First Confrontation

The ghost wolf lunged at Tobias's throat. He ducked just in time, feeling its teeth snap where his neck had been a second before.

"There's too many!" Reid shouted, fighting back-to-back with Tobias as Victor's elite guards surrounded them.

They had been running for hours, leading Victor's wolves away from Caleb and the freed inmates. Now, trapped in a small valley with steep cliffs on either side, they had nowhere left to run.

Tobias knocked another dog back but knew they couldn't hold out much longer. His muscles burned with tiredness, and blood dripped from a deep gash in his shoulder.

"We did what we came to do," Tobias called to his small group of attackers. "We gave Caleb and the others time to escape!"

Even as he said it, doubt gnawed at him. Had Caleb made it to safety? The last time Tobias had seen him, Caleb had been pale with tiredness, drained from breaking Victor's blood magic.

A slow clapping sound echoed through the valley. The shadow dogs parted, making way for Victor to walk through.

"How noble," Victor mocked. "Sacrificing yourselves for my nephew."

"He's not yours," Tobias growled, standing his ground despite the fear churning in his gut.

Victor's face darkened. "The boy belongs to me by blood. His power is my birthright."

"You don't deserve him," Reid spat, blood running down his face from a cut above his eye.

Victor raised an eyebrow. "And you think you do? The precious Vale brothers, sharing a mate like he's a toy between you."

Tobias lunged forward in rage, but two shadow wolves blocked his path, pushing him back.

"Where is he hiding?" Victor asked. "Tell me now, and I might let your warriors live."

"Never," Tobias said through gritted teeth.

Victor sighed loudly. "Then we'll have to do this the hard way." He turned to his wolves. "Kill them all—except this one." He pointed at Tobias. "I want him alive as bait for my nephew."

The shadow wolves stiffened, ready to attack. Tobias braced himself for their charge, knowing they wouldn't survive. But he would die before betraying Caleb.

Just as the wolves sprang forward, a thunderous howl split the air. All heads turned to the hill above.

Lucian stood there, majestic and dangerous, with at least thirty wolves behind him.

Hope surged through Tobias's chest. "Lucian," he whispered.

"Kill them!" Victor screamed, but it was too late.

Lucian and his warriors poured down the cliff wall, attacking Victor's forces from above. In the chaos, Tobias spotted a familiar figure moving among the fighters—Caleb, pale but determined, his eyes locked on Victor.

"No!" Tobias shouted. "He's too weak!"

Ignoring Tobias's warning, Caleb made his way through the fight, dodging claws and teeth. By the time Tobias fought his way to Caleb's side, Lucian had joined them.

For the first time, all three mates stood together facing Victor.

"Well," Victor said, his voice dangerously cool. "The whole family's here."

"It's over, Victor," Lucian said. "Your hostages are free. Your shadow wolves are outnumbered."

Victor laughed, a frightening sound that made the hair on Tobias's neck stand up. "You think numbers matter? I have power you can't imagine."

"We're not afraid of you," Caleb said, though Tobias could feel him shaking.

"You should be," Victor hissed. Then he looked at Tobias and Lucian. "And so should your mates."

Before any of them could respond, Victor pulled a small vial from his pocket. The liquid inside glowed an angry red.

"Blood magic," Caleb whispered, fear in his voice.

Victor smiled. "Not just any blood. This comes from the original shadow wolves—the ones I created when I first took power."

He uncorked the vial and raised it to his lips.

"Stop him!" Lucian shouted, but they were too late.

Victor drank the blood in one gulp. For a moment, nothing happened. Then he doubled over in pain, a terrible scream tearing from his throat.

Shadow marks spread across his skin like living things, crawling up his neck and face. When he straightened, his eyes had turned totally black.

"Run," Caleb urged his friends. "This is bad. Really bad."

But there was nowhere to run. Victor lifted his hands, and dark energy crackled between his fingers.

"I offered you mercy, nephew," Victor said, his voice deeper and twisted. "Now you'll watch your mates die before I take what's mine."

He thrust his hands forward. A wave of tainted energy shot toward them, too fast to dodge.

Tobias immediately moved in front of Caleb, ready to take the hit. Beside him, Lucian did the same.

"No!" Caleb yelled, pushing between them.

Time seemed to slow as Caleb faced the approaching darkness. Tobias watched in fear, certain they were about to lose him.

But instead of hitting Caleb, the dark energy hit an invisible wall a foot in front of him. The rot spread out like water hitting glass, unable to pass through.

Caleb stood with his hands spread, his entire body glowing with soft blue light. His eyes, usually angry gray, now shone with the same blue energy.

"What's happening?" Tobias whispered to Lucian.

"I don't know," Lucian answered, equally stunned.

Victor roared in anger, putting more power into his attack. The dark energy pushed against Caleb's shield, making him stagger back a step.

"I can't hold it much longer," Caleb gasped, sweat breaking out on his forehead.

Without thinking, Tobias grabbed Caleb's left hand. Lucian took his right. The moment they touched, Tobias felt a jolt like lightning running through him.

Suddenly, he could feel Caleb's exhaustion, his drive, his fear—as if they shared one mind. Beside them, Lucian's eyes opened, showing he felt it too.

"The mate bond," Lucian breathed. "He's channeling through it."

