Maisie gave Zach some water to drink as she pondered about his statement. What did he mean by that? Did he mean their time together or something else? He seems restless to make her understand but she calmed him down just after she pressed the button to call for the doctor.
“Don't let my family near me.” Zach tells Maisie as soon as he had sipped enough water for his throat.
Maisie frowned at that. That was a strange request even when it is coming from Zach, she knew that Zach felt out of tune with his family she had been hoping that he would not be too angry with her for not letting his family visit him, but the request threw her. It was like he was scared that they would try to hurt him. She knew that she couldn't push for answers now, but she could keep to his requests.
“Promise me.” Zach added as the door open and the doctor came in.
“I promise.” Maisie said as the doctor injected something into Zach's drip.
“I feel so sleepy.” Zach said with droopy eyes.
“What did you do?” Maisie asks the doctor in a sharp tone.
“I injected morphine into him to make him relax. He woke up in an agitated state which is not good for his present condition.” The doctor replied. “We will conduct the necessary physical examination when he wakes to know if we will keep him for more observation or allow him to go home.”
“Okay. Thank you, doctor.” Maisie said with a smile.
“Please do inform us when he wakes " the doctor added.
“I will," Maisie said as she nodded at the doctor who left the room shutting the door behind him.
Maisie sat down in her chair where she has been sitting down for the past thirteen hours with an occasional visit from Betty who would check on her every three hours. She opened her purse and collected her phone from it and dialed Betty's number.
“Talk to me," Betty said as she answered the call.
“Betty.” Maisie said crying “he woke up.”
“That is great news. I am so relieved, at least you will stop torturing yourself why you didn't exchange glasses with him,” Betty said.
“I was not torturing myself.” Maisie said with a laugh then a sniffle.
“Yes, you were but I am glad he is okay. Even if it is just for your peace of mind. I will visit you soon.” Betty said.
“Okay, and I would like you to please hurry. I am sure that someone in the hospital already told his parents that he was awake briefly. I am going to need back up to prevent them from entering his room.” Maisie said “You can't keep the guy's family away because you don't want them to see him, girl.” Betty tells her friend.
“I know but Zach was very out of sorts when he woke up and he made me promise him that I will keep his family away from him.”
“That is weird.” Betty said finally after a while of quietness.
“Tell me about it. Anyway, I will keep my promise to him. They will not near him while he is sleeping.” Maisie said as Betty sighed.
“Give me the name of Zach's lawyer I will pick a copy of the signed document where he made you his decision-maker if he is unable to make his decisions. I have a feeling that we are going to need it.” Betty said with a sigh.
“Thank you. I will send his details to you, and don't worry, I will be by your side when you fall in love and need somebody to be by your side.” Maisie said.
“Hell no. I will never fall in love. I have seen you in love and that is the closest I want to get to that emotion in my life.” Betty shudders.
“Funny but when you fall in love. You would wish that it had happened to you sooner.”
“I am hanging up now,” Betty warns.
“Fine, run away from the topic. Like it or not, it will happen to you.” Maisie said as Betty growls. “Goodbye.” then hung up.
