Chapter 53 The One She Saved
Chapter 53 The One She Saved
The barrier opened with a low, ancient hum, and silver light rippled outward as Zoe stepped forward, her hand hovering just inches from the invisible wall. It responded to her—recognising her, yielding to her—like it had been waiting. Zack felt it immediately, that power, old, scared and dangerous. “This place…” he muttered. “It’s tied to you.” Zoe didn’t answer, she couldn’t because the moment the barrier parted—
Memories hit, not gently, not in fragments, but like a storm breaking open.
Chains. Darkness. A heartbeat that shook the ground itself and her voice—stronger, colder— “I won’t let you die.” Zoe gasped, stumbling slightly forward. “Zoe!” Zack reached for her. “I’m fine—” she breathed, though her body trembled. “I just… remember more now.” Jacob’s expression hardened. “Then we move carefully.” They stepped inside, and the cave was massive—far larger than it looked from the outside.
The walls shimmered faintly with the same silver energy as the barrier, but deeper within, something darker pulsed, alive, watching and waiting. Lucas stayed close behind them. “I swear, if something jumps out at me—”
“Shut up,” Zack muttered. Lucas raised his hands. “Just saying.” Zoe walked slowly ahead, drawn, as if something were pulling her deeper; every step echoed, and every breath felt heavier. Then—She stopped, and her eyes widened, “…I remember this place.” Zack moved beside her “What is it?” Zoe’s voice dropped. “I didn’t hide him.” She looked ahead into the darkness, “I sealed him.”
The air shifted, and a low rumble echoed through the cave and then, a voice, deep and ancient, “Zoe…” Everyone froze. Zack’s entire body tensed “Who the hell was that?” Zoe’s heart slammed against her chest “I… know that voice.” The ground cracked slightly beneath them. Dark energy seeped through the cracks; the silver barrier around the cave flickered, struggling, as if it were weakening. Zack stepped closer to Zoe. “That doesn’t sound like something you ‘saved.’”
Zoe didn’t respond because deep down, she knew. He wasn’t just something she protected; he was something she feared “Zola…” The voice came again, closer this time, stronger and more real. Zoe stepped forward, “Wait,” Zack grabbed her wrist. “We don’t know what that is.” Zoe met his gaze. “I do.” Zack frowned. “Then explain.” Zoe hesitated. Then— “He’s not just a hybrid.” Jacob’s eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?”
Zoe swallowed. “He’s… the first.” Silence, James blinked, “…The first what?” Zoe’s voice was barely above a whisper. “The first hybrid ever created.” Zack’s chest tightened. “That’s not possible.” Zoe shook her head. “It is.” Her eyes flickered again with memory. “The priestess said it… But I didn’t understand it fully until now.” Jacob stepped forward. “And you sealed him here?” Zoe nodded slowly. “I had to.”
The voice echoed again, this time, right in front of them. The darkness shifted, and a figure stepped out, tall, unnaturally still, and his eyes glowed faintly with a mix of silver, red, and something darker. Not wolf, not human, not anything they’d ever seen before. Zack growled low. “That’s not normal.” Zoe didn’t move. Her breath caught. “It’s him.”
The hybrid tilted his head slightly, studying her, like he was seeing her for the first time “Zola…You came back.” Zoe’s chest tightened painfully “That was the person you knew before. I am now called Zoe.”
“Zoe”, the hybrid said, still looking at her, “you came back”
“I didn’t want to.” He smiled faintly. “But you did.” Zack stepped forward. “Back away from her.” The hybrid didn’t even look at him. His eyes stayed on Zoe. “You look different.” Zoe’s jaw tightened. “So do you.” Lucas whispered behind them, “Should we… attack it? Jacob shook his head slightly. “Not yet,” because something was off. This wasn’t an attack, this was… recognition.
The hybrid took a step closer, and Zack moved instantly, blocking him. “Don’t.” The hybrid finally looked at him, and for the first time, Something dangerous flickered. “You’re in my way.” Zack didn’t flinch. “Stay there.” The hybrid’s lips twitched slightly. “You think you can stop me?” Zack’s eyes darkened. “Try me.” The air shifted violently, powers clashed, wolf and something else. Zoe stepped between them. “STOP.” The command echoed, not just in the cave— But in their minds, both Zack and the hybrid froze. Zoe turned slowly toward Zack. “I need to talk to him.”
Zack shook his head immediately. “No.” Zoe’s voice softened. “Please.” Zack clenched his jaw. Everything in him screamed no. But— “…Five minutes.” Zoe nodded. “That’s all I need.” Zack stepped back reluctantly, but he didn’t take his eyes off the hybrid, not for a second. Zoe faced him fully now, her heart pounding. “Why didn’t you leave?” The hybrid blinked slightly. “…Leave?” Zoe gestured around them. “The barrier broke. You could have escaped.” The hybrid tilted his head. “And go where?” Zoe hesitated. “You could have destroyed everything.”
He smiled faintly “I could have.” Zoe frowned “But you didn’t.” The hybrid’s gaze softened slightly. “…Because you asked me not to.” Zoe’s breath caught “I… what?” Memories hit again, clearer this time, herself—stronger, older, standing in front of him, covered in blood, feeling tired and broken and saying— “If I let you live… You must promise me you won’t destroy this world.” Zoe staggered slightly. “…You promised me.”
The hybrid nodded once “I did.” Zack’s entire body tensed; he didn’t like this, not at all. “What the hell did you do?” he muttered under his breath. Zoe looked at the hybrid, conflicted “You killed people.” He didn’t deny it, “I did.” Zoe’s chest tightened “Then why should I trust you?” The hybrid stepped closer. Zack immediately tensed again, but Zoe held up a hand “Stop.” The hybrid stopped, without hesitation. “I don’t want to destroy anything,” he said quietly.
Zoe studied him carefully. “Then what do you want?” The hybrid’s answer came softly. “You.” The word hit like a shockwave, and Zack growled immediately. “Yeah, that’s not happening.” Zoe’s eyes widened slightly. “…What do you mean?” The hybrid’s gaze didn’t waver. “You’re the only one who ever saw me as more than a weapon.” Zoe’s heart pounded. “That doesn’t mean—”
“It means everything.” The cave trembled suddenly, and a familiar dark energy seeped in, cold, twisted and wrong. Zoe’s eyes snapped toward the entrance “Morgana.” The hybrid’s expression darkened instantly “She’s here.” Zack stepped forward. “Then we end this.” A chilling laugh echoed through the cave. “You found him faster than I expected.” Morgana’s mist seeped through the entrance. Her form is slowly materialising. Her eyes locked onto the hybrid “There you are.”
The hybrid stepped slightly in front of Zoe, protective, Zack noticed and didn’t like it at all. Morgana smiled. “This just got easier.” Zoe stepped forward again “No.” Her power surged. Silver light clashing with Morgana’s darkness. “You don’t get him.” Morgana’s smile widened. “Oh, Zoe…” Her eyes gleamed. “You still don’t understand.” The cave trembled violently. Power was building; it was clashing and exploding all around the cave, “Without him—” Morgana’s voice dropped. “I can’t break the world.”
Zoe’s heart slammed, Zack growled, Lucas cursed, James growled, and Jacob stepped forward, claws at the ready. Zoe’s eyes burned with determination. “Then you’re not getting him.” Morgana laughed. “Try and stop me.” The war had officially begun.
