Chapter 50: When I Was Young, I Saw You
Chapter 50: When I Was Young, I Saw You
The look on Sophia's face, Sebastian and Shawn both took in, especially Shawn , who narrowed his eyes as he re-examined her.
"Officer Sophia, you said earlier that you had heard of him, you just didn't get a chance to meet him at the time, I'd like to ask, when did you get the chance to be able to meet Thomas?" Shawn had taken on the exact tone of a suspect being interrogated.
Sophia froze and began to play dumb, "Did I? Did I say that?"
"Yes, you did." Shawn didn't allow her to question it.
Sophia waved her hand in disbelief, "I guess I said it wrong in the heat of the moment."
"In the heat of the moment? Well then, let me ask you, why did you react so badly?" Shawn didn't panic in the slightest, grabbing her by a point and not letting go.
Sophia suddenly felt that trying to deceive her colleague and muddle through was a foolish act.
Sophia composed herself, "Don't take that tone of voice when you ask me, and I'm not hiding anything from you, the only reason I know about Thomas is because of a connection to a case I was in charge of before."
"Which case?" Sebastian asked next.
Sophia answered him, "Just the case that was just closed two days ago, the body that was buried under the ground by a mudslide for more than thirty years, and on my way to investigate, I found out about a man named William, and Thomas is related to this William."
"William?" Shawn asked as he flipped through the information and realised that in the entire file, there was no mention of the name William, "What is this William?"
"He died over thirty years ago, anyway, the only reason I know about this Thomas is because he was socialising with this William, that's why the reaction was so great when I heard the name just now." Sophia basically counts as a confession, except, of course, for hiding the crossing over thing.
After all, that was outrageous to say and hard to believe.
Shawn stated that he understood and didn't hold onto the point any longer as he said to Sophia, "This Thomas is hiding out in Canada, I heard he died some years ago but I've heard whispers of him again recently, so I'm afraid the news of the death is false."
Shawn paused as he said that and looked up at her and said, "Which means that the reason the outlaws are on to you is that someone is buying your life."
The words "bought your life" hit her like a bolt from the blue, and they lingered in Sophia's mind.
Sophia was in shock, someone had bought her life, who was this person? And why would they want to kill her? Could it be, to stop her, to keep her from saving William?
The thought just popped into her head and Sophia woke up like a dream!
So that's why she was attacked one after another!
But then again, who was trying to stop her? And how did they know about her crossing over?
Sophia couldn't figure it out, the clues she had now were too few.
To make a further breakthrough, we have to start with this Thomas, thinking of this, Sophia said to Shawn, "Since someone wants to buy my life, let me be the bait."
"What do you mean by that?" Shawn frowned.
Sophia explained, "The outlaws took the money, so as long as they are on the run, they won't let up on the chance to kill me."
Sophia briefly told them about her plan, trying to get the police to stop chasing them for a while and let their guard down.
And that's when she purposely appeared in their neighbourhood to make them come to her door of their own accord.
"It's the only way to lure them out, so let me give it a try."
As Sophia had said, it was the best thing to do at the moment, but Shawn was still a little embarrassed, "This is a non-trivial decision, you're special, we'll have to talk about it."
"What's so special about it? Isn't it more important for the Chief's daughter to set an example? On my dad's side, I'll talk to him." Sophia knew what they were worried about, and it was the last thing she wanted.
In the end, Shawn said he'd go back to the station and check in with the leadership, pending the outcome of their deliberations.
Sophia knew that they would have to waste another two days discussing it, but she couldn't stop them, so she had to agree.
After going back in the evening, Sophia told her parents about this matter, before dad said anything, mum stood up excitedly and denied, "No, absolutely not! I will never agree!"
Dad was very calm, he lit a cigarette, after taking a drag, he asked mum to go in first, he wanted to talk to his daughter.
Before mum left, she repeatedly told him that he should never let his daughter go!
It was only when mum went inside that dad pressed the cigarette down on the ashtray and put it out, changing his usual smiling face to a deep and serious expression at the moment.
Sophia lowered her voice and said to him, "Dad, just now, my mum was not at liberty to say that I became this bait not in a fit of passion, nor for any fame, but because, someone hired them, to take this life of mine."
"Could it be, really, that a father's debt is paid by his son?" Dad suddenly said this.
Sophia was puzzled, "What do you mean?"
Dad slowly said, "Thomas, I know him."
Sophia was surprised, her dad knew Thomas too?
Dad said in a deep voice, "When I was young, I had dealings with him, and it can also be said that we have a grudge, so just now when I heard you say that, I suspected that he was trying to get back at me."
This was out of Sophia's expectation, I didn't expect there to be this kind of unexpected discovery.
Sophia suddenly thought of something and asked him busily, "Dad, do you know William then?"
Dad nodded, "Know."
"Then when I asked you before, you still said you didn't know anything!" Sophia immediately accuses.
Dad, however, said, "You asked before about James, you didn't say William."
"What difference does it make?" Sophia now seriously suspects that her dad is deliberately hiding it from her!
Instead, Dad said in a serious voice, "Of course there's a difference, the names are different."
Sophia: "......"
"Okay, not going to beat around the bush with you." Dad was mindful of proportion and moderation as he said to Sophia, "That was more than thirty years ago, and I was just a young cop then, just turned twenty, young and green-"
"Dad, get to the point." Sophia interrupted him just in time.
Dad nodded, "Okay, get to the point." Then, stared at her intently.
"Dad, what are you looking at me for?" Sophia was uncomfortable, his eyes were weird.
But soon, Sophia knew why he was looking at her with that look because, in the next sentence, Dad said, "I saw you when I was young."
Sophia instantly looked like she had been struck by lightning, her whole body was petrified, her dad had seen her before?
Then doesn't that mean, when she crosses over after that, she will still see her dad? Sophia suddenly has a good mysterious feeling, this is even more bizarre than meeting William!
