CHAPTER 261
My canon event – There is no answer. Milly is the answer.
ROMEO

By the time Final week rolls in, Milly is steaming hot. I’d thought she’d cool off since we’re graduating soon; I was mistaken. She is the best graduating student. She has always been the best, most brilliant student in the entire district. She has been recognised for her excellence, and this seems to have lit a fire in her, a fire that only burns hotter.

However, I’m concerned when I wake up a few days into our final exam to find her burning the midnight candle.

“Milly,” I sigh, looking at her. Her hair is in a bun. She is wearing my hoodie and shorts. Two textbooks are open in front of her, perched against the kitchen rack.

I’d woken up and found the bed empty.

She glances at me and sends me a guilty smile.

“We have AP English tomorrow. This is your favourite subject. Why are you still reading?” I glance at the wall clock in dismay. “One in the morning. We went to bed three hours ago. You know that you can’t function well if you do not get enough sleep.”

“I know, but what if something else comes up? What if this affects my grade?” She covers her face in frustration.

I close the distance between us and stand by her side. I tilt her chin towards me. “Tell me what is going on, what is really going on.”

She swallows slowly and looks at me. “What if I’m in over my head? Why did I choose Law? What was I thinking? I should have chosen something in the humanities, maybe English Language, or History, not something as complex as Law. What if I get into Oxford and I … cave?”

“You won’t.” My chest hurts for her, for the overwhelming pressure she is under.

“How can you be sure?” She glares at me, cheeks redder.

“Because I know you.” I smile, caressing her cheeks. “I know you, Millicent Stark. You are obstinate, determined, bold in ways which make me scared. You never give up or back down from a challenge. Oxford is a challenge, but it is also exciting. It is new, so I understand that you are scared, but think of it from this angle – it is new, Milly, a brand new chance to experience life anew, to make new friends, form new bonds with Professors, and TAs, to visit the libraries, to conquer hard subjects, to shine.”

She exhales slowly and nods before asking, “Are you afraid too?”

“Absolutely terrified.” I blurt out.

A giggle slips out of her, and I smile at the soft sound.

“Really? You’re afraid?” She asks, leaning into me.

“Of course, I am. I’ll be way out of my depth, a fish out of water, and I’ll have to figure it out on my own.”

“You won’t be on your own, though. You’ll always have us.” She reminded me with a warm smile.

“And, who knows, you may get a pretty cool roommate.” She added, making my mouth twitch.

“We’ll always have each other, and we’ll help each other. We’ll never be alone.” I declare firmly, shoulders squared in determination.

“Never.” She agrees.

“Now, let’s go to bed.” I bend and carry her in my arms, making her squeak.

“Romeo!” She gasps, laughing into my chest.

I want to bottle up the sound and take it with me forever!

__

We sail through Finals without a hitch, and we’re thrust into graduation week.

We are graduating!

It feels surreal. A lot has happened in the past year, and I cannot keep up with the changes. How did my life change so much?

There is no answer, and Milly is the answer.

She has changed my life in ways I never thought were possible. I have always heard about how sometimes, all we need is one person, one person to change the course of our life, and Millicent is mine.

She is my cannon event. She didn’t just change my life, but she changed my family’s life too. She spread love through my family, pulling us even closer. She fixed my relationship with my father, with Kai, with my siblings, and with Jordan. She made me strong enough to make hard choices. She shifted my mentality, and I was born anew.

“Does this dress look good?” She asks, staring at herself in the mirror.

The boys and I already have our tuxes for graduation, but the girls wanted something new. We’ll follow them to the end of the world if they ask.

This is Milly’s third dress, and I do not know what to say. She can wear a sack and still make it look beautiful.

“This makes me feel like a boss, as if I’ve stepped out of a mafia novel.” She grins, touching the gemstone encrusted on her bust. It is a stunning black dress, and I’m getting it for her. I’m getting her everything.

“Take it all.” Pandora takes the words out of my mouth. “I’m taking it all.” She had also tried on three new dresses.

“All? Are you sure? The dresses are expensive.” Milly frowns, trying to find the price tag.

“Romeo doesn’t mind.” Darcy gives her a pointed look.

I nod eagerly. “I do not mind at all. All the dresses are stunning. Take as much as you need. You’re graduating from High School.”

She turns to me and narrows her gaze. I wait for her to tell me she doesn’t want my money, or stuff like that, but all she does is nod and mouth “Thank you.”

Warmth fills my heart. She has no idea how much I love her, how much I am going to take care of her. This is only the beginning.

“Why don’t we move to the shoe aisle? I saw some that will fit our new dresses.” Darcy suggests, staring at her own dress affectionately.

“Sounds like a plan. Come on, let me help you out of it.” Jordan smiles at her, and she pulls him into the dressing room.
