The Cost of Power

Pain exploded through Caleb's chest. One second he was standing between Tobias and Lucian, the next he was on the ground gasping for air.

"Caleb!" Tobias dropped to his knees beside him. "What's happening?"

Caleb couldn't answer. His lungs felt like they were being crushed. The blue light that had protected them against Victor now flickered beneath his skin like dying fireflies. Each pulse sent fresh waves of agony through his body.

"We need a healer!" Lucian shouted, cradling Caleb's head.

Caleb tried to speak, but blood bubbled from his lips instead. His vision blurred, faces swimming above him. He could feel the mate bond stretching like a rubber band pulled too tight, ready to snap.

"Stay with us," Tobias begged, gripping Caleb's hand so hard it hurt. "Please, don't leave us."

Darkness crept in from the edges of Caleb's sight. As his eyes fluttered closed, a woman's scream cut through the air.

"CALEB!"

The voice wasn't close, but it rang in his head like a bell. Someone he hadn't heard in years. Someone he thought was gone forever.

Aurora.

Miles away, Aurora Riverstone fell to her knees, clutching her chest.

"What's wrong?" her friend Mira asked, rushing to her side.

"It's Caleb," Aurora gasped. "He's dying."

The twin bond between them, dormant for so long, now burned like a live wire. She could feel her brother's pain as if it were her own.

"I have to find him," Aurora said, struggling to stand. "He needs me."

Mira grabbed her arm. "You don't even know where he is!"

"Yes, I do." Aurora closed her eyes, focusing on the bond that had connected her to Caleb since birth. "I can feel him. He's with the Vale brothers."

"The Alphas of Crimson Fang?" Mira's eyes widened. "Aurora, that's crazy. You can't just walk into another pack's territory!"

"Watch me." Aurora grabbed her emergency pack and headed for the door. "My brother is all I have left. I won't lose him too."

When Caleb opened his eyes again, he was lying in a bed inside Lucian's private cabin. His body felt heavy, like his bones had turned to lead. Every breath was a struggle.

Tobias sat beside him, dark circles under his eyes. When he noticed Caleb was awake, his face lit up with relief.

"Thank the moon," he whispered, leaning forward to press his forehead against Caleb's. "We thought we'd lost you."

"What... happened?" Caleb's voice was barely heard.

"You collapsed after the battle," Lucian said, entering the room with Isabel behind him. "Your heart stopped twice."

Fear gripped Caleb's chest. "How long was I out?"

"Almost twenty-four hours," Isabel replied, moving to check his pulse. "You're lucky to be alive."

"It was the power," Caleb said, remembering the blue light coursing through him. "It was too much."

Isabel nodded grimly. "That's why I'm here. We need to talk about what happened."

She sat on the edge of the bed, her face serious. "What you did against Victor—channeling your power through the mate bond—it nearly killed you."

"But it worked," Caleb protested weakly. "We drove him away."

"At what cost?" Isabel gestured to his trembling hands. "Look at yourself, Caleb. Your body is shutting down."

Lucian crossed his arms. "What are you saying, Isabel?"

"I'm saying there's a reason Bondspeakers are rare," she replied. "Their abilities exact a physical toll. The more they use their powers, the more their life force drains."

The words hung heavy in the air. Caleb looked at his mates, seeing the fear in their eyes.

"So if I use my power against Victor again..." Caleb started.

"It could kill you," Isabel finished.

"Then we find another way," Tobias said firmly. "We'll face Victor without magic if we have to."

Isabel shook her head. "You don't understand. Victor drank the blood of the original shadow wolves. He's more powerful than ever."

"And he's preparing for the ritual," a new voice added.

They all turned to see Reid standing in the doorway with a young woman. Her face was gaunt, her eyes haunted.

"This is Emma," Reid said. "She was one of the hostages we rescued from Victor's camp."

Emma stepped forward, her hands shaking. "Victor has been planning this for years. The ritual isn't just about control—it's about transformation."

"What kind of transformation?" Lucian asked.

"He wants to become something new," Emma explained. "Not just an Alpha, but something he calls the Shadow King—a being who can command all wolves, regardless of pack boundaries."

Caleb struggled to sit up, ignoring the pain shooting through his chest. "That's what my mother warned me about in the vision. If Victor completes the ritual, no one will be safe."

