the table and swinging it hard behind me. It made contact with his head and broke with a sickening crack. The man grunted, then let go, stumbling backwards.
Before I could revel in my victory, I yanked forward, then spun around quickly.
My back slammed against someone’s chest, and a cry tore from my throat as arms locked around me like steel. It took a second for me to realise it was Hudson.
“Let me go!” I struggled, kicking in an attempt to break free.
Seeing no way out, I moved to bite him but froze when something cold pressed against my neck.
“Move, and you’ll die.”
My breath hitched immediately.
