Chapter 18

CLAIRE'S POV

Learning about Erica's pregnancy is one of the best things ever. The very thought that I'm going to have a new companion excited me. When I heard about Erica's story, it was hard at first, but it wasn't her fault either. She was just a broken little girl seeking for love and acceptance which is with the wrong people . I thought as I grind the ‘melo seeds’ for pregnant women. Her pregnancy is now almost visible and therefore she needs extra care, guidance and attention.

I have never had any experience of being pregnant or being with pregnant women but I had heard a lot about it from the female folks around here and my mother, of course she's a healer who deals with roots and herbs. Erica has not been eating well for the past two weeks now and I can't help but be worried for the child in her womb. Carrying an Alpha's baby is quite riskier than one could imagine as my mom had told me before she passed away. She told me the story of a young human girl who was mated to an Alpha hundreds of years ago.

She had been pregnant for the Alpha and there was no one to guide her all through the pregnancy as no one really liked the fact that their Alpha married a “mere human” as they called her. So, even after knowing that she needed thorough guidance, rituals and help all through the pregnancy no one showed up for her and she of course carried the pregnancy like an human would, without knowing the implications of it. She doesn't eat on time, claiming loss of appetite, she doesn't sleep well, with the excuse of insomnia and so on.

Soon after, the baby in her was hungry and distressed and being an extra ordinary baby, had eaten up it's mother's womb before the day of the actual birth, she died. Her husband had woken up to see her stomach wide open like someone had dug a big hole in her and the baby, in it's werewolf form peeping at him. He shouted for help and several rituals was done on both the dead mother’s body and the strange baby and of course he gave up the baby for adoption because according to him, he can't accommodate a murderer in his house. And what eventually happened to the baby afterwards, no one knew.

“Do not fall in love with an human to prevent something like this happening to you” she would always warned each time she finishes telling the story. And seeing Erica displaying similar symptoms as the girl, I could feel shivers run down my spine as I grind the seeds in a hurry. Soon after, she staggered in looking all pale like blood had been drained out from her. I gave her the drink and made sure she drank from it.

“It smells!” She yelled, scrunching up her nose. “I know, just drink it already” I replied to her with a worried smile. After drinking the concoction, she looked less pale and requested for food which I quickly gave her. I kept her company while she ate and decided to tell her whom she reminded me of.

“Erica” I called. “Hmmm” she replied amidst mouthfuls of food. “I helped you for a reason and I'll like to tell you the reason now. Don't you wanna know?” “Tell me already!” she yelled and I rolled my eyes. One thing I have come to notice about her ever since I became aware of her pregnancy was the fact that her temperament is unstable, she can be very happy now and the next minute, she's extremely sad or impatient and angry.

“You looked like my father” I said with a distant look on my face. “You see, a lot has happened between my father and mother.” “They seperated while I was still young, the reason for that, I don't know but I heard that it was orchestrated by an Alpha who lost my mom to my father.” “They were both in love with her but my mom chose my father over him and he held the grudge for a long time, devising means of ruining the marriage and he eventually succeeded.” “Whatever actually happened my mom has refused to tell me.” “She had hoped to explain herself to my dad, once more before dying.” “ But she never had the chance to do so until she eventually passed away.” I said with a distant look on my face.

“My dad became a rogue wolf afterwards because he couldn't beat the pain and heartbreak of leaving my mother and he had been living in Darkmoon, ever since then….” “Wait!” she interrupted me and stopped eating. “why does this sounds familiar though?” “I mean, this was exactly what happened to my father and mother too, but in my own case, I was told I was abandoned by both parents” she said trying to think further. I tried connecting the dots after listening to her and then suddenly came to a realization that, she might be the daughter my mom claimed she lost because her striking resemblance with my father is shocking and proved so.

“What is the name of your father?” I asked her, trying to connect the dots. She thought for a while before saying “Elias, they called him Alpha Elias” I jumped up from where I was and hugged her tightly, wailing uncontrollably as I sent the food crashing down to the floor in the process. She looked at me in confusion. “What is the problem?” She asked me, worriedly. You are my sister Erica, “you are the sister they lied to my parents about” I said to her touching her face and hair all over.

“Are you serious?” she asked with tear filled eyes. “Yes I am” I sniffled. “Why did they abandoned me then? Where is father? What happened?” “why did they not look for me then?” “I need answers to all these questions I've been bottling up in me all these years!” She screamed and I hugged her, trying to coax her.
