Chapter 75 Envy
Chapter Seventy-Six
Aria inhaled sharply at those words, her eyes coming up sharply to meet Lucian’s.
Lucian’s jaw clenched with anger as he glared at Zach through the rearview mirror.
Zach had gone still as soon as he’d realized what he just said. He bit his lips in regret, steadfastly refusing to meet Lucian’s eyes.
After a while, he slowly raised his head and his eyes met that of Lucian’s in the rearview mirror.
“I am sorry.” Zach’s eyes said.
“What is he talking about? What do you mean Elara Vaughn’s death?” Aria asked looking from one man to the other, her eyes filled with confusion, “Why did you ask Zach to get information on Elara Vaughn’s death?”
Lucian was silent for a long time, until finally he said, “Do not worry yourself about that, Aria. I am sure Zach made a mistake..”
As he spoke, he glared pointedly at Zach through the rearview mirror, making hints with his eyes.
Zack was the one who got himself into the trouble, he should be the one to get himself out.
Zach immediately realized what Lucian was telling him. Since he had foolishly blurted out what should be kept a secret between him and Lucian, it was his duty to get himself out of the predicament.
“Well…uhhh…I’m sure you heard wrong, Aria.” He uttered, trying to lighten the mood with a nervous laugh, “Why would I want to get information on Elara Vaughn?”
Aria narrowed her eyes at them, finding their behavior highly suspicious.
“I am not deaf, Zach. You definitely said Lucian asked you to get information on Elara Vaughn.” Aria uttered refusing to believe that Zach had made a mere mistake, “Now, I want to know what that information is about. What is going on? Come on, somebody tell me!”
She wanted to know why Lucian was snooping around in Elara Vaughn’s business.
Did he know anything?
Even if he knew anything, what was his plans concerning the matter?
If there was something he knew, Aria wanted to definitely get in on it. It would make things so much faster.
Lucian was from the Graves family, the most powerful family in all of Crestmont.
She had been working all this while, warming her way into the hearts of the Graves family members so she will be able to use their resources to carry out her revenge, but what if she had someone as capable as Lucian backing her?
Aria knew that Kurt Eugene and Vera Hale were the ones who had killed her and her parents , but there was no way to prove that.
She had no evidence and she could not very well tell the jury that she was Elara Vaughn’s soul living in Aria Beaumont‘s body, and that’s how she knew Kurt Eugene and Vera Hale had killed her.
The Jury would think she was crazy.
Lucian was her only hope now, but what if he asked why she was so eager about Elara Vaughn’s business?
She looked at him, biting her lips in uncertainty.
Would Lucian believe her if she said she was Elara Vaughn? And that she had found herself in Aria Beaumont’s body, the next moment after she was killed?
However, Lucian sighed the next minute and turned to her, “It’s nothing serious, Aria,” he uttered, taking both of her hands in his, “I only asked Zach to inquire around about Elara’s funeral arrangements. That’s all.”
As he spoke, he glanced at Zach to back him up. Zach immediately nodded, attesting to Lucian’s story.
“Yes, that’s right.” He said, “Even though they were not really close and were practically at each other’s necks while she was alive, it would seem disrespectful if he did not pay her respects after her death," he laughed nervously, “That’s all it was.”
He glanced at Lucian, who still had a cold glare.
He immediately faced his front and signaled to the driver to start the car.
“Stop.” Lucian ordered, then faced Zach, "You go out.”
Without a word, Zach nodded and stepped out of the car. He quietly closed the door and bowed before Lucian as the car pulled away.
He was not resentful in anyway, but was literally wishing he could kick himself.
“Oh, you and your big mouth!” He moaned, slapping himself on the mouth, sighing in despair, “Why did you have to go and blurt that out in front of her?”
He sighed, looking at the car which was quickly disappearing out of sight.
“Well, I’m glad we were able to cover it up,” he muttered. He would have to set out some other time where he can report to Lucian on his findings.
“Surely, Aria does not suspect a thing. Right?” He muttered too on himself, his eyebrows drawn in worry.
Having Aria Beaumont involved in this case would be too much of a headache, and Zach was not sure if she had been fooled by their little charade in the car earlier.
He would not know.
He could only hope.
Aria Beaumont was as scary as her husband, and even more of an enigma, and somehow, Zach knew she could not be fooled so easily.
As Zach walked off, he found himself thinking about Aria Beaumont more and more. He could not help but think she was so similar to Elara Vaughn.
Meanwhile, Lucian and Aria drove off to the Graves family estate. While Lucian stayed back in the courtyard to receive a call, Aria had the driver take her things into the house.
There were a lot of them.
Lucian, deciding that just three outfits were not enough for his wife who was resuming office, had ordered for a lot more clothes.
Not just clothes, but shoes, jewelry and other accessories as well.
The entire family was in the living room, and when Monica saw the amount of shopping bags that was being hauled in, her eyes curved into dark slits filled with jealousy.
“Aria, did you have to make it so obvious that you married into the Graves family for money?”she uttered, green with envy, “This behavior is not very becoming for a new wife. Are you trying to make the family go bankrupt?”
