Stormy POV
“Don’t stop!” Hazel yelled.
“I can’t keep going, they busted the back tyres.”
Xavier kept going for as long as possible, but with the pace the wolves were going at, they could cause us to crash into a tree.
“I’m going to stop the car, and you girls are going to shift and run like hell! I don’t give a shit where you go. The deal ends here, and I’m going my separate way.”
“Oh, such a gentleman,” Hazel murmured. “Wait, Stormy, you can’t shift.”
I stared at the vile that would break my curse.
This wasn’t how I wanted to try a very powerful potion!
Xavier parked the car. “See ya’ girls!”
He jumped out of the car seconds later. The wolves outside roared furiously.
Hazel jumped. “It feels safer in here!”
“Maybe they’ll just take us back to the asylum?”
“We can’t go back. We have to run!”
I nodded. I forced my stiff limbs to jump out after Hazel. My friend shifted into her wolf instantly.
“Stormy!”
“Alex?” I gasped.
It was dark, but I recognised his scent and voice. The fear of the chasing wolves was gone.
“Stop, I found her,” Alex called.
He sounded closer.
“Is this your hunting party?” I said into the darkness.
The sound of his boots crushing the twigs got closer. Suddenly, he was in front of me, holding my face.
“Damn it, Hurricane. What are you doing all the way out here?”
I laughed with tears in my eyes. “I don’t know. I was in the mood for an adventure.”
“We took down every car that came out of the asylum. If only I knew you had your own escape plan.”
“You didn’t shift, though,” I said.
He nodded. “I couldn’t risk hurting you.”
“What if I tell you I’ve got the solution to both our problems?” I winked.
“Can you two wait until we set up camp before you get comfortable?” Ryan barked.
I chuckled and wrapped my arms around my mate’s body. He smelled like home. He stroked my hair and breathed me in. I instantly shoved him back.
“Don’t do that!”
“Don’t act like you weren’t sniffing me.”
“You don’t know where I’ve been. I’ve been in a lab and a secret underground tunnel.”
He wrapped his arms around me and cradled me in his arms.
“I missed you, Hurricane.”
Thankfully, Hazel hadn’t run off without me. She sat in her wolf form, watching Alex and me reconnect.
“Do you want to get out of this uniform?” Alex asked.
A fire crackled meters away from us while Alex’s team set up their tents for the night. First thing in the morning, we were going back to Henry Pack.
“Alex… there are people all around us.”
“I have a spare shirt, Stormy.”
“You just want to see me naked.”
“I can’t deny that. Did they hurt you, Hurricane?”
I shook my head. “I met my dad though…”
“Salazar?”
I curled closer to him and sighed. I explained how Salazar had a twin named Montez who’d been keeping my mother safe for years.
“I told him about our predicaments… he said he could help. One vile for you. One to make me a normal wolf and to cure your deep injury.”
Alex stared at me, bewildered. “I’ve searched for a cure for years, and you magically bring it up?”
“It comes with a catch,” I said, biting my bottom lip.
“Of course it does. Nothing comes easy, does it?”
“It’s still a chance,” I said optimistically.
“The last chance I was I was told to find my fated mate, and it turned out I didn’t have one. I kind of still don’t believe that.”
A lump formed in my throat. “So, you still want to find your fated mate?”
He turned to me and grinned. “That’s not what I mean, Hurricane. I don’t believe fate didn’t have a mate for me when I have you. I can’t imagine my life without you.”
“Do you want to take the cure?”
“I’m more worried about you. Are you sure you can trust Montez?”
“Alex, he could have killed me a long time ago. I’m going to take it.”
“Wait, let me have my first, just in case something goes wrong, you’re not going to take yours, okay?”
I opened my mouth to protest, but I was too slow. He grabbed the tube, opened the lid and finished it. He tossed the tube aside.
“You didn’t let me tell you about the side effect!” I burst out.
“What is it?”
“You lose your sense of smell.”
“Me or my wolf?!”
“I should have asked him to be specific on that part,” I said, chewing my bottom lip.
Suddenly, Alex groaned and rushed to a tree.
“Are you okay?”
He hurled his guts out.
Oh my gosh, I hope I didn’t just poison my mate.
“Alex?” I whispered.
“Fuck, Stormy! What is that shit?”
I cringed. “Did it work?”
“How the hell am I supposed to know?” He barked, wiping his mouth clean.
I shrugged. “Try shifting.”
He held my stare. I hoped this worked, or else I’d be forced to shift before the full moon, and we didn’t know how my human body would react to that.
“Please try it. I-I I’ll be fine.” The truth is, I didn’t know.
“If it hurts, tell me to stop, okay?”
I nodded.
Alex removed his shirt, and suddenly it was very hot out here. His pants came off next, followed by his underwear.
Oh gosh…
Luckily, the others were far enough from us.
Alex’s eyes changed to bright neon red. He threw his head back as his bones cracked and his limbs realigned themselves. I felt something inside me snap. Like a rope on two ends. My hand went to my middle where I felt a deep sense of loss.
I turned to Alex he was already half wolf.
“You can do it! It’s working,” I squealed.
Before long, Alex was a fully ferocious black wolf with eyes I loved so much. He sniffled and walked towards me.
“You did great. I felt the spell break. Can you smell me?”
He looked at me before looking away. “I guess that means no,” I sighed.
“Well, it’s my turn to shift, huh?”
Alex shed his wolf skin and towered over me.
“You don’t have to take the cure. I love you as the Lunar wolf you are.”
“There are still people who want to kill me because I’m a Lunar wolf. My purpose in life was to die, remember?”
“Fuck, I forgot about that. I don’t want you to die right now.”
“I won’t! I might throw up like you.”
It was my turn to drink the potion. It was thick, and it scratched my throat on the way down. I gagged, but forced myself to keep it down. It tasted like rotten earth and fermented fruits. Aside from the horrible taste, I was still standing.
“I’m okay.”
“You have to shift. It’s the only way to know if the curse is broken.”
I nodded.
“You’ll have to give me a strip tease, Hurricane.”
“Very funny, Alex.”
I reached for my shirt when my vision blurred suddenly.
“Whoa.”
My shoulders felt like a bunch of bricks had landed on them, and my legs were jelly. I couldn’t support myself anymore.
“Alex, I—” my speech slurred.
“Stormy?”
I dropped before he could touch me.
“Babe!”
Alex hovered over me, but his image was fading fast. Everything faded into blackness.