A commotion outside interrupted them. Shouts and growls echoed through the camp.

"Now what?" Tobias groaned, heading for the door.

He returned moments later, his face pale. "Caleb, there's someone here for you. She says she's your sister."

Caleb's heart skipped a beat. "Aurora? That's impossible. I haven't seen her in years."

But even as he said it, he remembered the voice he'd heard when he collapsed—the scream that had called his name.

The door burst open, and a young woman with stormy gray eyes—identical to Caleb's—rushed in. Her hair was wild, her clothes torn from running through the forest.

"Aurora," Caleb whispered.

She ran to him, tears streaming down her face. "I felt you dying," she sobbed, grabbing his hand. "I thought I was too late."

Lucian and Tobias exchanged confused glances.

"You never told us you had a sister," Lucian said, his voice tight with suspicion.

"A twin sister," Aurora corrected, not taking her eyes off Caleb. "We were separated when Victor took over our pack. I thought he'd killed you."

"And I thought you were dead," Caleb replied, squeezing her hand. The twin bond between them hummed with recognition, filling some empty part of him he hadn't realized was missing.

Aurora turned to the Vale brothers. "Victor is coming. He sent scouts to find me, knowing I'd lead them straight to Caleb."

"You were followed?" Tobias growled.

"No," Aurora said firmly. "I made sure of it. But he knows about the twin bond. He knows I can find Caleb anywhere."

"That's why he kept you separated," Isabel realized. "Twin Bondspeakers are even more powerful than singles."

Caleb's mind raced. "Aurora, do you have the same abilities as me?"

She nodded slowly. "Mother trained me in secret, before Victor killed her."

"She's not dead," Caleb blurted out. "I saw her in a vision. She showed me how to use my powers."

Aurora's eyes widened. "That's impossible. I watched her die."

Before Caleb could respond, a howl of warning cut through the air.

Lucian rushed to the window. "Council wolves," he reported. "They've surrounded the entire camp."

"And they still have our father," Tobias added grimly.

Aurora grabbed Caleb's arm. "We need to go. Now. There's something you need to see."

"He can barely stand," Tobias protested.

"I can help with that," Aurora said. She placed her hand over Caleb's heart. A soft blue light—the same color that had surrounded Caleb during the battle—flowed from her fingers into his chest.

Immediately, Caleb felt stronger. The pain receded, and he could breathe more easily.

"How did you do that?" he asked in amazement.

"Mother taught me how to share life force," Aurora explained. "It's temporary, but it will help you move."

"Where are we going?" Lucian demanded.

"To the sacred pools," Aurora said. "Mother left something there for us. Something that could stop Victor without killing Caleb."

Hope flickered in Caleb's chest. Maybe there was a way to defeat Victor without sacrificing himself after all.

With Tobias and Lucian's help, Caleb got to his feet. His legs were shaky, but he could stand.

"The Council wolves will see us leave," Lucian warned.

"Let me handle that," Aurora said with a confident smile. She closed her eyes, and the blue light spread around her. "They won't see anything I don't want them to see."

Together, they slipped out the back of the cabin, invisible to the Council wolves watching the camp.

As they made their way into the forest, Caleb felt a strange tug in his chest—not pain this time, but something else. A warning.

He stopped suddenly, causing Tobias to bump into him.

"What's wrong?" Tobias asked.

Caleb turned to Aurora, a chill running down his spine. "Twin Bondspeakers can share life force," he said slowly. "But they can also take it."

Aurora's smile changed, becoming cold and unfamiliar. "Smart brother. Mother would be proud."

"Aurora?" Caleb whispered, backing away. "What did Victor do to you?"

"Victor?" Aurora laughed, a hollow sound that echoed through the trees. "Victor is just a tool, brother. Just like you."

Her eyes flashed black—the same darkness that had filled Victor's eyes after he drank the blood.

"You're not Aurora," Caleb realized with horror. "Who are you?"

Not-Aurora smiled wider, showing teeth that were suddenly too sharp.

"I'm the reason our mother created Bondspeakers in the first place," she said in a voice that was no longer Aurora's. "And you, dear brother, are the final sacrifice I need."

She lunged for Caleb's throat.
