Fifty nine

ERICA'S POV

The rain poured down harder, drenching us both as we stood there, locked in a silent battle. My chest felt like it was being ripped apart, the weight of my decision pressing down on me. I loved him. God, how I loved him, but this life… his life… was one I couldn't live.

"I have to go," I whispered, barely able to get the words out.

Kyle's eyes widened, the weight of my decision sinking in. I could see it in his face-the disbelief, the pain. He didn't say anything at first, just stood there staring at me as if he couldn't quite believe what was happening.

"Erica…" he started, his voice cracking. "Don't do this. Don't walk away from us."

My heart clenched, but I forced myself to take a step back. I had to leave. If I stayed, I'd lose myself in his world, in the darkness that surrounded him. I couldn't do it. No matter how much I loved him, I had to choose my own path.

"I'm sorry, Kyle," I whispered, stepping further away, my hand reaching for the door. "I can't."

As I turned to leave, something snapped in him.

"Erica, wait!" His voice was desperate, and before I could take another step, I felt his hand around my wrist, pulling me back. I turned to face him, surprised by the raw emotion in his eyes. He looked... broken.

"I can't lose you," he whispered, his grip tightening, but not painfully. He was holding on, trying to keep me from slipping away, but there was something more-something deeper. "Please… don't go."

His voice shook, and that's when I saw it, the tears. Real, uncontrollable tears sliding down his face. Kyle, the man who had always been in control, always strong, always unbreakable was crying.

For me.

He let go of my wrist and stumbled back, wiping his face as if trying to stop the tears, but they kept coming. "I can't do this without you, Erica. I can't… I need you."

I stood frozen, shocked at the sight of him. This wasn't the Kyle I knew-the cold, untouchable Mafia don. This was someone else. Someone vulnerable, someone who was truly terrified of losing the person he loved.

"Kyle…" I whispered, but he cut me off.

"No, let me finish," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I've never said this to anyone. I've never felt like this about anyone." He took a shaky breath, his eyes locking onto mine, pleading. "I love you, Erica. I love you more than anything in this world. And I know I've hurt you. I know I haven't been the man you deserve, but I swear, I'll do anything. Just… please… don't leave me."

The tears kept falling, and before I knew it, he was on his knees in front of me, his hands gripping the fabric of my dress as if I was his lifeline. He was sobbing now, the kind of sobs that come from deep inside, the kind that can't be controlled.

"I'm begging you," he choked out, his voice barely audible. "Please, don't leave me."

I stared down at him, my heart shattering into a million pieces. I had never seen him like this-so open, so vulnerable. The man I thought was incapable of emotion, incapable of love, was on his knees, crying like a child, begging me to stay.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe. The rain mixed with his tears, and I felt my own tears slipping down my cheeks. My resolve was crumbling, but I couldn't ignore the voice in my head telling me to go. To leave. To protect myself.

But how could I walk away from this? How could I leave him like this, knowing he was in love with me, truly in love with me?

I knelt down in front of him, my hands trembling as I placed them on his shoulders. "Kyle…" I whispered, but he wouldn't look at me. His head was bowed, his shoulders shaking with every sob.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice broken. "I'm so sorry for everything I've done to you. I never wanted this. I never wanted to hurt you. I love you, Erica. Please… please don't go."

My heart was breaking. I had come here this morning knowing what I had to do-knowing I needed to leave-but now I was lost. Seeing him like this, hearing him say those words, made everything so much harder.

"I don't want to lose you," he said again, his voice trembling. "I'll change, Erica. I'll leave the life behind. I'll do whatever it takes, I swear."

I shook my head, my throat tightening with emotion. "Kyle, it's not just about you. It's about me. I'm scared. I'm scared of what this life will do to me."

He finally looked up at me, his eyes red and swollen from crying. "I'll protect you," he whispered. "I'll protect you from everything. Just… stay with me. Please."

For the first time in a long time, I didn't know what to do. I was torn between the life I thought I wanted and the man I knew I loved. The man who had broken through every wall I'd built around myself, the man who was now on his knees in front of me, begging me to stay.

Could I walk away from him? Could I live with myself if I did?

"I love you too," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "But I'm scared, Kyle. I'm scared that love won't be enough."

"It will be," he said, his voice raw with emotion. "It has to be. We'll make it enough."

I closed my eyes, the weight of his words settling over me like a blanket. My heart was screaming at me to stay, but my mind was still terrified of the life I'd be signing up for.

