Chapter 121 How Wrong!
Chapter One Hundred And Twenty
Vaughn Capital Group - Vaughn Empire
Kurt Eugene sat in the Vaughn Empire boardroom, fidgeting every three seconds. He tried his best to look composed as always, but he was sweating in the well conditioned board room.
His favorite tie was too tight that morning and he tugged at it repeatedly while he waited.
Through his lashes, he surreptitiously watched the shareholders who sat before him.
The silence in the boardroom stretched in as all twenty-four of the major shareholders of the Vaughn Capital Group stared back at him, their gazes hard and expressions hostile.
There were no polite nods from them nor was there any small side talk. Just extreme silence and a stack of papers, printed reports waiting like evidence.
Were they trying to smother him with the silence?
Well whatever it is they are trying to do, it’s working. He was about to shit his pants here just from their staring.
After making him sweat, Executive Director Evans finally cleared his throat.
“Let’s get this over with,” he said, his cold voice slicing through the silence in the room like knife through butter. He slid a file across the table, “Kurt Eugene, You lost the Nexus Logistics acquisition.”
The look he gave Kurt was enough to freeze the Nile over. His lips was downturned with disgust as he eyed the latter.
He had never liked Kurt Eugene and like every other person in the company, he thought he was not fit for his God daughter Elara Vaughn.
But Elara had been so infatuated with the fool, giving him so many opportunities that was definitely not supposed to be.
That only showed how incompetent Kurt Eugene was.
Everyone who was close to the Vaughn family, like himself, had tried to talk her out of her relationship with Kurt Eugene.
But Elara had been adamant about her love for Kurt Eugene, until everyone was forced to be convinced their love and believe in her good reasoning.
What was even more frustrating was the way Kurt Eugene carried himself like he was the world’s greatest wonder, whereas he was nothing without Elara.
His arrogance and pompous attitude was just too disgusting to anyone who came across him.
Everyone but Elara Vaughn.
It was a sad sight really.
A striking and extremely brilliant heiress like Elara Vaughn, always running after and cozying up to a degenerate like Kurt Eugene.
But as fate would have it, Lera had died off just like that, along with her parents. She had been so infatuated with this fool that she’d actually given him her shares in the Empire.
However, due to the fact that Elara’s parents had owned the controlling block, and some of the shares had been locked via governance rules, Kurt Eugene could not come fully into it.
Besides, the transfer of shares of the Chairman must be approved by majority of the independent Directors.
Executive Director Evans was extremely grateful for that little fact. At least, he knew his god daughter’s legacy would not go to waste just like that.
Now, all they had to do was look for a way to throw this little fool out.
But Executive Director Evans was sure Kurt would not be getting away so easily this time.
At that question, Kurt flinched but only slightly.
He kept his tone calm, “Competitive outcomes happen—”
Executive Director Alex snickered in disbelief, his dark eyes giving Kurt a flaming look, “Oh is that so?” He asked in a mocking tone.
Kurt cleared his throat nervously once more, then frowned darkly, aware that they were trying to make him falter.
He knew that they’d always hated him and today was no exception. He could feel their stares on him, like a pack of wolves out for blood.
They were going to look for every possible ways to bring him down, and he would not let them get their way.
“That’s exactly what it is, Director Alex,” he managed to answer with a tight little smile, “It was just a competitive outcome that happened, like not an unusual occurrence in situations like this.”
The Directors broke out in a murmur, some appalled and flabbergasted by Kurt’s audacity and confidence.
“Well then, how about you explain this?”, Executive Director Evans continued as he flung another file down hard on the table, “You exposed us to patent litigation. Are you out of your freaking mind?!”
Kurt stiffened, swallowing hard. It was as though all his sins was catching up with him at that moment, “Come on now, Director Evans,” he muttered, trying his best to lighten the mood with a nervous laugh, “The technology overlap is minor, as we can all see.”
“Minor?!”
“Is he serious?!”
“Oh my god! Why are we sitting down here listening to him?!”
“He’s going to ruin the Vaughn capital group sooner or later! How freaking dare he?!”
Kurt swallows hard once more as he heard those statements from the rests of the board members. He looked around at them, his fingers digging into the armrests of his chair.
A woman at the far end leaned forward, her voice sharp and disdainful, “Look here, Kurt Eugene or whatever you call yourself.” She shook the file in front of her aggressively,”You say it’s minor but it’s so identical. And their filing predates ours by seven months!”
“We look like freaking thieves!” Another Director uttered, slamming his hands on the mahogany table before him, “How preposterous!”
There were murmurs of agreement from the rest of the board members. They all looked at Kurt with hostility and he yanked at his tie again, feeling like he was going to throw up if he did not get out of there soon.
He needed fresh air.
He was suffocating here, dammit!
Elara had been the one who handled the board matters when she was alive. He only had to tag along beside her and give one or two inputs as directed as Elara.
That way, he had his moment and he was able to shine when needed.
But now, facing the hostile stares from the directors, he could not help but wonder how Elara had been able to deal with them in her lifetime.
Well, there was also the fact that she did not in any way do anything wrong when she was alive.
All her projects had gone through, she had racked up revenue company and was respected through out the company.
He had thought it would be so easy to take over when she died. He had thought he’d watched her every move and he knew exactly how he was going to take her place.
How wrong he was!
