Chapter 54 The Calm Before Ardan’s Legacy
The next morning dawns soft and pale, as if the sky is trying to apologize for everything it witnessed the night before.
Blackthorn is unusually peaceful—
students laughing in courtyards,
teachers straightening frames on the walls,
the cafeteria buzzing with the routine chaos of real life.
It’s almost like the world didn’t shift.
Almost.
Anil walks between Cael and Lucien down the hallway.
Cael keeps close to her side, his wing brushing her back now and then like reassurance.
Lucien walks on the other side, posture relaxed but eyes scanning everything.
He’s pretending to be bored.
He’s actually in high alert.
Anil clutches her notebook tightly, keeping her head down as whispers follow them.
“Did you see the east wing yesterday?”
“I heard an angel fell. Literally fell.”
“Wasn’t there a shadow storm last night?”
“Did you SEE those lights?”
“Something’s happening at Blackthorn…”
She lets the noise wash over her.
The normal world feels distant now—
lighter somehow,
fragile in a way she didn’t see before Ardan’s goodbye.
Cael places a hand on her lower back.
“You okay?”
She nods.
“I think so.”
Lucien snorts.
“She’s not okay. But she’s functioning, and that’s a win.”
Anil gives him a tired smile.
They step into the courtyard.
The trees sway gently.
Birds chatter loudly, oblivious to the shadow-storm that twisted the world last night.
For a moment—
just a moment—
things feel normal.
Breathable.
Then Cael stops suddenly.
Anil looks up at him.
“What is it?”
Cael’s eyes narrow slightly, scanning the sky.
Lucien follows his gaze.
“Oh hell, is this about to be dramatic again?”
Cael shakes his head slowly.
“No. Nothing’s coming. Nothing’s wrong.”
He hesitates.
“But something feels… changed.”
Anil’s stomach tightens.
“Ardan?”
Cael nods once.
“He’s… farther now.”
Lucien smirks.
“Good. Let him do his dramatic wanderer phase somewhere else.”
Cael doesn’t smile back.
“It’s not distance,” he murmurs.
“It’s direction.”
Anil’s heart stutters.
“What direction?”
But Cael shakes his head.
“I can’t tell yet. His presence is faint and controlled. He’s blocking us out.”
Lucien whistles.
“Advanced. Love that for him.”
Anil looks down at her feet, voice small.
“Do you think he’s shutting us out on purpose?”
Cael doesn’t answer immediately.
Lucien does.
“Oh, sweetheart, absolutely.
New identity, new powers, new emotional style—
he’s not exactly texting group updates.”
Anil sighs.
“Does it mean he doesn’t want anything to do with us anymore?”
Cael steps closer, gently lifting her chin.
“No,” he whispers.
“It means he doesn’t want his old identity to interfere with who he’s becoming.”
Lucien shrugs.
“It’s like when you rebrand. He’s in his villain-to-be chrysalis era.”
Anil actually laughs softly.
Cael smiles faintly.
They continue walking.
A breeze rustles the leaves overhead.
Soft.
Normal.
Human.
Anil looks up at the sky, no storm, no shadow-wings, no silver eyes staring back.
But…
something in the air still feels different.
Weighted with possibility.
Lucien notices her expression.
“Thinking about him?”
Anil nods.
Cael wraps his fingers around hers.
“What part?”
She swallows.
“His promise.”
Lucien groans.
“Oh great, the reincarnation vow. So romantic. So terrifying.”
Cael’s voice is softer.
“He won’t break it.”
Anil looks between them.
“Does that scare you?”
Lucien answers instantly.
“Oh yeah. Terrifying. One hundred percent. Ten out of ten threat energy.”
Cael’s answer is quieter.
“It concerns me,” he admits.
“But not because of us.”
Anil tilts her head.
“Then why?”
Cael sighs.
“Because when he returns…
we don’t know who he’ll be.”
Lucien crosses his arms.
“And we don’t know what he’ll want.”
Anil touches her chest gently.
“But he’ll remember us.”
Cael nods once.
“He will.”
Lucien mutters,
“And memory doesn’t equal mercy.”
Anil hugs her notebook tighter.
The bell rings in the distance.
Students scatter.
Normal life moves on.
But the three of them remain standing in the courtyard, caught in a moment that doesn’t belong to the rest of the school.
A moment suspended between what was…
and what’s coming.
Cael reaches out and tucks a strand of hair behind Anil’s ear.
“No matter what happens in the future…
you won’t face it alone.”
Lucien smirks.
“Yeah, yeah. We’ll be here. The chaotic gay angel duo and your emotional support hybrid.”
Cael elbows him.
Anil leans into Cael’s side.
“I don’t want to be afraid,” she whispers.
Cael kisses the top of her head.
“Then don’t be. Fear isn’t your burden.”
Lucien nods.
“Ardan’s story will cross ours again.
But the sequel is his journey.
Not yours. Not ours.
His.”
Anil breathes out slowly.
The wind picks up—just a little—
warm,
soft,
almost like a farewell…
Or a hello.
Cael whispers:
“Ardan has left the world we knew.”
Lucien adds:
“And he’s entering a world we haven’t seen yet.”
Anil looks up at the sky.
“Then I hope it’s a world that doesn’t break him.”
Cael squeezes her hand.
Lucien looks away.
And the sun pushes through the clouds—
a final moment of peace
before everything changes.
