Chapter 85 Saying One Thing but Meaning Another

Chapter 85 Saying One Thing but Meaning Another

As soon as he finished speaking, the pen in the man's hand reflected a cold gleam, and the oppressive atmosphere in the air became even more obvious.

Alex sat behind his large desk, looking at those photos with a cold laugh. "Got nothing better to do?"

Across from the desk sat a man in a custom-tailored suit, legs crossed, his face full of mockery.

He was Alex's childhood friend and a notorious playboy in their circle—Ryan Morrison.

"Mr. Baker, that hurts my feelings. Sure, Emily and I are friends too, but I can't forget my buddy for a pretty face. Tsk, I went through a lot of trouble to get these photos."

He raised an eyebrow and casually picked up one of the photos to toy with.

It clearly showed Emily holding a child, with Matthew attentively by her side. The three of them walking side by side through a shopping mall looked like the perfect family.

The office felt bone-chillingly cold.

Alex said: "What's that got to do with me? Take them away."

Ryan's lips curved slightly. "Come on, others might not know, but don't I? These past two years, you've clearly still had feelings for Emily. Is it really necessary to turn yourself into a work machine? Now she's finally back, and you're still acting so cold. Don't say I didn't warn you."

Talk about being more anxious than the person involved.

Alex's already stern face now looked even more frosty. "Does your old man know you have this much free time?"

With that, he continued processing documents.

As for those photos, he only glanced at them once.

Ryan frowned, dropping his playful expression. "I'm serious, Alex. What are you really thinking? Back then... never mind, no point bringing it up. Are you just going to keep watching from the sidelines?"

"We're already divorced."

Alex's tone was ice-cold, his hand moving across documents, signing off on projects worth hundreds of millions with a single stroke.

Just then, there was a gentle knock on the office door.

Michael walked in, looking somewhat troubled. "Mr. Baker, Miss Grace is downstairs at the company... she says it's urgent and wants to see you. She's been waiting for almost an hour."

Ryan, hearing this, laughed even more carelessly. "Oh, your first love is here. So, are you seeing her or not?"

He was waiting to watch the show.

Alex used to take pretty good care of Grace.

Otherwise, Grace wouldn't dare use Baker Corporation's name to make waves in their circle.

Not to mention, now that the woman was in trouble, Alex definitely wouldn't just stand by...

But the next second, the man said, "No."

Alex didn't even look up. "Tell her to leave. From now on, don't report anything about her to me."

Michael quickly nodded. "Yes, Mr. Baker."

Then he hurried out, breathing a heavy sigh of relief.

Good lord, his boss's aura was getting more and more intimidating.

He'd seen it clearly over the years—ever since Miss Johnson left, Mr. Baker hadn't paid any attention to Grace.

He just didn't expect him to be so decisive as to refuse even a meeting.

Ryan's eyes widened in disbelief. "No way, Alex. The person outside asking for your help is Grace. You're just sending her away like that?"

Alex finally looked up. "She and I never had anything to do with each other. If you're that bored, I'll find something for you to do. Your company's digitalization technology project..."

Ryan's mouth twitched. "Alright, alright, my bad for being nosy. Our company's been pretty busy lately too, with that Paris partnership project. I heard they sent over a new executive director. Quite a coincidence—this director is from around here, supposedly doing really well in Paris these past two years..."

He rambled on, but the man didn't spare him a single glance.

Ryan was speechless. "No wonder Emily divorced you. I couldn't live with you either."

"I'm out!" With that, he grabbed his car keys and left Baker Corporation.

The office became quiet again.

Alex looked at the documents on his desk, but couldn't take in a single word. His gaze drifted to the photos nearby.

Emily was holding a delicate little girl in her arms, and... Matthew's gentle gaze.

Ha, already has a kid?

Click.

He picked up the cigarette from his desk. Through the curling smoke, his stern face looked even more lonely.

Meanwhile, at the Baker family estate.

Margaret was sitting on the sofa.

She held prayer beads in her hand, looking worried.

Just then, Susan returned to the estate carrying nutritional supplements. "Madam, I've picked up everything you asked for."

"And I ran into Mrs. Baker... oh no, Miss Emily!" Susan's face was full of smiles as she handed the supplements to the old lady. "Look, Miss Emily specially picked these out for you. She said she knows you like this brand and asked me to bring them back for you."

Margaret looked at the elegant boxes on the table, her eyes instantly brightening, her worried expression swept away, replaced by warmth. "I knew my dear Emmie was thinking of me."

But thinking about Emily giving birth alone in Paris and suffering so much, the old lady's heart ached again.

She glanced at the empty estate and couldn't help but sigh. "It's all that brat's fault, not knowing how to cherish what he had. He drove away such a wonderful granddaughter-in-law."

Susan was silent for a moment, then shook her head. "Alex must be having a hard time too. These past two years, he's thought about Miss Emily quite a bit."

"What good does thinking do?" Margaret's eyes widened. "If he had just trusted Emmie a little more back then, things wouldn't have come to this!"

At this point, the old lady thought of her great-granddaughter, her eyes filled with tenderness.

Now Emmie was back, and she'd brought the Baker family bloodline with her... but she couldn't tell Alex.

Otherwise, knowing Alex's temperament, he'd probably go confront Emmie directly.

What if he scared the mother and daughter away in a moment of impulse?

She had to take it slow, first help the two of them ease their relationship... and tell him when the time was right.

Suddenly, Margaret smiled, her eyes crinkling. "Susan, keep an eye on Emmie's situation from now on. Send over whatever she needs, and don't let her suffer any hardship. Also, don't tell that brat about this! I want to see how upset he'll be when he finds out one day!"

"Don't worry, Madam. My lips are sealed." Susan nodded quickly.

Margaret looked at the items on the table, unable to suppress a smile.

...

The next morning.

Emily wore a simple professional outfit, her long hair pulled up, looking both capable and elegant.

She held a design proposal in her hand. "Eleanor, Mommy's going out to work for a little bit. I'll be back soon, okay? You need to be good at home."

Eleanor smiled, showing her baby teeth. "Eleanor knows!"
