Chapter 60
Claire’s POV
“Don’t tell me you are thinking about forgetting about the revenge plan,” Aunt Lora began, sounding a little alarmed. “You owe it to your parents, especially your mother who died so you could live.”
I heaved a deep sigh. “I'm not going to lead a happy life until I am certain that bastard is dead, so please, you can relax.”
She gave a sigh of relief and smiled.
Suddenly, I remembered the picture I had seen of her and Kelvin’s father.
I crossed my arms over my chest and narrowed my eyes at her.
Her brows furrowed in puzzlement. “What now?”
“Isn’t there something you would like to tell me?” I queried. “Why do I feel like you are not being completely honest with me?”
She tucked a strand of her hair that had escaped from her rather tight ponytail, behind her ear.
“I'm not sure I understand what you mean.”
I arched an eyebrow but her expression remained innocent.
“Okay then, I’ll spell it out for you. What kind of relationship existed between you and the Alpha’s father? And please, do not bother lying. I saw the picture.”
Her eyes widened in shock before they filled with guilt. “I was so young and stupid then. How could I have believed that he really loved me?”
“Please tell me you didn't have an affair with a married man because, from my calculations, the Alpha was already born to his father during that period. Or was he born out of wedlock?”
“Of course not,” she replied, her eyes burning with righteous indignation. “I wouldn't date a married man. Unfortunately, his wife passed away just a year after the birth of his son.”
“I see,” I murmured. “You must hate him so much.”
“If there was another word stronger than hatred, I would use it to describe how I feel about him. I'm sure he had a great laugh after I so easily fell in love with him, ignorant about what he was planning to do to my family. How could I have been so foolish.”
I placed a hand on her arm and gave her a gentle squeeze.
“You weren't foolish for falling in love with him. He is the bad person for taking advantage of you.”
“Thank you for not judging me,” she replied with a sad smile.
“You did nothing wrong,” I murmured and wrapped my arms around her briefly.
“Are you sure you are going to be okay with all of this?” she asked, gently caressing my cheek. “I know you think I desperately want you to lead this revenge but you do not have to do anything if it's going to be too much for you.”
“Do not worry about me,” I replied. “I am emotionally stronger than you think. Like you said, I owe it to my parents. I need to be at the forefront of this plan.”
“Just let me know whenever it gets too hard,” she said, getting to her feet.
“Unlike you who are now the Personal Assistant of the Alpha and thus have no business with the basic chores, I have to be in the kitchen.”
I grinned. “You do not have to be in that damn kitchen. You are only choosing to slave away for hours because of your desire for revenge.”
“Trust me, it's worth it,” she replied and then blew me a kiss before leaving the room.
With a sigh, I lay down on the bed, feeling rather mentally exhausted.
I must have fallen asleep because the next time I opened my eyes, there was a figure standing right beside my bed.
A shriek of alarm fell from my lips as I sat bolt-upright on my bed.
“I am aware I haven't given you your job description so I am going to pardon your slacking off. But just for today,” Alpha Kelvin said.
He had changed into a T-shirt and a pair of black pants. His hair was also a little wet which told me that he had just gotten off the shower.
More noticeable and overwhelmingly so was his devastating scent that never failed to make my insides twist into a knot.
“For how long have you been standing here?” I queried.
“A couple of minutes,” he replied. “Do you have any idea how badly you snore? I nearly thought a pig had somehow found its way into your room when I first heard the sound.”
“That's absolutely false,” I said, getting to my feet. “I do not snore. Ms.Lora would certainly have said something about it.”
He grinned. “Perhaps, she doesn't want to hurt your feelings.”
I resisted the urge to ask him to shut up and instead said, “Why are you even here? You could have easily asked a guard to send for me.”
“Why did you run away earlier?” he queried. “If you do that one more time, I am going to have to deduct from your pay.”
My eyes widened. “I'm going to get paid?”
He looked offended. “Do you really think that less of me? It would be cruel to ask you to work for me for free.”
A scoff slipped from my lips. “You seem to be forgetting that for the past few months, I have been working without getting paid.”
He scratched the back of his neck. “That's a totally different situation.”
“If that's what you choose to call it,” I replied.
“You can come in, Ava,” he suddenly called out and the young maiden quickly appeared by his side.
“She is going to show you to your new room. You are to resume your duties tomorrow. Remember, I do not tolerate tardiness.”
I wanted to ask what exactly my duties were but he was already strolling out of the room.
Immediately he shut the door behind him, Ava pinned me with a gaze filled with curiosity.
“How did you manage to get promoted? You must teach me your skills so that I can achieve the same feat.”
Nervously, I tucked a strand of my hair behind one ear. “Believe me, I did nothing special.”
“Now, why don't I believe that?” she queried. “Anyway, let’s get you settled in your new room.”
With that, she turned and started to walk out of the room without bothering to see if I was following.
My brows furrowed in puzzlement when we reached the hallway where the Alpha’s room was located.
“Are you sure we are going in the right direction?” I queried.
She stopped in front of the double doors directly opposite the Alpha’s room and pushed them open.
“You can imagine how dumbfounded I was when he ordered me to get you settled in here,” Ava said, turning her head to the side to look at me.
“Is this my room?” I queried, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Didn't I mention that earlier?” she replied, rolling her eyes before she stepped into the room.
In a daze, I followed her in and couldn't help the gasp that fell from my lips.
In my eighteen years of existence, I had never dreamt of sleeping in a room as grand as the one I was standing in.
Sophie was really going to go nuts when she found out. It also didn't help that the room was directly opposite her husband’s.
Even her chambers weren't that close to his. Her room was not on the same floor as the Alpha’s.
