Chapter 45 Good Friend Angrily Scolds White Lotus
Susan wanted to say more, but didn't get the chance.
After a while, the black Cayenne pulled up smoothly in front of Grace's apartment building.
But Alex didn't rush to get out. His fingertips unconsciously rubbed against the steering wheel, his eyes churning with irritation he couldn't even sort out himself.
"Alex!"
Suddenly, a clear, sweet voice rang out.
Grace was standing not far away.
She recognized the luxury car immediately. "I knew you couldn't stay mad at me. Have you eaten dinner yet?"
Alex pushed the car door open and got out. The dark mood surrounding him made Grace's smile freeze a bit.
He said nothing and walked straight toward the elevator.
Grace pressed her lips together and hurried to catch up, carefully taking his arm. "Alex, are you still upset about yesterday? I didn't mean to. If Miss Johnson is angry, I'll go apologize to her, okay?"
As she spoke, her eyes filled with tears.
Alex shook off her hand. Just as he was about to enter the apartment, he paused. "When did I ever say I was going to marry you?"Grace instantly froze in place.
She stammered awkwardly, "I... I just thought we'd gotten to that point, and we were so good together before. Alex, I know you love me. Otherwise, you wouldn't have dropped everything to come find me. Don't you remember? Back in college, you said you'd marry me."
She deliberately brought up the past, looking up to observe Alex's expression.
That chiseled face was truly mesmerizing. His custom-tailored suit cost seven figures, and the air of privilege around him made Grace unable to look away.
Such an excellent man could only be hers.
But Alex frowned and fell silent for a moment. Images of his past with Grace did flash through his mind, but more than that... was Emily's determined look from earlier.
He irritably loosened his tie. "Get some rest early. Stop overthinking."
With that, ignoring Grace's shock, he simply got up to leave.
Grace panicked. "Alex, it's so late. Where are you going? Can't you stay with me..."Before she could finish, the door slammed shut.
The tender expression on Grace's face instantly vanished, her nails digging hard into her palms. "Just a three-year loveless marriage. Think you can drag this out? No way!"
She'd put in so much effort just to become the legitimate Mrs. Baker.
That woman Emily absolutely could not stand in her way!
Waves of anger surged up. Grace grabbed her phone and immediately called Emily.
Meanwhile, on the other side.
Emily was organizing design drafts. Seeing the caller ID, she frowned slightly. "What is it?"
Grace's tone was sweet. "Miss Johnson, hello. I'm so sorry to bother you this late."
"If you were really sorry, you wouldn't be calling me, would you?"
That one sentence made Grace's expression change. She almost couldn't keep up the act, then spoke with a hint of coyness. "It's like this—Alex just came to my place and saw your design draft. He said he doesn't really like it and wants you to revise it. After all, it's for our wedding rings, so we hope it can be more perfect."
Hearing this, Emily let out a mocking laugh. Alex would care about the style of wedding rings?
Back then, even her own ring was something he'd casually picked out at a mall.
Huh...
She took a silent deep breath.
No matter how much she disliked these two, the ring design came from her hands.
As a designer, she couldn't just ignore her own work.
Finally, upholding her professional ethics, Emily spoke. "Send me a summary of your design requirements."
But Grace quickly said, "Let's meet in person to discuss it. Otherwise, I'm afraid I won't explain it clearly."
"Send me the address. See you tomorrow." Emily finished and hung up directly.
She didn't want to waste more time on this.
Since the final payment had been settled, she should do her best to be thorough.
The design draft in her hands was mostly complete. Emily was about to take a break when she suddenly received a voice message from her best friend Rachel.
"Emily, come shopping with me! I found this amazing custom dress shop. Come check it out with me!" Rachel's voice was lively and cheerful, like a little sun.
Emily smiled.
After replying to the message, she mentioned she was meeting Grace tomorrow.
Unexpectedly, Rachel immediately called her. "What does that fake lotus want with you? She's definitely up to no good! No way, I don't feel safe letting you go alone. Tomorrow we'll go see her first, then go shopping!"
Emily didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but warmth flowed through her heart.
The next day, they went to the café Grace had suggested.
She was already sitting by the window waiting.
Seeing Emily, she smiled, her hand adorned with expensive jewelry resting on her belly. "Miss Johnson, you're here. Please sit."
Rachel had always disliked her act and simply rolled her eyes. A mistress pretending to be the real deal?
Suddenly, Rachel smiled. "Long time no see, Miss Miller. I didn't expect you to get better and better at putting on an act after coming back to the country."
Grace's expression stiffened. Her hand under the table unconsciously clenched. Emily had specifically brought this person to irritate her.
Rachel continued with mock surprise, covering her mouth. "Oh my, sorry about that. I'm just straightforward, not like some people with all their schemes."
"But speaking of which, didn't you go abroad because the Baker family company had problems?"
"Now that Alex is worth hundreds of times more, Miss Miller came back and latched onto him, even got pregnant with his child. Wow, you really know how to work the angles."
Rachel's expression was mocking, her words even more cutting.
Her sharp words were like knives, stabbing right into Grace's lungs.
"What nonsense are you talking!" Grace's face immediately darkened. "Alex and I truly love each other. It's not what you're saying at all."
"Truly love each other?" Rachel raised an eyebrow, her eyes growing more sarcastic. "Then is the child in your belly really Alex's?"
"You!" Grace trembled with anger, her hand unconsciously dropping from her belly, her face barely able to maintain composure.
She was furious but also guilty, unable to say a word in rebuttal.
Did Rachel know something?
Beside her, Emily tugged at her. "Rachel, forget it. Let's just get started on the design revisions."
But Rachel turned and winked at her, then delivered a finishing blow. "Grace, think about it—if Alex wanted a divorce, why would he drag it out until now?"
"He can't bear to let go of our Emmie. You're just being kept on the side, forever the mistress who can't see the light of day!"
