An Intimate Meeting
Emerald's POV.
I walked with a lightness of step that I had not experienced in days as I left Caden's quarters. I was more reassured by his words than I had anticipated.
He had vowed never to pick Ivy over me, not for the council or the pack at any cost. For the first time in what seemed like an eternity, I experienced a glimmer of hope.
I took the long way back to my room wandering the corridors. The mansion's quiet was strangely reassuring.
It allowed me to calm down and take in everything that had transpired. Lena, however,, was always nearby.
As usual, she showed up when I least expected it. There she is, Lena jokingly remarked, emerging next to me grinning.
“I see that you made it through the storm.”The sound was so free and light that I couldn't help but laugh.
“I guess I have. Caden wasn't as bad as I thought,” I said. My voice was lighter than before but still a little shaky. Putting her arm through mine, Lena's presence was always soothing and calming.
“Naturally he wasn't. The two of you are a perfect match. Your wolves? They are almost the same.” Even though her tone was playful I couldn't help but smile because of the genuineness that permeated it.
I tried not to think about Caden and said “I don't know about perfect. He is the only person who gives me a sense of security though. Like as long as he's around everything will be fine.”
The look on Lena's face softened.”That's the only thing that counts. Don't allow anyone or anything to cast doubt on that.”
As we walked I rested my head on her shoulder. I needed her strength now more than ever because it had always been a pillar of support in my life.
Mere presence served as an anchor to keep me grounded amidst everything that was looming over us. We continued to walk while discussing trivial topics that, to me, were important but hardly significant in the big picture.
The lighthearted discussion served as a pleasant diversion from the burden that persisted in my thoughts. For Lena's ability to effortlessly pull me out of my spiraling thoughts and her ability to always know when I needed her most, I was incredibly grateful.
With a gleam of mischief in her eyes, Lena asked, “Have you heard about the new training regimen they are starting?”.
I arched an eyebrow.”I don't really enjoy the training you know. I'll let the warriors handle that.”
She gave a snort. “The sight of all those muscular, sweaty men will definitely keep you entertained for a while, but I didn't say you had to join in.”
I laughed as Lena and I made jokes about the warriors and their absurd training regimens temporarily putting my worries aside.
But the feeling of lightness was short-lived. Without any prior notice, Lena's form started to fade and flicker.
Without a single word, she simply disappeared as fast as she had begun. My heart skipped a beat and I came to a sudden stop.
There was a heavy silence in place of the laughter that had been in the air. Immediately, my instincts were on high alert, and I started to feel uneasy.
I wasn't by myself. My gaze landed on a figure in front of me just as Lena vanished.
I initially assumed it might be a servant or even a stray visitor but then I noticed her. Ivy. Her expression was unreadable as she stood with her arms folded in front of her.
She remained still and said nothing. She simply blocked my path, seemingly waiting for me to say something or daring me to do so first.
My throat went suddenly dry as I swallowed. Though my mind was racing I couldn't find the right words.
What am I supposed to say? Ivy had a chilly stare and slightly narrowed eyes as if she were assessing me. Although I couldn't tell if she was upset or just unconcerned I could sense the heavy tension between us.
Neither of us was willing to break the uncomfortable silence as we stood there and stared at one another. Ivy assumed a stiff posture crossing her arms over her chest as if to demonstrate her power and seize control of the circumstance.
I knew this would not be a calm encounter but I had no idea what she wanted. As my mind swirled, I tried to think of something to say, but nothing came to mind.
I wasn't sure whether I was afraid of upsetting her or if I just didn't give a damn enough to answer her challenge. In any case, I experienced a peculiar fusion of curiosity and frustration.
Why was she standing here in front of me in this manner and what did she want? With my heart hammering loudly in my chest, I took a tiny step back, but Ivy remained motionless. Her eyes never left mine as she remained motionless.
She finally said, “Well, well, well, Emerald,” in a cool, collected voice, but I could hear the underlying edge in her voice. “We must have a conversation.”
I took a while to respond because I was still taking in the situation. Ivy's aura demanded attention in a way that I wasn't sure I was prepared for, and her presence was oppressive.
It didn't seem to matter anymore what I had heard about her or what people had been saying about her goals. Her energy, which crackled between us like static and threatened to break, was all that mattered at this particular moment.
I remained silent in answer. With each second that went by my body tensed as I stood there motionless as stone.
She waited watching me without pushing or moving. It was an odd moment, a moment of unsaid tension.
My head was racing with potential questions and questions I wasn't sure how to pose. Was this a warning or something else entirely? I knew there was something in Ivy's eyes that hinted at a bigger scheme, something I had not yet deciphered because she wasn't the type to just watch aimlessly.
But I wasn't yet prepared to give in. One thing was clear to me even though I couldn't understand what this moment meant:
Ivy wouldn't let me get away with it. I took another slow step backward, feeling my heart rate increase, but Ivy spoke again before I could catch my breath.
“You should avoid Caden, Emerald in my opinion. For personal benefit.”Her words clouded my thoughts like a thick fog, but before I could react, she pivoted on her heel and left her figure slipping into the darkness.
I was in a state of shock as I stood there, her words echoing in my head. I wasn't sure if it was a warning or a threat.
All I knew was that there was an absolutely deafening silence that persisted after she left. Why did it feel like my world was about to change again? What had just transpired, and what was Ivy planning? Though my mind was still spinning, I forced myself to swallow, but the empty hallways around me did not hold the answers.
For the time being, all I had left were questions and a strong feeling of unease. It was only the beginning of the tension between Ivy and me.