Strength flowed from Tobias into Caleb, then from Lucian, forming a circuit of power between the three of them. The blue light surrounding Caleb grew brighter, spreading to cover Tobias and Lucian as well.

Caleb's shield grew outward, pushing back against Victor's dark energy.

"Impossible," Victor growled, his face twisted with rage.

Around them, the fighting had stopped. Both packs watched in awe as the three mates glowed with shared power.

Caleb stepped forward, the shield moving with him. "This is what you'll never understand, Victor. True power comes from connection, not control."

Victor's attack failed. For the first time, Tobias saw fear in his black eyes.

With a final push, Caleb sent a pulse of energy through the wall. Victor's dark magic shattered like glass, the bits dissolving into nothing.

Victor stumbled backward. His shadow wolves growled uncertainly, no longer sure who was winning.

"This isn't over," Victor growled. He snapped his fingers, and a thick cloud of black smoke surrounded him and his dogs.

"Don't let him escape!" Lucian ordered.

Tobias rushed forward with several warriors, but by the time the smoke cleared, Victor and his elite guards had disappeared. Only the weaker shadow wolves remained, now lost and leaderless.

Caleb dropped to his knees, the blue light dimming. Tobias and Lucian caught him before he hit the ground.

"Easy," Lucian whispered, supporting Caleb's weight.

"Did we win?" Caleb asked softly.

Tobias managed a smile. "For now. Victor ran away like the coward he is."

They carried Caleb to a sheltered spot while the rest of the pack secured the area and rounded up the leftover shadow wolves.

"What was that?" Tobias asked once they were alone. "The shield, the blue light—I've never seen anything like it."

Caleb leaned against a rock, exhausted but living. "It was what my mother showed me. In that vision when I was unconscious."

"You channeled your power through our mate bond," Lucian said. "I could feel you drawing strength from us."

Caleb nodded. "A Bondspeaker can forge connections between wolves, but I never knew I could use the mate bond that way."

Tobias took Caleb's hand, feeling a faint echo of the connection they'd shared during the fight. "It was amazing."

"And dangerous," Lucian added, his face serious. "Victor knows now what you can do with us. He'll be more determined than ever to separate us."

Before they could discuss it further, Isabel approached with Reid beside her.

"The wounded are being treated," she reported. "No deaths on our side."

"And the shadow wolves?" Lucian asked.

"Most fled when Victor disappeared. The ones we captured seem... different."

"Different how?" Tobias asked.

"Like they're waking up," Reid explained. "The shadow corruption is fading. Some are even talking, asking what happened to them."

"It's the blood bond," Caleb said. "When Victor ran, his control weakened."

Isabel studied Caleb with worry. "We should get you back to the caves. You need rest."

"No," Caleb said, trying to stand. Tobias and Lucian helped him up. "Victor's still out there. He won't stop coming for me."

"And we'll be ready for him," Lucian assured him.

"You don't understand," Caleb insisted. "I felt his mind when our powers clashed. He's planning something worse—much worse. The blood he drank was just the beginning."

A chill ran down Tobias's spine. "What do you mean?"

Caleb's eyes filled with fear. "He's going to the sacred pools. He plans to complete the shadow ritual that my mother stopped years ago."

"That's just a legend," Isabel said, but she looked worried.

"It's real," Caleb said. "And if he succeeds, he'll control every wolf in the territory—maybe even beyond."

Silence fell as they absorbed this news.

"How long do we have?" Lucian finally asked.

"Three days until the dark moon," Isabel answered. "That's when the ritual must be performed."

"Then we have three days to stop him," Tobias said firmly.

Caleb's face was pale but determined. "There's something else. In the vision, my mother showed me how to counter the ritual. But it requires a sacrifice."

"What kind of sacrifice?" Tobias asked, dread filling his chest.

Caleb met his eyes, then Lucian's. "A life freely given. A Bondspeaker's life."

"No," Tobias said immediately. "There has to be another way."

"We'll find one," Lucian agreed, squeezing Caleb's shoulder.

But Caleb didn't look convinced. "And if we don't?"

Before either could answer, a wolf howled from the edge of the valley—an alarm signal.

Lucian cursed. "More trouble."

Reid ran to check, returning moments later with news that made Tobias's blood run cold.

"It's not Victor," Reid reported. "It's the Council of Alphas. They've surrounded the valley with hundreds of wolves from every territory."

"Why would the Council be here?" Isabel wondered.

"Victor," Caleb realized, struggling to his feet. "He must have told them about me—about what I can do."

A messenger approached, bowing to Lucian. "The Council demands you surrender the Bondspeaker immediately. They say his power threatens all wolves."

Lucian growled. "Tell them the Bondspeaker is under our protection."

"They thought you'd say that," the messenger replied nervously. "That's why they brought this."

He handed Lucian a small cloth bundle. When Lucian unwrapped it, his face went white.

"What is it?" Tobias asked, moving to see.

Inside the cloth lay a silver pendant bearing the mark of the Vale family—the one Lucian and Tobias's father had always worn.

"They have our father," Lucian whispered, his voice shaking with rage. "The Council is holding the former Alpha hostage."

Caleb looked from Lucian to Tobias, seeing the shock and fury on their faces.

"What do we do now?" he asked softly.

For once, neither brother had an answer.
