Chapter 49: It’s Not the End

Magnus

We walked through the lit hallways of the hospital, my mind was immersed in the urgency of the situation. Miranda, by my side, also felt the tension in the air.

We knew that Richard’s health was hanging by a thread, and our thirst for revenge clouded our judgment for brief moments. I know that tonight I will do something unimaginable, but I don’t intend to back down, even if it costs me my freedom again.

“Magnus, we must do something. We can’t let Richard escape again,” said Miranda. I nodded with a tense jaw.

“He will pay for what he did, I promise.”

My thoughts, for the most part, were directed towards revenge. I couldn’t allow Richard to go unpunished after all he had caused, it’s his fault that I’m in this situation and it’s because of him that I was in prison, I don’t want any of that to repeat.

“Are you with me?”

If I was going to do something so atrocious, I wanted to make sure she was by my side supporting me no matter what.

“Always, you know that.”

“I’m about to commit a crime, you’re aware of that, right?”

“I’m a lawyer, I’ll know how to get you out of this problem.”

Anger felt like something boiling in my blood, it was fueled by the thirst for justice and the desire to protect those I loved, once I got rid of Richard my life next to Miranda would be much easier.

We approached the room where Richard lay sick. Hannah was there, her anxious gaze rose when we entered.

“Magnus, Miranda, thank you for coming so quickly. Richard… seems to be getting worse, the doctors are doing everything they can to help, but I feel like I’m running out of options.”

My gesture was a quick nod. I looked at Richard, unconscious and vulnerable in the hospital bed. But my thoughts oscillated between revenge and resentment.

“I know you must be feeling confused,” Miranda said, “it would be better if you took a break.”

“Actually, we need to talk. There are pending issues that need to be resolved.”

Hannah’s gaze had something different this time, we left the room, leaving Richard behind. Outside, in the hallway, the atmosphere was charged with the tense energy of what was to come.

“Magnus, I’m sorry. I know you want justice, but we need to be careful.”

“What are you talking about, Hannah?”

“It was all a distraction.”

Her words hit me like a bucket of ice water and I approached Richard’s room only to notice that he was no longer there.

“Damn, he managed to escape!”

“I’m sorry, Magnus.”

“What do you think you’ve done, Hannah?”

“Protect my brother.”

The situation was serious, Hannah ended up explaining to us that while we were there in the hospital someone was taking care of stealing important documents from my house and this gave Richard plenty of time to escape.

Together, we decided to act, but what we didn’t know was that Richard, despite his weakness, was still a cunning opponent. The house was steeped in an uncomfortable silence upon returning. Hannah remained calm while Josh stayed in the living room, waiting for us, and the tension cut through the air like a knife.

Miranda and I exchanged glances knowing that we had to put a stop to all this if we wanted to win in court tomorrow, after all this is still my house and I am the only one who will command here.

“Hannah, Josh, we need to talk,” I announced, standing in front of them, “I want you to leave my house.”

“I don’t think we should do this now, Magnus. We can wait for this to pass,” Miranda suggested cautiously.

“We can’t keep avoiding it. You need to leave. This house is not the place for you, and you deserve to live free from this shadow,” I replied, pointing at Josh.

“I don’t know how I allowed a couple of nuisances like this pair to stay with me for so long, but no more, I came out of prison reformed, either you leave my house or I’ll cut your heads off, you decide.”

Seeing that I had made a decision, everyone looked at me a bit worried.

“I’m capable of worse things, please don’t test my patience.”

We headed towards the living room, confronting Josh and Hannah. The tension was palpable, and the faces of both reflected a mix of discomfort and disagreement.

“It’s not personal, but this is no longer working for any of us,” Miranda declared, searching for her voice amidst the conflict.

Hannah frowned, but Josh nodded, perhaps understanding the inevitability of the situation.

“It is personal,” I intervened, “stop making idiot faces and leave once and for all, by tomorrow morning I want your things out of my house.”

Everyone went to do their things and finish packing their bags, as they left I approached Josh, there was a pending issue between us.

“Josh, we need to talk. I know things haven’t been easy for anyone, but it’s time to make decisions. I have the divorce papers here. You sign them tomorrow, or I assure you things will get much worse for you.”

The words resonated in the air, and Josh’s gaze reflected a mix of surprise and resignation. It was the first step to freeing Miranda from any bond with her stormy past, and I was determined to make sure it was so.

Before he could say anything Miranda fell to the floor, she started to feel bad and I don’t know when so much blood appeared, I took control of the situation and took care of getting her to the hospital as quickly as I could.

Her face reflected a mix of pain and concern, and I couldn’t help but feel a knot in my stomach at the possibility that something was wrong with the baby.

“Calm down, Miranda, we’ll be fine. We’re going to get answers,”

I tried to reassure her, although the worries were eating away at me inside. The hospital staff acted quickly when they saw Miranda, taking her to an emergency room while I anxiously waited in the waiting room.

Every minute felt like an eternity, and my mind was filled with dark thoughts about what could be happening.

Finally, a doctor approached with a serious expression. My heart was pounding as I awaited his words.

“The baby is fine, but it seems that Miranda is experiencing complications. We need to keep her under observation and run more tests to fully understand the situation,” the doctor explained, and a sigh of relief escaped my lips.

I rushed to the room where Miranda was, her expression was one of exhaustion and worry. I took her hand, trying to convey strength with my touch.

“Magnus, I’m scared. I can’t lose this baby, it’s all I have now,” she murmured.

“We’re not going to lose it, Miranda. We’ll be here for each other, we’ll get through this together. You’re strong, and I won’t let anything bad happen to you.”

I spent the night next to Miranda in the hospital, waiting and praying for her and the baby’s health. Now I fear losing them both.
