Chapter 58: Fifty eight
Erica's POV:
I stood by the window, watching the sunrise slowly chase away the darkness. The irony wasn't lost on me-such a beautiful morning on what felt like the hardest day of my life. Thirty days. I had been counting them down from the moment this twisted arrangement started, but now that the final day was here, I didn't know what to do.
I glanced back at the bed where Kyle would always lay with me. For weeks, I had told myself that this was temporary. He was temporary. I was supposed to hate him. He had taken everything from me-my freedom, my choices, my dignity. But somehow, along the way, hate had turned into something I didn't recognize, something I wasn't ready for.
Love.
The thought of it felt wrong. Loving him felt wrong. Kyle was everything I should despise: cold, ruthless, and a Mafia don. Yet, when he wasn't those things, he was kind, protective, even tender. I couldn't deny the connection we'd built, no matter how hard I tried.
But love wasn't enough, was it?
A pit formed in my stomach as I thought about the world he lived in-the deals, the danger, the constant threats. It wasn't just his life; it would become mine, too. How could I survive that? How could I wake up every day, looking over my shoulder, wondering if today was the day I'd lose him or myself? I'd seen enough already to know I didn't want this for my future.
The door creaked open, and I tensed as Kyle stepped into the room. I could feel his eyes on me, searching for something-maybe an answer, maybe a sign that I'd already made up my mind. But I hadn't. I was stuck between the part of me that wanted to run far away and the part of me that couldn't imagine a life without him.
"I've been thinking," I started, my voice shaky. "About us."
Kyle moved toward me, his presence filling the room in that way that always made it hard to breathe. His fingers brushed against my arm, and I pulled away instinctively. That touch-God, it used to feel like a prison, but now? Now it made me want to cry because I knew what it meant, what I was about to walk away from.
"I don't want you to go," he said, his voice thick with emotion.
That was new-him showing how much this hurt him. Kyle wasn't the type to let people in, but somehow, he'd let me in, and now he was trying to hold on. I turned to face him, feeling the weight of everything I wanted to say and couldn't.
"I love you, Kyle. But I can't do this."
He flinched like my words were a knife to his chest.
"You can't do what?" His voice was steady, but I could see the cracks.
"I can protect you, Erica. You don't have to worry about any of that."
"That's the problem." I shook my head, fighting back tears.
"I don't want to live a life where I need to be protected. I want to wake up every morning and feel... free. And with you-this life-it's anything but free."
His jaw tightened, and I could see him struggling to hold on to something, anything that might make me stay.
"I'll leave it all behind," he said suddenly, his voice so soft I almost didn't hear it.
"The family, the business... all of it. I'll walk away, Erica. For you."
My heart slammed against my chest. Was he serious? I looked into his eyes, searching for any hint of doubt, but all I saw was truth. He meant it.
"You'd give up everything for me?" My voice was barely a whisper now.
Kyle nodded, stepping closer, his hands cupping my face gently, like I was something precious, something he was terrified of losing.
"I would. But only if you're sure. Don't stay because you feel like you owe me anything. Stay because you want to. Stay because you love me."
I closed my eyes, feeling the tears finally spill over. God, how I wanted to stay. How I wanted to believe that love could be enough. But there was a voice in my head, reminding me of all the things I'd have to sacrifice to be with him. Could I live with those sacrifices? Could I live without him?
"I need time," I managed to say, my voice trembling.
"We don't have time," he whispered, his breath warm against my skin.
"It's today or never."
I opened my eyes and looked at him, my heart breaking in ways I never thought possible. Today or never. This was the moment. The moment I had to decide if I was strong enough to walk away from the man I loved or brave enough to stay and live in his world.
I stood there, staring into his eyes, torn between the life I wanted and the man I couldn't bear to lose.
The 30th day was here, and no matter what I chose, nothing would ever be the same again.
Kyle's words echoed in my mind, drowning out everything else.
