Chapter 53 The Aftermath of a Goodbye

Chapter 53 The Aftermath of a Goodbye
For a long time after Ardan vanishes, none of them move.

The room feels hollow.

Like something powerful just pulled its soul out of the air and took it with him.

Anil’s breaths come in small, uneven waves.
Her hands shake.
Her throat tightens.

Cael sits beside her immediately—
not touching her yet,
but close enough that she can feel his warmth.

Lucien paces the room, wings twitching restlessly, muttering curses under his breath.

“You good?” Lucien asks suddenly, stopping beside her.

It’s blunt.
But the concern underneath is real.

Anil wipes her cheeks with the back of her hand.

“No,” she whispers honestly.
“I don’t think I am.”

Lucien sighs, running both hands through his hair.
“Yeah. Fair.”

Cael reaches out slowly, brushing a trembling curl from her face.

“You don’t have to pretend,” he murmurs.
“Not with us.”

Anil closes her eyes.

“I wasn’t prepared,” she whispers.
“For goodbye like that.”

Cael nods softly.

“None of us were.”

Lucien sits on the table and stares at the floor.

“Look,” he starts reluctantly, “I know he said all that soft, emotional stuff, but—”

“Lucien,” Cael warns.

“No, let me finish.” Lucien sits forward, elbows on his knees.
“He meant what he said. That wasn’t manipulation. That was closure.”

Anil’s chest tightens.

Closure.

The word hurts more than the goodbye.

Cael rests a gentle hand over hers.
“He didn’t blame you.”

“I know,” she whispers.
“But that doesn’t make it easier.”

Lucien snorts.
“Newsflash: heartbreak sucks. Even for ex-angels.”

Anil lets out a quiet, breathy laugh—
the kind that isn’t really laughter at all.

Lucien softens.

“Hey,” he says quietly.
“He’s not gone forever. He’s… recalibrating.”

Cael sighs.
“That’s one way to put it.”

Anil looks between them.

“What do you think he’s doing right now?”

Cael answers immediately.

“Rebuilding.”

Lucien tilts his head.
“And plotting.”

Anil frowns.
“Plotting what?”

Lucien shrugs.
“His future. His identity. His vibe. And maybe who he’s going to punch first when he returns.”

Anil’s heart twists.

Cael gives Lucien a tired look.

“Can you not scare her?”

Lucien gestures around the room.
“She’s not scared. She’s grieving. Big difference.”

Anil blinks at him.

Lucien rolls his eyes.
“What? I can be emotionally literate when I want to.”

Cael smiles faintly.

Anil takes a shaky breath.

“What if he comes back angry?”

Lucien snorts.
“Sweetheart, he already came back angry. That was the calm version.”

Cael shakes his head.

“He wasn’t angry,” he says softly.
“He was resolved.”

Anil looks at him.
“What’s the difference?”

Cael’s expression darkens.

“Anger burns.
Resolve sharpens.”

Lucien nods thoughtfully.
“Resolve kills things without yelling first.”

Anil shivers.

Cael cups her cheek gently, grounding her.

“Whatever Ardan becomes, he won’t be your enemy—not truly. His love won’t allow it.”

Lucien raises a finger.
“But we—” He gestures between himself and Cael. “—might be on his ‘to-adjust’ list.”

“Adjust?” Anil echoes.

Lucien grins grimly.
“It’s like ‘revenge,’ but fancier.”

Cael groans.
“Lucien—please stop talking.”

Anil pulls her knees to her chest, hugging them tightly.

“I never wanted this,” she whispers.
“I never wanted anyone to get hurt.”

Cael moves closer, sitting directly beside her.

“You didn’t hurt him,” Cael says softly.
“You opened a wound he already had.”

Lucien nods.
“His whole existence was a wound. You didn’t cause it.”

Anil looks down.
“But I made it bleed.”

Cael gently lifts her chin.

“And you let him close it.
With honesty.
Not lies.
Not pity.”

She blinks tears away.

“And now?”

Cael smiles softly.

“And now he gets to heal however he chooses.”

Lucien crosses his arms.

“And we get to brace for the sequel.”

Anil actually laughs weakly at that.

Then her smile fades.

“What if he comes back… wrong?”

Lucien raises a brow.
“Define ‘wrong.’”

Anil hesitates.
“Cruel. Cold. Heartless. Lost. Twisted.”

Cael slides his hand into hers.

“If he comes back broken,” Cael says firmly,
“we’ll help him.”

Lucien adds,
“If he comes back dangerous, we’ll stop him.”

Anil nods slowly.

“And if he comes back different?”

Both angels fall silent.

And that silence says everything.

Finally, Cael answers quietly:

“Then we learn the new him.”

Lucien sighs dramatically.
“And hope he doesn’t immediately try to murder me.”

Anil curls into Cael’s side, tucking her head against his shoulder.

He wraps his wings around her—
a soft cocoon of warmth and protection.

Lucien stays close, arms crossed, pretending he’s not part of the embrace.

But he doesn’t leave.

Minutes pass.

Then Cael whispers:

“Anil?”

She lifts her head slightly.

“We’re going to be okay,” he says softly.
“All three of us. We’ll figure out whatever comes next.”

Lucien grins.
“And if Ardan shows up with dramatic villain music in the background, we’ll handle that too.”

Anil wipes her tears one last time.

And for the first time since Ardan’s goodbye—

she believes them.
