Chapter 146 - Consequences

Chapter 146 - Consequences
It is noisy. Why are people talking about me in my room?! I open my eyes in exasperation. They are saying that I am... Wait, is Kaiya my name?

I try to sit up, but my body feels heavy and sluggish. I look down and feel relieved that I have legs... Why though? Nothing is making sense. Confused, I look around.

“Kaiya? You’re awake!” a handsome man with black-purple hair says. He hugs me, but I push him away.

“She doesn’t like you anymore,” a handsome red-haired man says this time. He’s smaller than the first one but still exudes strength. “Kaiya, you remember me, right? I am your mate.”

They wait for me to speak and so I ask, “I am Kaiya?”

“Yes, your name is Kaiya,” a woman informs. “The guy with the purplish hair is your lover. The guy with red hair is your mate.”

“How does that work? A mate and a lover?”

The woman named Inanna shrugs her shoulders and adds, “By the way, I am Inanna.”

I try to process what Inanna has just told me. Mate and lover? It feels so foreign to me.

“I...” my voice is hoarse, and I clear my throat. “I don’t remember anything.”

“Well, as the two of you can see. She has forgotten everything, so the two of you, scram!”

When the two leave the room, she informs, “By the way, the new god that shown himself. He mentioned that the Moon Goddess revoked her blessing, so you are no longer the Alpha Queen.” She takes a deep breath. “Right. You won’t understand what I am talking about.”

“Where am I, Inanna?” I ask instead.

“Orttenburg. But now that you are awake, we will travel to Pitchford.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s what we thought you would want once the Moon Goddess freed you.”

I shift my attention to her. It feels so familiar, but I can’t remember anything related to it.

“Besides, there is nothing for you to feel guilty about. Ruth is fine and is currently inseparable from a calm, non-violent Ninus. The war stopped, with lesser casualties than I’d expected. The four kingdoms involved also forged a stronger alliance. More importantly, your family is waiting for you in Pitchford.”

“I have a family?”

“Yes. Werewolves from Weiller’s.”

Another pang in my heart. I know it is something important, but it’s very hard to know because I don’t know the reason.

“I need to remember...” I whisper.

“You better not,” she answers. “Besides, your family will just fill you in with some details for you. As they said, just create new ones.”

I nod, understanding what Inanna is trying to tell me. It’s just that it feels wrong to not remember anything.

“Well then, I need to leave as well. You have three days before we start our journey back to Pitchford,” she informs.

The moon is full tonight, casting an ethereal glow on the trees and making everything look magical. I walk aimlessly, trying to clear my head and make sense of everything.

As promised, after three days, we returned to Pitchford. Theo filled me in on some details about myself during the journey. However, I can’t help but feel like a stranger in my own body. It’s like I’ve been dropped into someone else’s life and I’m trying to figure out how to navigate it.

When we finally arrive at Pitchford, a group of strangers who claimed to be my family greeted me. They all feel so familiar and yet so foreign to me at the same time. They hugged me and tell me stories about myself. There was also this woman named Nowra, who had just arrived in Pitchford. Out of all the people, she’s the person I feel the most at ease. However, it still didn’t jog any type of memories.

“Good evening, Kaiya. Escaping from the noise?”

I look at the owner of the voice and see the king of this Kingdom. Theo. They said he is my lover. However, how can someone like me end up as a lover of a king? And so, I try my best to avoid him, but he keeps on finding ways to talk to me at least once a day. He is even more persistent than that red-haired king in Orttenburg.

“Good evening, my king. I am actually about to retire for the night.”

I am about to move away when he catches my arms. “I should have known, right?”

“Should have known about what?”

“You resist brainwashing easily. You’ve always been good at it. If there is someone to be brainwashed, it will be me.”

I smile nervously. “Sorry, my king. I think I should—”

“I heard about your plans,” he continues. “I heard you plan to travel?”

I nod.

“Kaiya, I still didn’t break our vow,” he whispers. “I still love you.”

“Oh,” I say, embarrassed that a king is professing his love for me. “I don’t think a king should say that to someone who’s not his concubine.”

“Thankfully, I am no longer a King. In effect, I don’t have any concubines anymore.”

“But—”

“I relinquished all of that. It’s become official earlier.”

I stare at him, surprised by what he’s telling me. He is no longer the king? This is surely a joke.

“My king, I don’t understand. How can that be possible?”

“My generals allowed it and besides, I think it’s about time that someone else takes the reins.”

“Oh, sorry to hear that...”

“That’s not it, Kaiya,” he says, smiling. “I am telling you because I hope that you will allow me to become your travel companion.”

I blink at him. “What?”

“I want to be your travel companion, rather than being a king.”

“You give up being a king because you want to be my travel companion?!”

“Yes. Besides, I realize that me, being a King only gives us grief. So, why not give it up altogether and travel with you?”

My mouth opens wide. I thought nothing will surprise me anymore, but this revelation is leaving me speechless.

Seeing my surprise, he moves closer to me. “Kaiya, will you please allow me to become your travel companion?”

“I... ahm, you... I mean, why would you even do that?”

“Because I love you,” he says matter-of-factly. “I’ve loved you ever since I learned how to love. And besides, without you, I don’t think I will ever achieve these things.”

“So, you are giving up all of them instead?”

“Not all. Besides, we also need money to travel, right?” he says, grinning.

“I haven’t agreed to that.”

He chuckles. “I know. That’s why I’m asking for your permission.” Then, in a much softer tone, he adds, “Kaiya, I know we will fight along the way. We will have disagreements. But I promise, it will be an adventure of a lifetime, and we will make memories that will last forever.”

I look at him, still trying to process everything he just said. I never imagined that he would give up things just to be with me. But as I look into his eyes, I can see the sincerity and love in them.

“Okay, let’s do it… If you are okay with someone like me,” I say, smiling. “Let’s travel the world together.”

His face lights up, and he pulls me into a warm embrace. “Thank you, Kaiya!” he exclaims, his eyes shining with excitement. “Where do you want to go first?”
