Chapter 58 Doing It So Ruthlessly
The assistant was standing at the conference room door, gripping the phone, mind completely blank.
What to do?
Felt like crying.
Their CEO had only been away on business for a few days, and the divorce proceedings had somehow been pushed to the final stage unilaterally by his wife?
All procedures complete, just waiting for the court's decision...
The assistant's scalp tingled, could only wait for Alex to finish the meeting.
Half an hour later.
The door opened, Alex still radiating hostility.
He sat in his office pressing his temples: "How are things going over there, any news?"
The assistant stepped forward, voice trembling: "Mrs. Baker said whenever you return, you'll go straight to pick up the judgment that day."
Alex frowned, not yet registering: "Pick up what?"
The assistant's face fell further: "The d-divorce judgment."
Alex's deep eyes suddenly turned cold.
He'd originally thought that after a few days away on business, they could both have a way out, never expecting this woman to be so ruthless.
She'd directly contacted the Baker family lawyer privately, forcing the process through?
He laughed coldly, though the smile didn't reach his eyes: "Good, very good."
Not even willing to wait for him to return, she'd blocked off all paths.
"Book the earliest flight back home, now." Alex's face was stern.
He grabbed his suit jacket from the chair and walked out.
The assistant looked up in shock, hurrying after him: "Mr. Baker, the project here still needs your signature for confirmation, the partners are still waiting..."
"Leave everything to you." Alex coldly interrupted, "If you don't handle it well, this month's bonus is completely docked."
The assistant felt speechless.
Meanwhile that day at the Baker family manor, the atmosphere was unusually warm.
Ever since the old lady learned she was pregnant, she'd been watching over her constantly, and Susan was constantly preparing nutritious meals.
Emily felt rarely at ease.
She sat on the sofa, browsing through dress styles on her phone, a relaxed smile playing on her lips.
Soon she'd be completely free.
Bang!
The door was suddenly pushed open forcefully.
Emily looked up, slightly startled, "Why are you back? Is the project done?"
In her impression, Alex always put work first.
Nothing could ever make him return midway.
Alex sneered: "Do I need to report to you when I come back?"
Emily was speechless, too lazy to engage with him, got up to go upstairs.
However, the man's gaze first landed on her wrist—an exquisitely crafted silver chain, a delicate pendant similar to those parting gifts she'd sent out.
Alex reached out and grabbed the bracelet in his palm.
"Alex!" Emily got angry, reaching to snatch it back, "What are you doing? Give it back!"
"Ugly." Alex laughed coldly, examining the bracelet, "Don't wear such cheap things, it embarrasses the Baker family."
But his fingertips carefully traced over the bracelet, still retaining the woman's body warmth.
Emily said, "Fine, if you want to keep it, keep it. Since you're back anyway, let's go to court tomorrow morning. All procedures are complete, once we sign we're even."
She spoke lightly, as if she hadn't taken it to heart at all.
Alex's eyes darkened deeply, staring at that relaxed relief on her face about to be liberated.
Suddenly, he opened his mouth mockingly: "So eager to divorce, rushing to prepare for a new wedding? Don't worry, when the time comes I'll definitely send you a big gift."
Emily was stunned, looking confused: "Hm? What wedding, marrying whom?"
Alex closed in on her step by step, his sharp penetrating gaze falling on the table, "The wedding favors are already prepared, aren't they for your wedding with Matthew?"
On the living room table lay neatly packaged gifts.
Emily couldn't help but laugh, but her eyes were full of mockery: "Never thought Mr. Baker had such imagination. I did prepare wedding favors, but three years ago there was no chance to send them out. You never acknowledged me as your wife, the outside world doesn't even know—what are you pretending to care about now?"
Her tone was flat, yet every word pierced the heart.
Alex inexplicably felt his throat tighten.
Emily ignored him, directly went around to grab her tablet, which still showed the dress styles she'd been selecting.
Alex suppressed the dull pain in his heart, looked up and caught sight of the tablet screen: "Why are you picking dresses?"
Emily looked up, raised an elegant eyebrow, smiling relaxed and bright: "For the divorce of course, I want to look beautiful for my divorce photo. What, is that not okay?"
Suddenly, Alex's face turned completely dark, directly slamming the door as he went upstairs.
There were no more words between them.
The next morning, at the court.
"You can leave after signing."
The staff member sat behind the desk, having reviewed all the procedures.
Emily lowered her eyes, picked up the pen without hesitation and signed.
Her strokes were decisive, without a trace of hesitation.
"Your turn."
There were two copies of the agreement in total, Emily had already signed both.
Alex's brow furrowed slightly, watching her name steadily settle at the end of the agreement, his thin lips pressed tighter.
But he said nothing, completing both signatures with swift strokes.
Click!
The steel seal came down.
The staff member pushed the judgments in front of them: "Wish you both well in your separate lives."
Emily picked up her copy, didn't even look at it before stuffing it in her bag: "Alex, we're... finally divorced."
With that, she stood up and walked straight out without looking back.
Alex's eyes dimmed slightly, a trace of bewilderment flashing across his usually cold and stern face.
Emily was leaving him?
He instinctively chased after her, grabbing her slender wrist.
Emily frowned: "What?"
Alex restrained himself: "Take this."
It was a bank card, under Alex's private name.
Emily laughed coldly, directly pushing it away: "I don't want it. We're already divorced, I'm not after your family's money, and besides, the property division is already stated in the agreement."
"Divorce compensation." Alex said coldly, "You were with me for three years, don't go out there and have problems even eating, embarrassing me."
Emily was actually amused: "Fine, Mr. Baker is quite generous. These three years weren't lacking in bed, technique was poor, but the body was acceptable, I'll just consider it compensation."
After all, it was what he owed her anyway.
Alex's face instantly darkened like the bottom of a pot, words squeezing through his teeth: "Emily, who's the one crying in bed every time saying go deeper?"
Emily was too lazy to engage with him, turned around about to hail a cab.
Beep beep—
Suddenly, a white Pagani smoothly stopped by the roadside.
The man in the driver's seat pushed open the door and got out, tall and upright with a refined demeanor.
Alex's hawk-like eyes narrowed, the cold aura around him intensified, "Ha, you two really couldn't wait."
Matthew came over with flowers, "Emmie, congratulations. As for who couldn't wait, who could compare to Mr. Baker? Bringing someone into the house before even getting divorced."
His gentle and reserved tone carried a sharp edge.
