Chapter 62 The Alpha's Plan
The quiet hum of the sanctuary felt like a fragile shell, ready to crack. Klishei sat by the window in Yeseus’s room, her gaze tracing the familiar lines of the distant mountains.
A floorboard creaked behind her. Yeseus stood in the doorway, his silhouette framed by the softer light of the hallway. He moved with a quiet intensity, his eyes, usually a vibrant blue, now shadowed with a deep, unsettling concern.
“You’re awake,” he said, his voice a low rumble. He walked to the window, standing beside her, his presence a solid, comforting weight against the sudden chill that had settled in her heart.
She did not turn. “I heard you come in.”
He looked out at the moon-drenched forest, his jaw tight. “The air is thick tonight.”
“With what?” Klishei’s voice was barely a whisper. She knew. She felt it, a distant tremor in the cosmic fabric that resonated with the power stirring within her.
He turned, his blue eyes meeting hers, holding a gravity that stole her breath. “They’re coming for you, Klishei.”
Her gaze dropped to her hands, clasped tightly in her lap. “I know.”
His head tilted, a subtle surprise softening the hard lines of his face. “You know?”
“I met one of them in town,” she confessed, the words tumbling out, laced with a tremor she couldn’t quite suppress. “A knight. Jaden. He intercepted me.”
Yeseus’s eyes narrowed, the shadows deepening. “A knight? From the Cosmos?” He already knew who it was.
She nodded, pushing away from the window, walking towards the center of the room. “He said they’ve been watching. That the balance is… off. Because of me.”
He followed her, his movements fluid, predator-like. “He tried to take you?”
“No,” she clarified, shaking her head. “Not by force. Not yet. He just… explained. About my destiny. About the king.” She paused, the memory of Jaden’s almost-kiss, his unsettling possessiveness, making her skin prickle. “And about you. About the blight.”
A muscle clenched in Yeseus’s jaw. He stopped a few feet from her, his gaze unwavering, searching hers. “What did he say?”
“That our connection accelerates it. That my power amplifies the decay.” Her voice cracked on the last word. The guilt, a suffocating blanket, wrapped around her.
He reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek. His touch, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a cruel irony. “And you believe him?”
“He said the King understands my reluctance, but the laws of the Cosmos are absolute. He said refusal leads to chaos.” She pulled away from his touch, turning her back to him, unable to bear the intensity of his gaze.
A low growl rumbled deep in Yeseus’s chest, a sound that vibrated through the floor. “They use fear. Always. The same tactics they used to separate us, to control us.”
“But what if he’s right, Yeseus?” She spun back, her eyes pleading. “What if I am slowly killing you? What if my presence here, in this world, truly causes chaos?”
He took a step closer, his hands reaching for her shoulders, pulling her gently towards him. “Klishei, my curse is mine to bear. It has been for centuries. Your presence, your love— it has awakened parts of me I thought long dead. If this is the price, then it is a price I willingly pay.”
“But I don’t want you to pay for it!” Her voice rose, raw with emotion. “I don’t want to be the reason you fade. I don’t want to be the cause of your decay.”
He pulled her into a fierce embrace, burying his face in her hair. “You are the reason I live, Klishei. Don’t you understand? You are the reason I fight.”
She clung to him, the familiar scent of woodsmoke and wild earth filling her senses, momentarily pushing away the cold dread.
“What do we do?” she whispered against his chest, her voice muffled.
“They want to take you to the Cosmos. They want to claim you. We won’t let them.”
“How?” The word felt hollow, insignificant against the might of cosmic warriors and dragon kings.
He paused, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk touching his lips. “My birthplace. The ancestral home of the Garashi Alphas. A place so steeped in wolf essence, it can drown out even the Phoenix’s light.”
Her brow furrowed. “Dirhana? Why haven’t you taken me there before?”
“The energy there is raw, untamed. But now… it might be our only defense.” He released her, walking to the ancient map unrolled on his table. His finger traced a winding path across a desolate, mountainous region.
“The land itself is saturated with Alpha energy. The wolf scent is so pervasive, so ancient, it acts as a natural cloak. It can mask your Phoenix aura, make you a ghost in the cosmic radar.”
“A ghost?” The idea was both terrifying and appealing.
“For a time. Enough time for us to prepare. To find a weakness. To understand their game.” He walked to his wardrobe, pulling out a heavy, dark cloak, thick with fur. “We leave at dawn. Quietly. We will just leave a note for Suneia and Naelyr.”
“What about Naelyr? And my grandparents?”
He held out the cloak. “This will help. It’s woven with ancient protective charms, imbued with wolf essence. It will help muffle your aura, make it harder for them to pinpoint you.”
Klishei took the cloak, its weight heavy in her hands, the fur surprisingly soft against her skin. “What if they follow us?”
“Dirhana is my territory. My scent will be a warning. And if they dare to trespass, they will face the Alpha on his home ground.” His voice was low, laced with a steel she had rarely heard. “No subtle manipulations there. Only raw, primal power.”
She looked at the cloak, then at him.
He leaned in, his lips brushing hers, a soft, tender kiss that spoke of promises and unspoken fears. “This is the only way I could think of to stop them from taking you,” he whispered against her mouth, his voice husky, “Dirhana is also a place of immense power. A place where the wolf essence is at its peak. It might just be the place where we find a way to balance the scales.”
Klishei’s heart pounded, a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Dirhana. His birthplace. A place of untamed power, of ancient wolf scents, a place where her Phoenix light would be masked, hidden. A place where the blight might accelerate, or perhaps something else entirely.
She looked at Yeseus, his eyes filled with a fierce, unwavering determination. The cosmic warriors were coming. The King of the Cosmos wanted her. And Yeseus, her Alpha, was ready to face them all, on his own ground.