*It's today or never.*
I wanted to scream. How could he ask me to make such a final choice? How could he expect me to walk away from the only life I'd ever known or dive headfirst into one I feared more than anything? But as I looked into his eyes, I knew he wasn't trying to manipulate me. He was just as lost as I was, trapped between the life he had built and the life he wanted with me.
His hands slipped from my face, falling to his sides as if he could feel me slipping away. He didn't say anything more. It was like he knew no amount of pleading would change the outcome. He was giving me space, giving me the chance to decide for myself.
But that only made it worse.
The silence stretched between us, thick with unspoken words, and I felt like I was suffocating. I needed air. I needed space. I turned on my feet and walked out of the room, my heart pounding in my chest as I went.
I didn't know where I was going, only that I needed to escape the pressure of his presence. Every step felt heavier than the last as I made my way down the long hallway, the cold marble floors sending a chill through my bare feet. This place, this mansion, had once felt like a prison. Now, it felt like a crossroads. A place where I had to choose-freedom or love.
But was it really freedom if it meant leaving him behind?
I found myself outside, standing on the balcony overlooking the sprawling grounds of the estate. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of rain. I leaned against the railing, staring out at the horizon, searching for answers that weren't there.
Why did it have to be so hard?
My mind raced with memories-our first meeting, the tension, the fear. Then, later, the stolen glances, the soft touches, the way he'd held me in his arms as if I was the only thing that mattered. The way he whispered my name when he thought I was asleep, like I was the only person who could make him feel human again.
I pressed my palms to my eyes, trying to stop the tears from falling. *Why can't love be enough?* I thought bitterly.
But deep down, I knew the truth. It wasn't just about love. It was about survival. Could I survive this life with him? Could I survive the Mafia world that surrounded him? I wasn't sure I could.
Footsteps behind me broke the silence. I didn't have to turn around to know it was Kyle. I could feel him. That pull, that connection, it was always there, drawing me to him no matter how much I tried to resist.
"I didn't mean to push you," he said, his voice softer now. "I just... I don't know what to do, Erica. I've never felt like this before. Not for anyone."
I turned to face him, my heart aching at the sight of him standing there, looking more vulnerable than I'd ever seen him. The cold, controlled Mafia don was gone. In his place stood a man who was terrified of losing the woman he loved.
"I know," I whispered. "But this isn't just about us. It's about the life we'd have. The dangers. The risks."
Kyle stepped closer, closing the distance between us until he was standing just inches away. He reached out, gently brushing a tear from my cheek with his thumb.
"I can handle the risks. I can protect you."
"But I don't want to live my life waiting for the other shoe to drop," I said, my voice cracking.
"I don't want to spend every day wondering if today's the day someone comes for us. I don't want to lose myself, Kyle."
He let out a slow breath, his hand falling back to his side.
"I understand," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"I get it. But if you walk away now, we'll never know what we could have had. Maybe it wouldn't be perfect. Maybe it'd be messy and dangerous. But it'd be ours."
His words hit me like a punch to the gut. He was right. If I left now, I'd never know. I'd never know if we could have built something real, something lasting. But if I stayed, I'd be choosing a life of uncertainty. A life where love might not be enough.
I looked up at him, my chest tight with the weight of the decision.
"I love you," I said, my voice trembling. "I love you so much. But I don't know if I'm strong enough for this."
Kyle's expression softened, and for a moment, I saw the man underneath the Mafia don. The man who had let his guard down for me, who had risked everything to be with me.
"You are strong enough," he said, his voice steady. "Stronger than you think."
I swallowed hard, my mind racing. Could I do this? Could I really leave him? Or would I always wonder what could have been?
Before I could answer, the sky above us rumbled with thunder, the first drops of rain beginning to fall. It felt like the world itself was holding its breath, waiting for my decision. The rain fell harder now, but we both stood there, staring at each other, waiting for the moment to end. The decision was mine to make, and with every beat of my heart, I felt the clock ticking down.
I had to choose-freedom or love. And no matter what I decided, I knew nothing would ever be the same again.
