Chapter 92 Emergency Arrival
But right now, Emily sat in the executive meeting room at Morrison Corp.
"Our project handover this time..."
Buzz!
Suddenly, Emily's phone vibrated in her bag.
She glanced at it. It was Susan.
Should be nothing big... Susan hardly ever calls me.
Emily silenced the call without a second thought and returned her focus to the discussion. The projector still displayed the third iteration of the design drawing—the version she had painstakingly refined late into the night.
But just as her finger slid across the key page of the plan, her phone buzzed hard again.
Her heart tightened. Something was wrong.
Susan was a longtime servant of the Baker family. She wouldn't call back after being hung up unless it was urgent.
Emily stood up and signaled to Ryan. "Sorry, Mr. Morrison. I need to take this call. Can we pause the meeting for a few minutes?"
Ryan raised an eyebrow. "Go ahead, Miss Johnson."
"Thanks." Emily grabbed her phone and headed outside right away.
Taking a call like this and stopping the meeting was rude, but she had no choice.
In the hallway, she covered the mouthpiece. "Susan?"
"Miss Emily, big trouble! The old lady had an accident!"
"What?!"
Susan's crying voice nearly pierced her ear.
Emily froze and asked right away, "What happened? How's Grandma?"
"I don't know. She went for her usual hospital checkup today. I was making lunch at home. Then the hospital called, said she fainted and they rushed her to emergency. It's serious!"
Emily's heart pounded. "Did you call Alex?"
Susan was jammed in a car, pushing the driver to speed up. "I did! But Mr. Baker's phone won't connect. Miss Johnson, can you come to the hospital?"
Emily gripped her phone tight. "Which hospital? Text me the address. I'm on my way!"
"Okay, okay!"
Emily hung up, rushed back to the meeting room, and grabbed her bag in a panic.
Ryan saw something was off and asked, "What's wrong? What happened?"
Emily's voice shook. "Margaret's in the ER. I have to go. Mr. Morrison, our meeting has to stop for now. Once I get Grandma settled, I'll rush back."
Ryan's face darkened. He grabbed his car keys without a word. "I'll drive you!"
The Baker family and the Morrisons were longtime family friends. Plus, he and Alex were close—he had to check it out.
He stopped the project meeting cold and waved to the staff. "Meeting's on hold. Everything waits till I get back."
Emily had no time to thank him. She just nodded quick.
They hurried to the underground parking lot and sped to the hospital.
The car felt heavy.
Her fingers were ice-cold. She kept checking Susan's texts. Her heart hung in the air—she could hardly breathe.
Margaret treated her like her own granddaughter. She couldn't let anything happen to Grandma!
But why faint out of nowhere?
The old lady was always tough. And the hospital under the Baker family had top doctors.
Her checkup report from a few days ago was fine, right?
Screech—
The brakes squealed.
"We're here. I..."
Bang!
Ryan wasn't done talking when Emily shoved the door open and ran.
He twitched his mouth. "This hotheaded side. She's changed a lot in the last few years."
He hurried after her.
Emily knew the hospital well and went straight to the ER.
Her high heels clicked fast on the floor.
Outside the ER.
The red light glared.
Medical staff lined both sides of the hall. The mood was dead serious.
This was Mr. Baker's grandma. The whole hospital was on edge, scared of screwing up.
Nearby, a woman in plain clothes leaned on the wall. Her shoulders shook a little. She looked sad and lost.
It was Grace.
Emily frowned. "Why are you here?"
Grace heard the steps and looked up slow. Her eyes were red, tears on her lashes. "Miss Johnson, you came too? Grandma, she..."
Her voice cracked with grief. She started to say more but spotted Ryan behind.
Grace's mind raced. Wasn't that Alex's buddy?
Didn't expect him here...
She cried even harder, choking up. "When the doctors took Grandma in, I got scared too. I used to be with Alex... I couldn't just leave now. With you and Mr. Morrison here, I feel better. Does Alex know yet?"
Emily's look went cold.
Back at the old house, Grace had upset the old lady with her words.
Now showing up at the same hospital?
Way too convenient.
Emily stepped closer, voice icy. "This is Grandma's regular therapy clinic. You shouldn't be here."
Grace shook, tears pouring. She pulled her appointment slip and med pickup record from her bag. She held them out to Emily. "Miss Johnson, you got it wrong."
"I just came for meds to help my health. After that live stream mess—and you didn't back me up at all—my career tanked.
"Now I just want to live quiet with my kid. What's wrong with that? Bumping into Grandma was pure chance."
Ryan listened, eyes narrowing.
He knew a little about her and Alex.
Didn't seem like bad motives.
Grace stood up shakily and got closer to Emily, voice softer. "I get it. Past mix-ups made you think bad of me. But I want a calm life now. When I saw Grandma faint, I yelled for the doctor first thing. I did all I could..."
Her words rang true, full of pain. Her papers checked out—she was just getting meds.
But the timing...
Right then, a young nurse came from the med fridge with drugs, heading to the ER.
Ryan stepped up. "Hey, how's the patient? When did it happen?"
The nurse rushed. "Fainted 15 minutes ago, just got to ER. If this lady hadn't spotted it quick, it'd be worse! Family? Wait out here, keep it quiet!"
She went in.
Ryan eased up, eyed Grace less wary. "Thanks, Miss Miller. When Alex shows, I'll tell him."
Grace smiled inside. Perfect—just what she wanted!
