Chapter 123 What Exactly Was Said?
Emily pursed her lips and looked away, no longer glancing over.
Margaret's gaze slowly swept across everyone, finally landing on Emily.
The moment she saw her, tears streamed down the old lady's face. "Uh uh!"
Her throat made uncontrollable "gasp-gasp" sounds, as if she wanted to say something, but due to partial paralysis, she couldn't form complete words.
Emily quickly hugged Eleanor and stepped forward. "Grandma, it's me, Emily. I'm here to see you. Eleanor is here too."
Eleanor obediently waved her little hand and said softly, "Great-grandma... Great-grandma, get better soon."
Just as Emily was about to move closer, Grace suddenly stood up.
She casually pushed Emily aside and knelt halfway by the bed. "Grandma, you're finally awake! You have no idea how worried Alex and I have been. I've been coming to the hospital every day to check up on you , just hoping you'd wake up!"
As she spoke, she gently patted the back of the old lady's hand. Her reddened eyes and trembling voice agitated the old lady. "Uh uh uh! Harm... you... get out!"
The hand that had been holding Grace tightened fiercely, the old lady's eyes full of anger and disgust. She struggled to lift her left hand but couldn't due to paralysis.
"Grandma! What's wrong? Don't get worked up, take it slow!" Alex rushed over and pressed her shoulder down.
But Margaret couldn't be calmed.
Emily's heart tightened; something was off...
Grandma wouldn't be this emotional right after just waking up.
"Grandma, don't get upset. Say it slowly, or write it down? You can type too—I brought a tablet!"
Grace narrowed her eyes. Old hag, paralyzed and still causing trouble.
She gripped the old lady's hand more tightly. "Grandma, are you too excited? It's good you're awake. If you have something to say, tell me. We'll take it slowly —no rush."
As she finished, out of sight of the others, Grace dug her nails into the old lady's wrist.
Old hag, better not blab.
Anyway, Alex and Emily wouldn't stay at the hospital forever. She would have plenty of chances to strike.
Grace positioned herself sideways, blocking Emily from the old lady and keeping them apart.
The old lady shook with rage, but her eyes became clearer.
She looked at Emily and forced out two words from her throat with all her strength. "Harm... her..."
Her voice was faint, but the meaning was clear.
Emily froze. "Grandma, what did you say?"
Grace's face changed slightly and she quickly cut in. "Grandma, did you say you're scared she'll take bad care of you? Don't worry, I'll care for you better than Miss Johnson! You just woke up—you don't know Alex and I are engaged yet, right? As your future granddaughter-in-law, it's my responsibility to look after you."
As she spoke, she signaled the nearby nurse with her eyes.
The nurse immediately stepped forward to check Margaret's blood pressure. "Old lady, Miss Miller really cares about you. She's been here often these past few days. Just relax in bed and tell us if you need anything."
Emily stood by, her doubts deepening.
Grandma's reaction just now... harm her?
Who harmed her?
Or rather, who was the real target?
Emily instinctively stared at Grace, and for some reason, a chill ran down her spine.
Alex also sensed something was wrong.
His eyes fixed on Grace's face. He didn't say anything else, only said in a low voice, "Step aside first. Let Grandma talk to Emily."
"Alex, I'm worried about Grandma too." Grace bit her lip, looking wronged. "She just woke up and needs rest. She shouldn’t get too excited."
"I said move!" Alex's voice turned completely cold.
Grace pressed her lips tightly together. "Okay, don't be mad. I'll move."
She had no choice but to let go and step back.
But the look she gave Emily and the old lady was filled with malice.
Emily took the old lady's left hand. "Grandma, it's me, Emily. What did you say just now? Are you... uncomfortable?"
The sounds she made matched those words, but her lip movements said something else entirely.
The old lady looked at her, tears flowing even more freely.
My Emmie baby gets it. She understands.
Margaret couldn't speak, so she simply blinked.
Emily's heart sank heavily.
Just as she suspected!
Grandma's coma wasn't an accident—someone had done it on purpose!
Based on her reaction, it was likely Grace.
Alex stood nearby, his brows furrowing.
The atmosphere in the room grew heavy.
Grace stood in the corner, her palms sweaty. "Um... Alex, should I go call the doctor for a full checkup? Grandma just woke up, and we haven't set the next treatment plan yet."
The old lady's reaction and Emily’s expression gave her a bad feeling.
She couldn't let anyone find any dirt on her!
Emily comforted Grandma softly. "Grandma, rest well. Eleanor and I will come visit often."
The old lady looked at her with complete trust in her eyes.
Eleanor leaned against the edge of the bed. Seeing great-grandma crying, her small face was filled with sadness. "Great-grandma, no hurt. Blow, blow, it won't hurt."
Alex stepped forward and gently patted Eleanor's head. "Eleanor, don't worry. Great-grandma will get better."
Emily slowly stood up straight. "Didn't Miss Miller say she would go call the doctor? Go ahead."
Grace froze in place.
Was she really sending her away?
Damn cheap woman, who does she think she is, ordering me around?
I'm the future Mrs. Baker!
But with Alex present, she couldn't lash out.
Grace forced a smile. "Look at me, I got so happy I forgot. I'll go right now."
She left the room, glancing back every few steps.
That old woman better not stir up trouble while I'm gone.
No, I need to hurry back.
Grace gritted her teeth and hurried to the director's office.
Back in the room, silence lingered for a moment. Emily set Eleanor down nearby so she could sit.
"Alex, I need to talk to you."
"Go ahead."
Emily took a deep breath and said clearly, "I don't trust Grace to take care of Grandma. I want to hire professional caregivers. Also, have Susan stay full-time with Grandma and install cameras in the room, but keep the cameras secret—no one else should know."
Margaret lay in bed, unable to speak but still able to hear and see.
Seeing Emily's arrangements put her mind at ease.
Alex's eyes flashed with meaning. "You think..."
Before he could finish, Emily cut in, "I don't mean anything else. I just want Grandma safe. You can draw your own conclusions about the rest."
Alex, who had reached his position in the Baker family, wasn't a pushover.
If Grace could fool him completely, he would have to be extremely foolish.
