Chapter 202 Explanation
Chapter 202 Explanation
Laurette’s POV
What the hell?
I huff and puff in the street below Hosea’s apartment, turning back to glare at the window of his living room. I don’t even care that he is probably looking down at me. I deserve a solid explanation as to what the fuck just happened in that house.
Who the hell is that man? And why did the air get ten times heavier the moment he walked in? And most importantly, why the hell did Hosea treat me like a slut in his presence?
I fold my arms across my chest as I rack my brain. Hosea’s father’s face was plastered across billboards all over Greytown, and on National Television. So it was pretty certain that I would recognize him the moment I see him.
But I was also certain that this isn’t him. There was also no semblance whatsoever.
I pull my phone out and dial Frankie’s number, using the time it takes for her to pick up to really gather my thoughts and suspicions. I let out a frustrated huff when the automated voice tells me she’s unavailable. I am about dialing again when a bike suddenly pulls over across the street. The rider steps down to pull out a couple of paper bags from the box at the back of his bike.
The Chinese food Hosea ordered.
The rider crosses the street, acknowledging me with a low greeting and moving to walk past me. I bite my lip and throw one last hurtful glance at the window of Hosea’s living room, and them without thinking twice, I raise my voice.
“Oh that would be for me.” I smile at the delivery guy, who looks confused for barely half a second before shrugging it off and handing the bags over to me. He politely pulls out a clip board and a pen, showing me where to sign and I do so eagerly.
I was denied my breakfast and the entire day by reason of this strange man’s attendance, and I’m hoping to get at least my breakfast back.
I wave goodbye to the rider as he crosses the street back to his bike, just as my phone vibrates in my hand. I swipe the screen and bring it to my ear when I see Frankie’s name flashing across it.
“What the hell dude?!” Frankie yells immediately, making me pull the phone back a notch. “Where the hell have you been? And why don’t you answer your damn phone?”
“I should be asking you the same thing”. I roll my eyes, hailing an approaching cab with the hand holding the bags.
“I’m at the pub, scoundrel. Hank asked me to help him out. And you?”
I call out my destination to the driver and get in, raking my hands through my hair. “Hosea’s”
“You spent the night?” I can hear the suspicion in her voice as she asks, “Are you coming back alone?”
“It’s a long story.” I breathe, fixing my eyes on the trees and buildings outside the window.
Frankie sighs heavily. “Sure it is. I had to cook up a story to Cora when she asked where you went. I told her you were with me and fell asleep over a movie. Which is why you didn’t come home”.
“What on earth would I do without you?” I breathe, shutting my eyes.
“Nothing, clearly.” I shake my head, meaning it. I know I will still have to face my Mama’s wrath despite Frankie’s lie, but that isn’t what I’m most worried about.
The moment I get off the phone with Frankie, my thumb hovers over Hosea’s name, but I shake my head at the idea of calling him first.
I’m going to wait till he comes to me with my explanation. Even if it takes a while.
