Forty-eight

Maisie woke up to noise coming from outside the door of Zach's room she moved slowly to the door hearing snippets of the conversation going on outside the room.

“Don't be silly. The whole family cannot be excluded from the visitation list. He was not even awake long enough for him to approve of that " an angry male voice said.

“Yes, this is the work of that girl of his. I don't understand why he removed Jeffery and replaced him with her.” A woman's voice said, and Maisie knew that she couldn't hide behind the nurse again.

She opened the door of the room and came out as all the arguments from Zach's family members came to a halt when they saw her. She closed the door behind her as she turned to face the family. “Yes, how can I help you?”

"You cannot keep us away from him. This is insane, I mean we understand that you were hysterical at first and that is why we left but this time you are more in control of your emotions.” Zach's father said.

“Yes, I am but I still refuse to let you all in. I will allow that when Zach wishes to see you but until then I am afraid that I can't let you guys in.”

“You are acting like such a self-important bitch. You are nothing. I suggest you let us see him now.” Vivi sneered at Maisie and although Maisie would like nothing more than to get into exchanging words with the bitch, she knew that she would not be looked at in a pleasant light.

Maisie took a deep breath. “Zach is fine. When he wakes, he will do a physical examination and then he can go home if he wants but as long as he is still sleeping, I retain the right to allow whoever I deem fit to see him.”

“And why are you keeping us out. What standard of yours did we fail to pass?”

The one about me not trusting you as far as I should throw you. “Pardon me sir, but he was poisoned at your party. The one you forced him to attend. I am sorry but I prefer Zach alive and don't accuse me of not having his best wishes at heart.” Maisie said then added a dig when she couldn't just let it go like that. “After all, I am not the one who left him for his brother while he was in a coma.”

“Hey!” Jeffery's mother complains.

“I am sorry I shouldn't have said that. It was childish of me.” Maisie apologized.

“You need to let us see our son.” Zach’s father thundered.

“I can't do that.” Maisie said.

“How are we even sure that the power of attorney is even real.” Jeffery asks.

“I have a copyright here.” Betty said behind the group as they all turned to look at her.

“what are you doing here.” Vivi asked as she shifted closer to her fiancé.

“What are you doing here.” Betty asks back as she handed a letter to Zach's father.

“I have the right to be here. I am family.” Vivi stuttered out.

“Well, I am sure he likes me more than you now so that means that I can see him and not you, to hell with you!” Betty said as Zach's father let out a groan and return the letter to Betty, shot Maisie a glare, and marched off with his family following his trail.

“I don't think that your future father-in-law will like you," Betty tells Maisie. As she released a sigh. “I know and he isn't...”

“Stop denying and accept the truth already.” Betty said as she enters the room and Maisie followed behind her.
