A tense atmosphere

Emerald's POV.

The air was heavy as if it were just before a storm. Every second that went by seemed to make Ivy's presence more formidable and I could feel my heartbeat quickening in my chest.

As I stood there in front of her, my fingers were shaking, and my mouth felt dry. Her arms were crossed tightly as she continued to stare at me, seemingly daring me to speak.

I said nothing, refusing to participate. To avoid any confrontation, she was eager to start; a part of me simply wanted to leave.

Ivy, on the other hand, was obviously not one to overlook things, particularly when it came to me. Her heels clicked on the chilly stone floor as she stepped forward a few paces.

It felt like she was trying to rob me of my soul by staring into my eyes. Like a sharp blade slicing through tension, her voice broke the stillness.

“Aren't you really losing it?” Ivy asked in a tone that was brimming with contempt. ”You must have started hearing voices by now. You must be too foolish to be aware of what is going on aren't you?”

With my heart pounding but my breathing steady I held my ground. “I don't want trouble.”

No matter what games she was playing I didn't want to be involved.

However, I also wasn't going to stand by and allow her to make fun of me in this way. I tried not to make a fuss when I said I'm not here to cause trouble but I couldn't help but show a hint of frustration.

I was unable to give up. No, not yet.

The hollow derisive sound of Ivy's laughter annoyed me. She repeated “Not here to cause trouble?” as if the notion were absurd.” Emerald, you are nothing more than a distraction. You think that everything will be alright if you just waltz in here? Additionally, you and your wretched infant will soon leave this pack. Return to the dirt hole you emerged from.”

Every single one of her words hit me like a slap in the face. I didn't know why I allowed it to have such a strong impact on me.

Perhaps it was the way she spoke as if she already had the pack in her grasp. Perhaps Ivy's belief that she was in charge of everything and the fact that I felt unwelcome here served as a reminder.

In an attempt to gather myself, I stepped back. “Ivy, I don't want to fight with you,” I said quietly, barely raising my voice above a whisper but being firm. I'm not interested in any of this. All I'm trying to do is keep my head down and be by myself.”

Ivy, though, was not having any of it. Her grin grew as she shook her head.

“You are already in this fight, my love, so why would you fight me? regardless of your desire for it.” Her eyes glinted with malice as she took another step closer. “I don't fear you or your slight threats. You will soon realize how out of place you are in this place. Out on the streets with you and your little dog.”

The words were still burning and I could feel the heat rising in my chest as my body tensed.

Even though my fingers balled into fists at my sides, I controlled myself because I knew that no matter how hard she tried to agitate me, I couldn't allow it to affect me. I reiterated raising my voice a bit. I don't want trouble.

“Ivy, I don't want to be involved in your game. You are wasting your time with me regardless of what you are attempting to prove.”

Moving closer she spoke in a low voice that was no less venomous than a whisper. She spit out “You think this is a game? My entire life, I have strived to be here by Caden's side. Do you think you are unique? Do you believe Caden will allow you to obstruct him when he has everything to lose? You believe you can just walk in weak and pregnant and take everything I've worked for?” Her words were more powerful than I had anticipated and I flinched.

Hearing her say those things and portraying me as a danger to all I valued was painful. However, I couldn't back down no matter how much she agitated me.

I was unable to show her how hurt I was. “I'm not trying to take anything from you.” I said, my voice becoming more steady.”My purpose is not to fight with you or steal anything from anyone. All I want is to live my life and protect my child. That's that.”

Ivy's expression changed her eyes narrowing and her face contorting into a smirk as she leaned slightly closer. “Don't you think it's that simple?” she muttered. “You believe that playing the victim is as easy as waltzing in. You're mistaken though. I'll make sure that nobody stands in my way including you. And nobody will even remember your name after you're gone.”

Even though her remarks made me shudder, I refused to back down. I refused to let her break me. “Ivy please.” I said attempting to sound calm but letting a hint of desperation show.”This is not what I want. I am not here to engage in combat. I am not the adversary.”

The sound of her laugh chilled my blood with its cruelty and wickedness. “You're the enemy, Emerald, that's for sure. You simply haven't realized it yet.”

I started talking in an attempt to reassure her that I wasn't a danger and that I wasn't here to add to my already existing problems. However, a voice behind us interrupted me before I could say anything more.

“What's happening here?” We both froze when the deep authoritative voice spoke.

The hairs stood on end on the back of my neck as I felt the tension in the air rise. Ivy's eyes darted to me and back to where the voice had been coming from.

There was a brief moment of surprise on her face,, but she quickly covered it up with a coo,l, unconcerned expression. Slowly my breath caught in my throat as I turned.

Whoever had interrupted us wasn't going to let this go unanswered. Then, the thick, oppressive silence between Ivy and me broke, and I found myself standing there, not knowing what to do.

Without a response, the question lingered in the air. I couldn't get rid of the feeling that whatever was going to happen would completely alter everything as I stood there torn between the quiet and the impending uncertainty.
