Chapter 10 To face punishment
Naomi
The following week, there was no news about werewolves. I was surprised that Calix hadn't stopped to attack me even once this week. News had surfaced on Monday that she, her friends and a guy were caught doing drugs in an old construction site. However, on Wednesday, there was no news about that. No one was heard talking about it. It wouldn't be surprising if someone told me that her father had stopped the rumors from spreading. She had that advantage. She wasn't in school on Thursday. Perhaps, she was still trying to figure out how to deal with it, which was kind of odd to me, given that she could do whatever she wanted.
On Friday, we stood in lines on the field. Julian was our coach. His jet black hair fell down his face. He kept pushing the hair aside as he stared at the paper in his hands.
Mr. Rex was sitting at the side of the field watching with a book in one hand and a pen in another.
He seemed to be jotting something down. I didn't know what was going on, but I kept looking in his direction and each time I did, he was looking back at me. I did not like doing that. I noticed he did that whenever he came to class. It was uncomfortable for me. Soon, news will spread that I had something to do with him. Calix already started by asking me questions. If it spread around, I wouldn't be able to get out of it. I didn't have people to cover up information for me.
Julian stepped in front of the students, paper in one hand and a sword in the other. It must be the silver sword which we will use for the training.
I didn't see Calix in school this morning. But i was not suprised when i saw her at the training. She couldn't missed. She was one of the best fighters when it came to this. She had received many awards from different competitions across the country. Her brother, Julian was no different either. They both were good at it.
Calix walked across the field to where Julian was standing. Her hair, one side dialed brown and the side brown, was pulled up in a bun. She wasn't in the normal brown school shirt. She wore a crop top that showed her lower belly. She leaned closer to Julian's ear. It was like she told him something as they both looked in my direction. Julian's eyes linger for a moment before he nodded at his sister.
With that she left and came to join the line, while Julian proceeded to address the students.
“Like I said last week, we will begin our first sword training today. These swords…” He lifted the one he was holding. He stared at it for a moment. It was like he had the habit of looking at things for a moment before averting his gaze.
“These swords are laced with silver. It is a dangerous element that is meant to kill werewolves.”
“It has no effect on humans, but you have to be careful on how you use them. This fight is to prepare you against any future attacks, so you have to take it seriously.”
“Make sure not to hurt yourself or anyone.”
“Without being said, I will go ahead and call out the names.”
“When you come up, you take a sword and stand on that black mat.” He pointed to a mat that was not far from him.
He started calling out the names. This time. he was pairing boys with boys and girls with girls, the first set of students were boys and the second were two sets of girls.
“ Naomi Soreil and Calix Polivan.”
My brows knitted and searched the line for Calix.
That must be what Calix had gone up there to tell him. Asked him to pair her with me.
She had something up her sleeves. I was positive about that.
I didn't argue. I went to the pit and picked up a sword.
They were not as heavy as I thought they would be, although they had a little bit of weight.
Calix picked up her own sword and joined me on the mat.
There was a sinister smile on her face as she looked up at me. I didn't give her any reaction. I just wanted to get this done and hurry back home. We will not meet again after this until Monday.
“All right, start.”
Julian blew the whistle. Calix lurched towards me, her sword directly in my face. I had no idea if she was aiming for my eyes or my face in general but I ducked my head down and swung my sword closed to her ankle.
She looked at me like she was not expecting that. Well, I guess she was not. "Show me what you have got, marked witch" She snarled, lurching towards me. Her sword hit the side of my stomach. Luckily it was not the blade that could give me a cut.
"Come on." She kept urging. With my sword raised, I bit my bottom lip and studied the area around her. She was focused, making those comments and looking up at my face.
Within a quick moment, I reached my left leg to the back of her left calf since she was facing me. I tackled her and she fell to the ground. The sword in her hand landed a about two meters away from us. She looked at the distance of the sword and then at me.
Her eyes widened when she saw my sword pressed on her throat. It was like she had seen a ghost.
Clapping echoed in the corner. Mr. Rex stood not far from us, hands jamming against each other.
He winked at me, a smile on his face. I stared at his smile. I didn't know he had such a beautiful smile. Even from here, I could see that. It was like the sun that brightened every corner of the earth. Yes, not forgetting how white his teeth were.
"Get off her" there was a touch on my shoulder. The coldness of the hand touched me, almost making me shiver. I looked behind me to see Julian. He immediately stepped away. I pulled my sword and stepped away from them.
In the locker to take my stuffs, when a someone shouted my name.
"Naomi Soreil Alistair. You are wanted in the disciplinary council.”
Huh?
What did I do that they wanted me there?
With everything inside my bag, I made my way to the office. Mr. Moses and Robert, the teachers occupying this office were inside, sitting behind their desks. It was a big office where each of them could have their own tables. But they shared a black table.
"Have a seat." I nodded and sat in front of Mr. Robert. He pushed his glasses down the bridge of his nose and looked at me.
"I have never heard of you, until yesterday." I wanted to go ahead and ask what I did, I decided to stay silent and hear from him.
"You're part of the Scourge right?"
Oh, so it was about this? Calix told them. "Yes, sir. I am."
Mr. Moses acted like this was not part of his business which I greatly appreciated because I was not in the right frame of mind to answer questions from two teachers simultaneously .
"We have reports which stated that you ran away from the mission and left your friends behind."
"I was scared, sir." I admitted. That was not the truth though. There was no fear in me that night. If there was, I wouldn't have followed that animal with blue eyes to the place I had.
"What is one of the rules for this mission, Naomi." Mr. Robert commanded, making me almost jumped out of my skin.
"To stick with each other, no matter what happens.” I'm not sure these rules would have been made if it was the teachers carrying out these missions. They knew how dangerous this was.
"For that reason, you will have to face punishment."
Really, were they serious right now? Being punished for trying to save my life?
