Chapter 26 Full control
Rex
Just in front of Dean’s Diner, a black sedan pulled over. A man dressed in black stepped out of the car. He bowed and opened the passenger seat for her. The door was closed once she entered, and the car drove off. I couldn't do much as I didn't have my car with me.
Did Naomi know about this? Or was it something the lady did often? Looking at where they were staying, one couldn't help but notice that they weren't even a middle-class family. Maybe they were hiding something.
Great! This was getting more interesting—another layer to the story. Since I didn't have my car, I decided to let it go, but I was not going to be this generous next time.
With my hoodie up and my hands in my pockets, I decided to walk home. It wasn't that far from here, which is why I was able to make it to this side. I decided to pass through Xylos; I might find something.
Just a few meters away from the tall buildings, I saw a white van coming from the opposite direction. I ducked behind a utility pole. The van stopped in front of the gates. A man with a mask on his face stepped down and moved to the back of the van. He opened it, and a different car I hadn't noticed coming behind stopped right next to the van.
Two people stepped out and rushed to the back of the opened van. I watched keenly. What was in that van that those people had to be there? Something was being pulled out of the van. An animal. My blood ran cold at the sight of it.
Not just any animal. A werewolf. I stood up straight. What was going on? What were they going to do with it? Use it as a lab rat for their next invention? No, that was not going to happen. It couldn't happen. I had to do something.
I looked around for a tool, but there was nothing. It was dragged through the gates. The van made a U-turn and left, while the smaller car made its way inside. I waited for everything to be quiet before making a move. I walked to the gate. These people were no fools; they wouldn't leave the gates open. Still, I made my way to them.
To my utmost surprise, the gates were open. They must have forgotten to lock them. Wasn't luck on my side today? I pushed the gates and made my way inside. I wasn't prepared for what I saw. It was huge in there, but that was not my focus. The main door was left open. I followed the footsteps while trying to avoid the cameras.
The walls were made of reflective glass. The only thing you could see was your reflection, not what was happening inside the rooms. I stopped in front of a door when I saw Calix and Julian next to a white slab. They were talking about something and pointing at it. Julian said something that made Calix laugh. Soon, they both turned their attention to a door behind them.
The werewolf was brought inside and thrown on the slab like it was nothing. Next, someone dressed in a white lab coat came inside. He raised his hand, revealing a syringe. I couldn't see the contents since I was not close. I watched keenly. He moved to the slab and stabbed the hindlimb of the werewolf with the syringe, making it shake on the table. In no time, it transformed into a human.
I stood rigid, my hands tight against my sides. What was that? They all jumped into a happy mood like their experiment had finally succeeded. They watched in amazement. Naomi and Julian held the hands of the werewolf and lifted her off the slab.
My eyes widened at the sight in front of me. That was Nina, a girl from the pack. Last time I checked, she and Lanken had something going on. Why did he have to involve her in this? Did he know she was in this state? Had he even bothered to check on her?
I couldn't let them do anything to her. I knew her quite well. Without much thinking, my hand came in contact with the door and I banged so hard on it. My claws started to protrude, my fingers scraping against the door. This brought their attention to the entrance. I held my mask tightly against my face.
I stood close to the door, waiting. It opened, and I didn't bother to look at the face of the person there. I hit the door against their faces, and they fell to the floor. I sent a punch to the next person, making them fall back. Calix. Too sad she had to be here at this time. The last one was Julian, who was trying to be tough, but a blow to the side of his stomach sent him crashing down on the others.
I skipped over them to the floor and picked Nina up over my shoulder. The door behind them was still open. I took that direction, not knowing exactly where it was taking me, but I needed to leave this place. I followed that entrance, and it took me to the back of the building. I should have used my werewolf form if she could shift, but she was in too vulnerable a state for that. With her on my back, I took the path into the woods. I was sure I would find the road soon enough. I heard footsteps behind us, but they weren't too close. I was not going to let them catch up.
When I was far enough that they couldn't catch us, I sent a mind-link to Jaimie, my friend, to bring a car to carry us to the pack. I wouldn't be able to carry her the whole way on my own. We waited behind a tree. She was still unconscious. Hopefully, we would be able to revive her from whatever had been injected into her system.
"What happened to her?" Jaimie asked as we hit the road. I didn't know what to tell him.
"Ask Lanken when we get back to the pack. He should know what happened."
"He is still in bad shape. You did him dirty, bro." I almost rolled my eyes at that. It would be worse if something happened to Nina. He should have stopped this the first time I asked him to.
We got to the pack, and Nina was quickly rushed to the nurses' quarters. She was put under examination. I didn't stay long; I had to be back in Teran before dawn. I would come back later. Lanken and I would sit and have a conversation about what he had been doing.
There was a full moon up, and this wouldn't be good for me. I needed to walk in a way that my back wouldn't be exposed to the moon; otherwise, I would not be able to make it to Teran alive, and if I did, it would not be under favorable conditions.
