Chapter 124 Trust Her, Without Hesitation

Chapter 124 Trust Her, Without Hesitation

Alex lowered his gaze to look at her. His features, already sharp and European-looking, seemed even deeper now, with a hint of something meaningful.

Emily frowned slightly. "If you're not willing, forget it."

The next second, Alex immediately called his assistant.

"Hello, Mr. Baker?"

"Within twenty minutes, install hidden cameras in the old lady's room. Full encryption, access only for me and Miss Johnson. No one else gets any info. Also, have someone bring Susan over to stay with her full-time. Without permission from me or Miss Johnson, no one gets close!"

Alex's tone was cold and decisive, without a second's hesitation.

The assistant on the phone didn't dare delay and quickly agreed. "Got it, Mr. Baker. I'll handle it right away."

In just a few sentences, he took care of everything Emily had asked for.

Even more thoroughly than she expected.

Emily was caught off guard. She hadn't thought he'd agree so quickly.

She figured even if Alex sensed something off, he'd think it over a bit.

After all, Grace was now the Baker family's almost-fiancée. He'd have to give her some face.

But he didn't.

He just fully trusted her words.

That trust made Emily's heart ache unexpectedly.

Back then... he never believed a word she said.

Emily pressed her lips together and quickly pushed down the strange feeling.

Margaret lay in bed, listening to them. A flicker of relief showed in her cloudy eyes.

She blinked with effort, looking at Emily with full affection, then slowly shifting to Alex.

If she could, she'd roll her eyes.

At least he wasn't too dumb. He knew to protect her Emmie and great-granddaughter.

Half an hour later.

Grace rushed back to the room with the main doctor and experts.

She pushed the door open and froze. "What... is this?"

All the caregivers in the room had been replaced with strangers. None she knew.

They were well-trained and professional.

They stood guard at the door and on both sides, eyes cold.

What panicked her most was the little nurse she'd bribed earlier—gone, blocked somewhere!

She couldn't even get close to the bed, let alone do anything.

Grace forced down her panic and smiled. "Alex, what's going on? These caregivers... new ones? What happened to the ones I arranged? They knew how to take care of Grandma. Switching suddenly might upset her."

She tried to move toward the bed while talking.

But after one step, a new caregiver blocked her calmly. "Miss Miller, sorry. Mr. Baker said only the main experts and assigned caregivers can get close to the old lady. To avoid disturbing her rest."

"You!" Grace's face darkened, then she hid it fast.

She turned to Alex, eyes turning red. "Alex, I just want to stay and take care of Grandma. I don't mean anything else. Otherwise, if Mom asks later, she'll blame me for not doing enough."

Alex just said flatly, "Grandma just woke up and needs quiet. There are professional caregivers and Susan here. You don't need to worry. Go back for now."

What?

Susan was coming too?

Grace clenched her fists hard, nails digging into her skin. The pain couldn't cover her panic.

Susan was like the old lady—tough, wouldn't bend.

And Susan had served the old lady for years, knew her inside out. She didn't like Grace at all.

What the hell happened?

She'd only been gone half an hour, and Alex swapped all the caregivers?

Even the ones she set up were gone...

Did the old lady really say something?

Or Emily... No, no way!

She couldn't just leave. She had to stay and watch.

Grace forced a smile. "Alex, Susan being here doesn't stop me from helping Grandma. Let me stay too. It's a suite anyway, with a resting area. Don't worry about me."

Just then, the door opened again.

Susan hurried in with a simple bag.

"Mr. Baker, Miss Emily!" She rushed to the bed, held Margaret's hand, voice choking. "Old lady, you're finally awake... finally awake..."

Margaret had calmed down and blinked.

Susan got it right away. She stepped to the side, blocking in front of the old lady and keeping Grace out.

"Miss Miller, the old lady needs rest now. Too many visitors aren't good. Please go for now. I'll take care of her—you can relax."

Her words were airtight, blocking any chance for Grace to get close.

Grace ground her teeth.

She knew she couldn't stay today!

Pushing more would just make Alex dislike her even more.

She squeezed out a forced smile. "Fine then, I won't disturb Grandma's rest. Alex, let me know right away if anything happens."

She glanced at Emily, then left.

Once the door closed, Emily let out a breath. "Grandma, you're safe now. Relax. Susan, watch her closely. Call me if anything comes up."

"Don't worry, Miss Emily. I'm here!" Susan said, teary-eyed, and immediately went to get water to wipe the old lady down.

Emily stood. "Grandma's stable for now. I'll take Eleanor back first."

Alex nodded. "I'll walk you out."

Before Emily could say no, he picked up Eleanor.

The little one was sleepy, head bobbing, soft as she leaned on his shoulder. "Uncle..."

A spark lit in Alex's eyes.

This kid... relies on him this much?

Emily was quiet for a moment. "Grandma, we're heading out. We'll visit tomorrow."

They walked out of the room.

Ahead, Alex slowed down on purpose. "Drop you off at the Johnson family?"

Emily rolled her eyes. "Or go home with you?"

What kind of question was that?

But the man just raised an eyebrow. "I wouldn't mind."

Emily had nothing to say. She ignored him and hit the elevator button.

The elevator went down in silence.

Only Eleanor's steady breathing.

Emily glanced at her daughter from the corner of her eye.

Her soft little face rested on Alex's shoulder. She was fast asleep now.

Suddenly, the man's gaze landed on her. His thin lips moved, but he didn't speak. His eyes held something complex she couldn't read.

Even in the car, the air stayed quiet.

Emily stared out the window, silent.

Then Alex spoke up suddenly.

"Back then... it was my fault." His voice was rough, the first time he'd ever admitted it.

Those few words hit Emily's heart hard.
