Chapter 58

Malia POV

‘That is a horrible idea.’

‘They are werewolves, they aren’t ordinary humans, they are going to be ok. We can’t afford to know where we are taking them.’

I turned to face Belinay swiftly, disbelief written all over, taking my body in a trembling embrace.

‘She’s my sister. She’s your half. What is wrong with you?’

‘She’s still fragile. And with me by her side, she will heal even faster than an ordinary werewolf.’ She shrugged, avoiding my gaze, which was totally out of character.

‘A car crash can be deadly… we are not in a game for the Goddess’ sake.’ I huffed, as we continued to trail the car, running with the pack.

‘I know.’

‘Malia, we don’t have many solutions.’ stated Sheila, sternly, as I kept pacing in the back of her mind as she ran along Belle.

I let down my arms, defeated. It was not often Sheila disagreed with me. I took the hit in silence, and retreated, eaten by worries and doubts.

I felt something crack in my soul a few moments ago, so did Belle. My sister, my twin, the love of my life was within a range from us. That’s how we knew. That’s what screwed up our plan. How could we attack a domain safely with Bella in it? And I was sure she wouldn’t be alone. We had to think and act fast, before they got there. With everything that's happened, I wouldn’t be able to concentrate with Bella close.

So did Belle, apparently, as she proposed to literally create a car crash to stop their progress. For all I know she was a cool, poised, and reasonable wolf. What the hell has taken her to think so irrationally? Even Sheila…

‘You are letting your fears take over. Stop it. It’s too late. They are in motion.’

We stopped as a group of wolves detached from the running pack and dived towards the road. They were quick, well-trained warriors, and would be fine. I hoped. Silently praying, I watched as they cut in front of the speeding vehicle, which took a sharp turn to avoid them. Success, they avoided them, but kept driving.

The wolves took a more offensive tactic, coming back towards our position, some cutting in front, while others pounded on the vehicle, forcing them to lower their speed, but it wasn’t enough. With the impact and the speed, and the last wolf jumping over, pushing on the top of the car, just on the edge, creating the imbalance needed for the car to switch stance on two wheels only. Then on its side, and then went rolling down the side of the road, the sound of the steel carcass screeching, losing its shape, compacting here and there. The sound of the crash only to be covered by the cries and shouting. I couldn’t bear the sight of that spectacle.

A nudge on Sheila’s flank brought me back to reality, grounding me painfully into her mind.

‘We need your help. Sarabella and a guy are with us. But the last one, a petite woman, we can’t move her.’

I knew who she was talking about instantly. Belinay was mentioning Clemencia. The guy must be Kylon then. Where was Jasper though? He wouldn’t dare to leave Bella’ side… That was odd.

Sheila letting me take over, I rushed where the car landed, in pieces. It smelled horrible, smoke was burning my eyes. I looked frantically left and right, trying to catch a glimpse of a potential fire, and explosion. I catched the expression of Belinay that just shook her head and I breathed again. Relieved, I slowly approached the small body laying on the ground.

It seemed that she crawled on her own strength.

‘We can’t move her.’

That was the only statement of Belle, and I doubted it was an ignorant one. But she stayed silent going further. She almost seemed hesitant, scared? There was a shift in her glow. I was about to ask her what it was all about, but a soft but raspy voice broke the silence before I could.

Asking if everyone was safe, that was the selfless Clemencia for you. I scoffed and tried to strengthen my voice, for it to not let my worries slip from my heart and fall upon her. She blacked out but before her eyes flipped in their holes, a confused expression had the time to spark her face.

“What do we do now? We have to wait, right?” I whispered to Belle who came and rubbed her shoulder against mine, in such a delicate way I could almost not feel it.

She nodded and we stayed silent for a long moment before rushing back to their side.
