CHAPTER 9 – THE ONE WITH OLD SONGS 1.3
I really don't plan on telling them that my boss strangled me. Especially to mom. I'm sure she'll be hurt if she hears that. And even to Luna. This guy is overprotective of me. I don't know what he'll think of doing to Thera when he finds out what she's doing.
Luna doesn't want to rush Thera...
I don't even know why I don't want to rush in even though he really deserves it.
"Hey, Sky. You're being too obvious. I wish you'd just put on concealer." Riley wasn't done teasing her.
That's why I injured him there and then put concealer on his wound.
"Just tell us, son, okay? No matter what you're hiding, tell us so we can be updated on your life. We've only been together once, and then you're still hiding from us," my mother said.
"You're really terrible. Poor Mykel. It must be so stressful to catch that serial killer."
I glared at Riley after she said that. She was literally getting annoyed by what she was saying. But I also found what she said as an opportunity to change the topic.
"Speaking of, is there any update on the serial killer, Luna?" I asked, which made Luna stop slicing the potatoes on her plate.
"Sows! Change the topic." Riley said, which I really didn't want to ignore.
"Besides, Riley, I'll call a car myself to take you to your place." I threatened her, but she didn't seem to be affected because she still had that annoying smile on her face.
That's how he is. He's so annoying. I'll definitely get even with him.
"We have a new discovery that could help catch the serial killer."
We all looked at Luna when she answered my question.
"What did you discover? Do you have any suspects?" Mom asked.
"No aunt yet. But we already have an idea about the killer's gender. At first, Mykel didn't want to believe it. But when we both looked into the past crimes, the possibility increased that this serial killer we caught... was a woman." he said seriously.
Woman? The moonlight lilac?
We all remained silent. Riley also seemed to be thinking about what Luna had said. Even I was worried about my mother. The crimes committed in that serial killer were so brutal. The possibility of the killer being a woman makes it more terrifying. That's one hell of an angry woman in order for her to do such things. But why?
And because none of us spoke up. Luna continued her story. "Because Mykel and I think the killer is a woman. We are slowly starting to get an idea of her motive. Two possibilities. The victims, they all have records of sexual abuse or actual rape. To create such a person who seems so full of anger at the way he killed, there must be a deep reason. But we only see two possible root causes..." Luna stated.
"Either someone she loves got sexually abused, or she experienced it herself." it's still attached.
"He might be looking for a specific person who did that very shameless thing to him. That's why he singles out all criminals with a history of sexual abuse or rape. Or maybe, he suffered it at the hands of someone and because he can't find forgiveness in his heart, he kills everyone he knows who did that. A mass revenge," Luna continued her story.
"Hurt people, hurt people."
Their eyes landed on me at the same time when I said those words.
If Luna's conclusion is correct, then the serial killer must have gone through a lot to commit these crimes. Even though his crimes are so heinous, I can't help but feel sympathy for him. If that's the root and motive of his crimes, it's sad to think about.
Usually, when we feel too much pain, there are people around us who serve as our anchors. Those people help us from getting too dark and from entirely losing ourselves. So I wonder, are people like moonlight lilac, why do they get to this point because they don't have anyone to lead? It's like a single person fighting a big war without any ally.
That's why you really can't judge a person. We can never underestimate someone's pain because we don't know their battle.
"But even so. Whatever his reason, it's still not right to kill another person. The people he killed also have families. What if the victim left behind a child, and then his child can't accept what happened and that also ends up on a bad path? Right? Taking revenge only breeds more revenge," mom commented.
"That's deep, aunt." Riley reacted. "That's right, he's taking the law into his own hands. I wish he'd just let the law punish those people." she added.
"But our justice system is unfair." was not my own response to Riley's statement.
Because of that, they looked at me and then at Luna. I also stared at Luna. I don't know why my mouth was spontaneously releasing words that should have been in my mind. It had slipped my mind that this friend of mine was a law enforcement officer who was working hard to solve cases.
"Sorry." I quickly apologized to Luna.
I was expecting her to get annoyed with my comment about the justice system, but she only smiled at me. "You didn't lie though." he answered my sorry.
"It's not always unfair, but it's unfair to many. I'm not going to be biased. I thought that too when I first realized the killer's motive. But, there are still law enforcement officers who are doing everything they can to keep things in order and prevent the escalation of such crimes. But those who just use their positions to benefit others will never go away," he added.
I nodded slowly because of what Luna said. She's right. People like that will never disappear. No matter what field. The only problem is, even the police have them. The ones you expect to protect you.
