Chapter 136
Chapter 136
FIRE DAWN PACK
Bothered and unsettled with a lot of unanswered questions, Steve paced in his room, restlessly. He couldn't get his mind off the fact that Veronica was no longer in their pack and what made matters worse was the fact that he couldn't do anything to help her because of his father's threat.
He still found it appalling that Megan was the one who made matters more complicated, eventually leading to Veronica’s unfortunate and untimely exile.
The memories of that day at the palace flashed through his mind like a slideshow, and he couldn't just get his mind off it.
He also couldn't get Veronica’s frantic screams as she was dragged out of the palace, out of his head, and he was so mad at himself that he could only watch helplessly, without being able to lend a helping hand.
He took a seat, staring at his phone, and another smaller device in his hand, as he tapped his foot on the ground, anxiously.
An idea suddenly popped up in his mind, and he suddenly got up, slipped the device and his phone into his pockets, grabbed his car keys in a hurry and immediately headed to Megan's house.
After a long drive, he finally got there, but as he was about to drive into their compound, he met Megan's dad, who was about to be on his way out.
Steve halted his car and greeted him. “Hello, Councillor Maxwell.”
“How are you, Steve?” Councillor Maxwell asked, winding down his car's window.
“Very well, thank you.” Steve replied with a slight smile.
“You're here to see Megan, right?” Councillor Maxwell asked further.
“Yes. Is she in?” Steve asked, because he intentionally didn't call her before coming.
“Oh, yes. Go in. She is in her room.” He said to Steve, who nodded. “I have a meeting to attend. I'll be back later in the day.” He added and Steve nodded again in understanding.
They bade each other goodbye, and Steve drove in, while Megan's father drove out.
As he approached Megan's room, he noticed her door was almost halfway closed, making it easier for him to hear the conversation she was having with someone on the phone.
He stretched his arm, and was about to knock when he heard Megan say something shocking.
“Of course. I'm all healed now, and I'm very happy now. At least she has been banished. You needed to see the look on her face as she was being dragged away.” Megan said, her voice filled with joy as she spoke.
“You also needed to hear the way she was screaming for help and asking me to tell them the truth.” She mimicked Veronica’s desperate pleas, and burst into a mocking laughter.
Hearing what Megan had just said, Steve immediately withdrew his arm, holding his breath, as a mix of shock and curiosity kept him stuck in one spot, in front of her door.
Thinking he had heard the worst, Steve was thrown into further shock when he heard her speak further.
“I didn't know that the plan with Trey was going to lead to his death. I only had an agreement with him to take advantage of her, so that Steve would begin to avoid her. I didn't know how she got so powerful to the extent of pushing him away and he ended up dying. I'm so sorry for him.”
Steve's hand flew to his mouth. He couldn't believe his ears. He felt devastated. He couldn't believe how evil Megan had become, planning and scheming with a stranger to ruin someone else's life. If anyone had told him that she could ever go to such lengths just to get rid of Veronica, he would never have believed.
He really wanted to barge in on her and do something crazy, but at the same time, he knew he had to be patient at that moment to hear every single detail she was spewing since he already had plans in mind.
So, he remained as quiet as he could, as he listened on.
“You're actually lucky that you're not a member of this pack. No one will suspect you.” Megan said, and paused to listen to what the person had to say.
“You know, I must really thank you for the advice. You were actually right. Tampering with the car's brakes really worked like magic. You're so good at what you do though. I can't believe how smart and accurate you worked.”
“For a moment, as we left the ice cream shop, I was beginning to have doubts that you did anything to the car. Though I drove really slowly just as you instructed, because you said the brakes won't be able to stop the car when we are at top speed. But as soon as I could get her to drive, I kept pushing for her to speed up, and she gullibly fell for it.” She snickered.
She scoffed. “That girl is such a fool. She trusts too blindly, but I'm not complaining though, because it worked exactly the way we wanted it to.”
“Honestly, I'm so happy that our plan B fell in place after plan A with Trey failed woefully.” She said, and paused to think.
“You know, thinking about it now. I think that girl is really a witch, or she possesses some sort of black magic or something. Because tell me how she was the driver of the car and technically she was the one who was supposed to get hurt, but I was the one who ended up getting injured, with a broken arm, a lot of scars to show for it, while she came out of that car unscathed.”
There was a pause in their conversation again.
“Exactly. There's absolutely nothing anyone can tell me. She is definitely a witch or a sorceress.”
She paused again for a short while, and then continued speaking again.
“Suspect me? Yeah, no one suspects me at all. You know I had to even trick Steve that day. I had to take him on a walk so he wouldn't witness it, talk less of helping her and fighting with Trey.” She told the person at the other end of the call.
Steve's eyes widened as he recalled that Megan really wanted him to go on a walk with her out of the blue on the day the incident with Trey happened at Veronica’s house.
She continued. “So, you see why I doubt if anyone will ever suspect me, especially since I wasn't there when it happened. After all, we were ‘friends’.” She laughed mockingly again.
“Also, the said girl has been banished from the pack, and I can't explain how happy I am about it. Now, Steve will see ME and ME ALONE.” Megan squealed happily.
“Hold on. We've been talking for a while now, and I really need to grab a drink right now.” She said, and Steve could hear her getting up from the bed and approaching the door.
And as she got to the door, and opened it, she was shocked to see him standing at the door, with a completely blank expression on his face.
Shocked to see him there, her phone slipped from her hand, and fell to the ground, as her hands began to tremble.