But looking at him, seeing him like this, I realized something. This man-this broken, vulnerable man-loved me. Truly loved me. And maybe that was enough. Maybe we could figure out the rest together.

Maybe… just maybe… love was enough.

His words hung in the air between us, thick with raw emotion.

"We'll make it enough."*

I looked into his tear-streaked face, his eyes filled with desperation, love, and a vulnerability I had never seen before. He was on his knees, broken down completely, and for the first time, I saw the man behind the Mafia don. Not the cold, ruthless Kyle I had come to fear, but the real Kyle. The one who was willing to throw everything away-for me.

"I love you, Erica. We'll figure it out together," he whispered, his voice hoarse from crying. "I don't care about the life I had before. None of that matters if I don't have you."

I bit my lip, the flood of emotions threatening to drown me. He was offering me everything-his world, his heart. And I knew he meant every word. He would walk away from it all if I asked. He would protect me, love me, and do whatever it took to make our love enough.

Could I do it? Could I give in and trust him with my heart? Could I let go of the fear that had gripped me for so long?

I didn't know how long I stood there, staring at him, my heart warring with my mind. But as the rain poured down around us, as his sobs slowly quieted into soft, ragged breaths, something shifted inside me. I realized that I couldn't walk away from him-not now. Not after everything we had been through.

I knelt beside him, my hands trembling as I reached out and cupped his face, tilting his chin up so he was looking at me. His eyes, red and swollen, searched mine, as if he was afraid to hope, afraid to believe that I might stay.

"I'm scared, Kyle," I whispered, my voice shaking. "I'm scared of what this life will do to me. I'm scared of losing myself in all of this."

He nodded, his expression filled with understanding. "I know. But I swear to you, I'll be by your side through everything. I won't let you face this alone."

I searched his eyes, looking for any hint of doubt, any flicker of hesitation, but there was none. He meant every word. He wasn't offering me an easy life, but he was offering me his heart-and that was something I had never thought I would have.

"I love you," he said again, his voice breaking. "I've never loved anyone the way I love you, Erica. You're everything to me."

The rain continued to fall, cold and relentless, but I didn't care. My heart was pounding in my chest, my mind screaming at me to be careful. But in that moment, I knew I couldn't leave him. I couldn't walk away from the man who had risked everything for me. The man who had opened his heart in a way no one else ever had.

"I love you too, Kyle," I whispered, tears blurring my vision. "I love you so much."

The relief in his eyes was instant, and before I knew it, he was pulling me into his arms, crushing me against his chest as if he couldn't bear to let me go. His hands trembled as they held me, and I could feel the rapid beat of his heart against mine.

"I won't let you regret this," he whispered into my ear, his voice thick with emotion. "I promise you, Erica. I'll do whatever it takes to make you happy."

I clung to him, the tears finally spilling over as I buried my face in his shoulder. "I believe you," I whispered, and for the first time in a long time, I meant it.

Maybe I was still scared. Maybe the thought of staying with him, of being part of his world, still terrified me. But I loved him. And maybe that love could be enough.

"I'll stay," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sound of the rain. "I'll stay with you."

His arms tightened around me, and I felt him shudder with relief. He pulled back just enough to look into my eyes, his face still wet with tears, but a smile breaking through the sadness.

"You won't regret this," he said, his voice filled with a new determination. "We'll make it work. I'll keep you safe, Erica. I swear it."

I nodded, unable to speak past the lump in my throat. In that moment, with the rain pouring down around us and the weight of our decision hanging in the air, I knew there was no turning back. I had made my choice. I had chosen him.

Kyle leaned in, his lips brushing softly against mine, and for a moment, the world disappeared. There was no Mafia, no danger, no fear. Just him and me, wrapped in the warmth of our love, a love that had grown from the most unlikely of places.

When he pulled back, he rested his forehead against mine, his breath ragged. "I love you," he whispered again, as if he couldn't say it enough.

"I love you too," I replied, my heart swelling with emotion.

We stayed like that for what felt like forever, holding each other, the rain soaking through our clothes, but neither of us caring. In that moment, nothing else mattered. Not the past, not the future. Just us.

I knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy. I knew there would be challenges, danger, and moments where I would doubt my decision. But as long as Kyle was by my side, I felt like I could face anything.

And in the end, that was all that mattered.

The storm around us began to fade, but the storm inside me had settled. I had made my choice, and as I stood there in Kyle's arms, I knew that, somehow, we would make it work. No matter what came our way, we would face it together.

For the first time in a long time, I wasn't afraid. I was in love. And that was enough.
