His Urgency
\[William’s POV\]
I begin to move, heading out of the cell I’m in, and once the door is closed and locked, I move into the main portion of Crystal Fang’s packhouse.
“Tell me!” I push when Jose doesn’t speak. “How did any of this happen?”
“It was an error in judgment.” He responds. “How were we to know that the boy would betray us?”
Opening my mouth, I prepare to cuss him out, to belittle him, to make him feel like the biggest piece of shit for what has happened, but I stop myself because I know that I too am amongst those that he tricked.
“Dammit.” I hiss, my panic growing. “I’ll be back in a few days’ time.”
“Before you do come back, could you do me a favor?” He asks, and I fight the urge to tell him no.
“What is it?”
“I have requested Denali’s presence.” He explains, and I don’t even need to ask what it is that he wants with her. “Would you please escort her here?”
“No fucking chance.”
There was no damn way that I was going to lead Denali straight to her death. I knew damn well if I did and something actually happened, Rosco would try to kill me.
“I don’t know what you think you’re doing, but leave her out of it.” I continue. “She is useless as far as we are concerned, and she needs to stay in Emerald Moon. Better yet, you shouldn’t even tell her about anything that is happening.”
“It’s too late.”
“Of course it is.” I growl, heading to the infirmary so that I can drop off Lydia’s blood with Healer Andrews. “Let me guess, you’ve already told her everything, and like the idiot she is, she has agreed to help?”
“It’s like you can read minds.”
“Too bad you can’t.” I growl, reaching my destination. “Because if you could, you would know what I’m thinking right now.”
Not waiting for a response, I hang up and barge into the infirmary, where Healer Andrews sits going over paperwork.
“Have you retrieved the sample?” He asks as I head toward him. “Hopefully she didn’t give you too hard of a time.”
“She’s Lydia.” I shrug, pulling the syringe out of my pocket. “You should know better than anyone that she won’t do anything easily.”
In the past, I allowed Lydia to stay in Crystal Fang with me because she insisted she had nowhere else to go. I was in the midst of depression because of losing Elise, so I agreed while not really caring what may happen.
Back then, she tormented my people, pretending that she was the luna of Crystal Fang, and when word got back to me, I made her go live in a small cabin beside the place.
Of course, she put up a fight and didn’t want to do it, but in the end I had the ultimate say. Just a few threats and she was quite obedient, but even I knew that she wouldn’t continue to be like that, and now here we were.
“What matters is I got the simple.” I say, passing the syringe to Healer Andrews. “Make sure that you do thorough testing. If the pup comes out to be mine, then I will do the responsible thing and take it under my wing.”
“And if it isn’t?” He asks, giving me a look of fear. “What do you plan on doing?”
“I’ll make that decision when the time comes.” I tell him. “If it isn’t mine, then I’m certain that its father is somewhere out there.”
“Does that mean that you plan to search for the father?” He asks. “I didn’t know that you were that noble.”
“What?” I chuckle, trying not to take offense. “Do I look like some villain who would just throw a kid out to defend itself? I have a bit of conscience.”
“Of course you do.” Healer Andrews chuckles. “That’s the reason we all look up to you.”
“Sure.” I shrug. “I have to get going.”
“So soon?”
“Yes,” I respond, knowing that the sooner I get back to New Moon, the better. “Something has come up, so I must get going.”
“I see.”
It’s all the healer says before nodding with a look of understanding on his face.
“I do pray that the goddess is with you in whatever it is that you must do.” He says. “And that you are victorious.”
“You’re speaking as though I’m going into battle.” I tell him, though in a way, I guess that I was. “Don’t worry. You won’t be rid of me that soon.”
“I have no doubt.”
“I expect results by the time I turn.” I say now, clapping him on the shoulder and then heading toward the room's exit. “If not, you will be thoroughly punished.”
“I assure you that I will have them for you.”
“Great,” I sigh, relieved that there was one less thing for me to worry about. “Then I’m heading out.”
“Now?”
“Yes,” I respond. “I won’t be able to be easy until I do.”
Finished speaking, I head through the packhouse and toward my room. When I arrive, I pack a small duffle bag, and then I head downstairs. When I arrive, I find Miguel, my beta, waiting.
“Sir,” he says, eyeing me. “Are you leaving?”
“I am,” I confirm. “I’ll leave this place to you until I return. It shouldn’t take too long.”
“Understood.” He says, giving a nod. “But are you sure you don’t wish for me to get an army together for you?”
“No,” I respond. “We’ve got enough people for this, and I can’t afford to leave Crystal Fang with little to no protection.”
“Then I will wish you well.” Miguel says, bringing a fist to his heart. “May the goddess be with you.”
“Not you too.” I sigh, rolling my eyes. “It isn’t like I’m going off to my death.”
“No day is guaranteed.” He points out, and I can’t help but agree. “All of us could not wake up tomorrow.”
“No kidding.”
Giving him a nod, I move out and head straight for my car. When I reach it, I throw my bag into the backseat and then rev the engine to life so I can peel out onto the main highway. Once I’m on the road, I let my mind wander to Elise and everybody in New Moon while wondering just how bad things are there.
When I left, things were calm, and nothing new had happened. How was it possible that all hell could break loose in an instant?
‘That’s the way war works.’ Rue tells me. ‘Pandemonium can break out at any time, and it is up to us to bring back the peace that we are craving.’
‘What are you?’ I ask, hating how fucking all-knowing my wolf is sounding. ‘The wise wolf of the north?’
‘Not hardly,’ he chuckles. ‘Who the hell would make a wolf that distinguished for an idiot like you?’
‘Watch it.’ I tell him, pressing the gas so that my body presses into my seat. ‘This idiot may just get us killed.’
‘Are you threatening me?’ He demands.
‘Possibly.’ I admit.
Honestly, I already knew that if things didn’t work out and for some reason Ezekial and his men managed to defeat us. I would happily let myself die, because having to live my miserable existence after finding the slightest bit of hope would be pointless.
“Elise,” I whisper, suddenly wanting to see her. Not the reborn version of her, but the true version of her that I knew and fell in love with. “I miss you. Once all of this is over, I will find a way to save you.”
